Things to do in Stellenbosch, South Africa Travel Guide Video Transcript:
On our very first trip to South Africa we spent one day in Stellenbosch where we did a wine tour and hit up a total of 5 wineries. It was an action packed day but we knew we had only seen a fraction of what this place has to offer and we were itching to return! Fast forward two years, and we found ourselves with an invitation to come and experience Stellenbosch, this time with a week to spare. Naturally we said yes! This being the winelands meant that our itinerary was wine heavy, but we also got to see sample the food, visit the markets, check out the nightlife and get close to nature. The following is our travel guide to Stellenbosch, pour yourself a glass of wine, sit back, and join us on this ride!
In between all the feasting and vineyard hopping, we also found a bit of time to explore Stellenbosch itself. Stellenbosch is a charming town located in the Western Cape, and it’s the second oldest European settlement in the province after Cape Town. The streets are lined with oak trees, the buildings are all painted white, and you have a cool mix of Early Cape, Cape Dutch, and Victorian architecture.
And while Sam was off hiking, I did a biking tour of Stellenbosch with the Adventure Shop, where I learned a bit more about the town’s history, and got out in nature, before biking over to the Lanzerac Wine Estate where we met up with the group again. Here we had a light lunch featuring a spread of cheese, deli meats, fresh fruits, and of course, wine!
And just like that our week in Stellenbosch was over! I think it’s fair to say that we left a few pounds heavier, but with a newfound appreciation for South African wine and a taste of what the winelands have to offer. As always, we hope you enjoyed this travel guide and that it gave you a few ideas of things to do in Stellenbosch. If you have any other suggestions of cool things to see, eat, or experience, feel free to share those with travellers in the comments below. In the meantime we wish you happy travels and we’ll see you in Cape Town on our next video!
This is part of our Travel in South Africa video series showcasing South African food, South African culture, South African wine and South African cuisine.

Layla & Cheslin Kolbe Wedding - Stellenbosch - South Africa
Toulouse Fullback Cheslin Kolbe married the beautiful Layla at the beautiful Webersburg Estate at the foot of the Stellenbosch mountains.
With a star studded guest list and the beautiful Stellenbosch mountain range as the backdrop, Layla & Cheslin started the day with great excitement and a slight hint of nervousness.
With both parties getting dressed at Webersburg it was a mini battle between bride and groom to not sneak a peek throughout the morning.
Shooting both Layla & Cheslin was so easy as this couple needed no help being intimate and full of love during the couple shoot. Cheslin could not get enough of his wife and all we needed to do was point our cameras in their direction.
Thank you Cheslin & Layla for sharing your big day with us. We hope you enjoy this Highlights Video from your wedding day.

Stellenbosch Travel Guide - An South African Adventure
Stellenbosch Travel Guide - An South African Adventure
Stellenbosch is a city in the Western Cape of South Africa and is the heart of the Cape Winelands, South Africa's prime wine region. Stellenbosch (founded in 1679) is about 50 km east of Cape Town and is the second oldest town in South Africa. It was named (like Simon's Town) after the former Governor Simon van der Stel. The town is situated on the banks of the Eerste River ('First River') and has some fine examples of Cape Dutch architecture. It is also known as 'Eikestad' ('Oak City') because of its oak tree lined streets. Wines from the Stellenbosch region are known internationally and rank among the best in the world.
Stellenbosch is also home to one of the country's oldest established universities with over 25000 students. There is a bustling night life during the university term-time, with many night clubs catering for young people. Stellenbosch is a diverse city, although many Afrikaans speaking people still reside in the area and Afrikaans as a language is still often used in day to day life. Due to the University, many Euopean and American exchange students roam the streets.
Stellenbosch is small enough that the entire city centre can easily be covered on foot. The Tourism Bureau also has a few cycles to rent. A curiosity is that there are no street signs. If you look closely you will see that the street names are indicated in yellow (in Afrikaans) on the edge of the sidewalks.
A walking tour of Stellenbosch provides fascinating glimpses of colonial Dutch architecture. The Stellenbosch Tourism and Information Bureau, 36 Market St., organizes one and a half hour guided tours at 11.00 and 15.00 Monday to Friday (R80pp) and special groups can also be arranged for on request. Alternatively, buy the brochure Historical Stellenbosch on Foot from the Bureau for R5 and guide yourselves. There are many good restaurants in the town. The area around Church Street is informally known as the local restaurant district, with approximately 19 venues within a four block radius.
Stellenbosch is 53 km (33 mi) east of Cape Town via National Route N1. Stellenbosch is in a hilly region of the Cape Winelands, and is sheltered in a valley at an average elevation of 136 m (446 ft), flanked on the west by Papegaaiberg (Afrikaans: Parrot Mountain), which is actually a hill. To the south is Stellenbosch Mountain; to the east and southeast are the Jonkershoek, Drakenstein, and Simonsberg mountains.

The magnificent great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias L.) is one of the oldest shark lineages with an evolutionary origin dating back to about 14 million years. The Cape Winelands
The Cape Winelands - north-east of Cape Town - are framed by the mountain ranges of the Great Escarpment. Wines which range among the best in the world are grown in the sunny valleys around Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek. This area has fertile soils, a sunny and mild climate and little wind: ideal conditions for cultivating wine. As early as end of the 17th century, Dutch, French and German vintners settled here and planted their European vines, thus eventually bringing prosperity about for the entire region.
The oldest town in the Winelands is Stellenbosch - with many stunning historic buildings from the times of the Cape Colony. Stellenbosch has one of the most reputable universities in the country.
At the foot of prominent granite boulders lies Paarl - the Pearl - biggest town of the Winelands, surrounded by world famous wine estates. One of the attractions of Paarl is the impressive Afrikaanse Taalmonument. It is, like the Taal Museum in town, dedicated to the development of Afrikaans as a language of its own.
The Huguenot monument in Franschhoek honours the French immigrants, who founded the village in 1688. They were excellent wine farmers and today Franschhoek is proud of the numerous renowned wine estates. And of its French flair. The Main Road is seamed with boutiques, art galleries, fine restaurants with French cuisine and cafés.
Everywhere in the Winelands one finds the pretty white Cape Dutch buildings with their characteristic gables. In the beginnings they used to be quite plaine, but with growing prosperity their shapes became more ornate. The pointed gables gave way to curved shapes.
Many famous Wine estates are open for wine tastings.
