Great Basin National Park -- Adventure on America's Loneliest Road in Nevada
Great Basin National Park is a real stunner located on I50 -- America's Loneliest Road -- in Nevada's Basin and Range. The scenery ranges from the desert floor, to centuries old bristlecone pines, to pristine glacial lakes, to wonderful waterfalls, to a palatial glacial cirque, to towering mountaintops. The hikes vary from easy to strenuous. In fact, the Wheeler Peak hike looks easy until you're actually on the trail. After a mile, the surface becomes broken rock, then (at least when we were there in July) a little snow. The last mile of very sharp switchbacks take you straight up to the peak. The reward, as you'll see in this video, is enormously worth it, but it's best for people who are fit and can cope with the reduced oxygen at 13,159 feet. When you visit, absolutely set aside time for the Lehman Cave tour, too. The stalactites, stalagmites and shield formations rival the finest sculpture and the park service tour guides are cheery and knowledgable. Camping in Great Basin National Park was a thrill that we plan to repeat next summer and every time we find ourselves on America's Loneliest Road. Larry Richardson created this video for RichardsonArtPhotographyStore.com using an iPhone 7 and iMovie.

Day 3 Nevada: Great Basin National Park to Ely
Read more:
On Day 3, we head up towards Great Basin National Park, the only national park in Nevada, which has a reputation for its intricate caves and delightfully uncrowded hikes. Further along the journey, we discover a time machine to the past at McGill Drugstore Museum. With vintage products and nostalgic brands that haven't left the shelves since the 1960's, this isn't your average Walgreen's. Walking down the aisles is a trip down Memory Lane and one more reminder that Nevada is utterly unique. A few more miles and a couple more stamps in my Official HWY 50 passport, and we are on our way. Hitch a ride with us on Day 4...you won't want to miss it.

Great Basin National Park
After having spent the weekend in Vegas, we set off on October 2nd towards Utah. We stopped in the small town of Caliante NV, and found an RV park with petrol, shop and restaurant on the Nevada / Utah border on the highway 50 near the town of Baker for the night. Spent most of October 3rd 2017 in the mountains of Great Basin National Park, with amazing views of the valley and Pyramid Peak before continuing east towards Capitol Reef.

Great Basin National Park Trip 2010 and 2012
A pretty much unknown national park. It contains Lehman Caves which are some of the best formations I have seen. The great thing is most of the formations are within touching distance. It has great hiking up to two lakes (Stella and Teresa). The hike begins at over 10,000 feet. So very thin air, but great scenery. The town of Ely, Nevada has a cute casino/steakhouse...the jailhouse. A lot of fun! Also near Ely are the Ward Charcoal Ovens, which is where they used to make charcoal in the late 1800s (the ovens are ALL still in perfect condition)

Lehman Caves - Great Basin National Park
Lehman Caves is an incredible cave that is located within Great Basin National Park. Lehman Caves has history that dates back to late 1800's and early 1900's when it was first being explored after being discovered. Although Great Basin National Park is one of the lowest visited parks in the National park Service, it holds some of the greatest gems of all the parks. If it weren't so remote, visitation would probably be much higher.
If you haven't been able to see Lehman Caves, make the effort to plan a trip to go out an visit Great Basin. It's an incredibly beautiful park that has great hiking, and offers the chance to see an amazing cave that features formations not seen in many other caves.
Fishing in Great Basin National Park
We did some fishing over two days of camping at Lower Lehman CG. We did the best in small pools just along the camp ground. A stealthy approach is needed. I used #10 barbless hooks with big red worms threaded on it. Nothing on the line except hook & worm. Drop into hole or let drift downstream with the flow a little. This works well when you can get the bait to flow into a good spot. Shot Aug. 11th 2016.
Nevada Adventure Road Trip: Vegas to Great Basin National Park
Take the ultimate adventure road trip in Nevada. Just outside of Vegas you can canoe down Black Canyon starting from Hoover Dam. Next drive Great Basin Highway (aka Highway 93) to Cathedral Gorge State Park and check out the slot canyons. Finally end up in Great Basin National Park. Hike up to Wheeler Peak and explore the ancient Bristlecone Pine and Lehman Caves.
Ezra Camps at Great Basin National Park and Hikes Glacier Trail Aug 18-21, 2012
Driving to Great Basin National Park this summer for a couple of nights camping, and hiking the Glacier Trail and Alpine Lakes trail. While hiking we experienced thunderstorms and even a little bit of hail/sleet! This is a special place, with the 3000 year old Bristlecone Pines, you start to commune with the earth and realize that the empty expanses, the open road, the mystery of the distant, the silence of the in-between, all stand witness to the slowness of time.
