Steller sea lions in Nevelsk, Sakhalin, Russia
On April 23, 2017 almost 700 Steller sea lions were present at the Nevelsk breakwater. The nice and sunny weather had attracted many people to come and look at their sea lions. I joined an excursion from Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk based NGO Klub Bumerang, which has been organising educational tours to the rookery since 2004 and showing people many interesting things about the sea lions and their marine environment. As in years before, many sea lions were seen with marine debris strapped around their necks. Let's put waste were it belongs, keep the Sea and Nature clean!

Endangered sea lions winter at Russian far eastern port city The sea lions often spend the summer
Steller sea lions settled on the blocky seaside piers Russian far eastern port city of Petropavlosk-Kamchatsky to spend a winter .
Local biologists say that the city's piers became the sea lions' favorite wintering spot because a Soviet fish-processing plant once provided a food source for the mammals, and they continue to follow the old habit till today.
A new pier has been built in recent years to make their stay safer. Their cumbersome stretched-out bodies have become attractions for locals and tourists alike, making the city one of only a handful to host the seasonal creatures.
The Steller sea lion, also known as the Northern sea lion, measures up to 3.3 metres in length. Males weigh up to 1,100 kilograms while females weigh around 350 kg. Mature male sea lions usually gather in May in Russia's Commander Islands in the Pacific, east of Kamchatka. A week or so later, adult females arrive to mate.
The sea lions often spend the summer in the Commander Islands, but as winter sets in they head south to places like Kamchatka where the temperature is on average only minus 7 Celsius in January.

When sea lions chose to move into the port at Kamchatka, they came for the easy fish. Now, their numbers are in danger and the locals are trying to find a way to stop the population dwindling more. #LocalHeroes

Earthquakes, Blizzards, Volcanic Activity All Hit Russia's Far East on One Day
Earthquakes, Blizzards, Volcanic Activity All Hit Russia's Far East on One Day.Severe natural upheavals raged across Russia's Far East on Thursday, as the region experienced increased volcanic activity, at least five earthquakes, avalanches and a month's worth of snow within a day, media reports said.
An airport on Sakhalin Island was forced to shut down while regional officials closed off roads and struggled to restore power to 12 villages on the south of the island that were still without electricity Thursday morning, Interfax reported.
The Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk Airport was closed for the second day in a row on Thursday, with 60 flights grounded or rerouted because of the severe snow storm, Interfax reported. More than 1,000 people were stranded in the terminal, the airport said in a statement Wednesday.
The authorities have also issued an avalanche alert for Sakhalin Island and the Kamchatka Peninsula after three snow slides were recorded in one day, according to Interfax.
Nobody was injured in the relatively small snow slides, which were less than 60 cubic meters in volume, a spokesperson for the local road authority was quoted as saying.
The cyclone that brought these severe snowstorms to the region is expected to continue for the rest of the week, a spokesperson for the local weather service told Interfax.
Four earthquakes rattled the Sakhalin region in just one day, with the strongest one on Thursday morning reaching a magnitude of 5.2 at its epicenter in the Pacific Ocean, Interfax reported, citing the local seismic station.
Another 5.4-magnitude earthquake was reported in Kamchatka, according to Interfax.
In a further demonstration of the force of nature, the Shiveluch volcano in Kamchatka emitted an immense plume of volcanic ash on Wednesday, which drifted northwest over unpopulated areas, the regional branch of the Emergency Situations Ministry said in a statement, Interfax reported.
The nearly 5,000-meter-high Klyuchevsky volcano, also located in Kamchatka, on Monday began spewing ash up to 6 kilometers in the air, the ministry said.
