How to Pick a Great Airline Seat
Watch more Flying Tips videos:
Don't get stuck in a middle seat near a bathroom on your next flight. With a little time and effort, you can be sitting pretty.
Step 1: Figure out your priorities
There is no single best seat on an airplane — all have their pros and cons — so decide what's important to you. Legroom? Peace and quiet? A quick exit? A smooth ride?
Step 2: Check out seats
Don't assume anything about a seat without checking it out. Some bulkhead seats don't offer extra legroom, some window seats are between windows and therefore offer little view, and many exit seats, while providing more legroom, are narrower than other seats.
Tip
Find out what kind of plane you'll be on and then visit seatexpert.com: or seatguru.com: Click on any seat to see its pros and cons.
Step 3: Buy a better seat
Pay a small fee to ensure you get a seat with the most legroom. Many airlines now identify their best seats on their websites and charge for them accordingly.
Step 4: Don't forget about reclining
Take reclining into account. If you like to sit back, avoid the last rows in any section. If you hate people leaning into your lap, try to snare an exit seat; the seats in front of those rows usually don't recline.
Tip
Exit row seats are often not assigned until check-in. To snag one, get to the airport early.
Step 5: Consider the pitch
Consider the pitch of the seat, which is the distance between your seat and the one in front of you. You'll find this information on airline seat websites.
Step 6: Take turbulence into account
Take turbulence into account. If you're a white-knuckle flyer, sit over the front of the wing; that's where you're least likely to feel turbulence. Avoid the back, where you'll feel every bump.
Step 7: Consider the noise
If you need peace and quiet, avoid sitting in the back, where the engines are the loudest. And steer clear of the bulkhead, where families with babies are usually seated.
Step 8: Book early
When you buy your ticket, be sure to book your specific seat, either online or by calling the airline directly.
Tip
Increase your odds of sitting beside an empty middle seat by requesting a back row where either the aisle or window seat is already booked. The middle seats in back rows fill up last.
Step 9: Check back the day before
Check back 24 hours before your flight; this is when prime seating often is released. Plus, airlines occasionally switch planes, possibly turning your chosen seat into an undesirable one!
Step 10: Join a good-seat program
If you're a frequent flyer, consider joining an airline program that guarantees a good seat for an annual fee.
Did You Know?
The average airline seat in coach is just 17.2 inches wide.

Family of 7 Living Completely Off-Grid in Northern Canada!
In this video, we meet Jeff, Rose, and their 5 girls who are living completely off grid on a 40-acre piece of land in Northern British Columbia, Canada. They built their own off-grid house for less than $25,000 with cedar posts sunk into the ground like a pole barn, log rafters, plywood, foam insulation, and a living roof. The house was so affordable to build because they didn't have to excavate or pour a concrete foundation, dig a well, or install a septic system.
They have 2 solar power systems to power everything they need. The first solar system is just one solar panel that generates 12-Volt power for their lights, cell phones, and music player. The larger system is a 2.5 Kilowatt solar power system installed on their shop roof with a lithium ion battery bank that powers their full-sized fridge, a chest freezer, washing machine, as well as a mixer, blender and a toaster. They have a backup generator but they only have to use it for about 40 hours per year during prolonged cloudy or snowy periods.
All of the water the family uses is rainwater collected from their shop roof and stored in a tank under the shop floor to keep it cool. They carry buckets of water into the house for cooking, dishes and showers. To produce clean drinking water, they filter their rainwater in a passive water filter called a Burkey (check them out here:
The grey water from their kitchen sink and shower drains into a shallow grey water field in the backyard.
They have 2 composting bucket toilets and they sprinkle sawdust into the buckets after each use to absorb moisture and prevent smells.
For heat, they cut their own firewood for their Blaze King catalytic wood stove, and for their antique cookstove in the kitchen that they use for cooking and baking.
Jeff and Rose homeschool their 5 girls for a few hours each day and also ensure that their kids are learning diverse life skills like growing their own food, caring for horses, raising bees, and more.
We're very impressed with the clever solutions this family has come up with to make off-grid living seem so easy.
If you want to learn more about this inspiring family and follow their journey, check out their Gridlessness project — they have a blog and a YouTube channel.

How the Zipper Truck Will Help Your Alex Fraser Bridge Commute
A first of its kind in Western Canada, the Alex Fraser Bridge’s counterflow system operates thanks to a distinctive piece of equipment – the zipper truck – which has arguably dethroned the bridge inspection truck as the ministry’s coolest of all tools.
Unless you’ve experienced a similar moveable barrier counterflow system south of the border – the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, for instance – it may take a bit getting used to. We produced an animated video so drivers know what to expect when crossing the bridge.
We’ve received many good questions about the moveable barrier counterflow system; not surprising, considering it’s so new to Western Canada. We’ve collected the most frequently asked questions (and answers) here.
Q. Why did you choose this system?
A. We considered other options, such as a signal-operated counterflow system like you see on the George Massey Tunnel and Lions Gate Bridge. Thing is, signal-operated systems do not provide the physical separation between oncoming traffic during counterflow operations. On the other hand, the moveable barrier system allows the median barrier to separate opposing directions of traffic at all times (score for safety!).
Q. What is the counterflow schedule?
A. The extra lane will be in place for northbound traffic every weekday from 4:30 am to 11:30 am in order to reduce congestion during the morning commute. Outside of these hours, and on weekends, the fourth lane will be in place for southbound traffic.
Q. Did you have to do anything to the bridge to accommodate the increased traffic?
A. We added a seventh lane to the bridge as part of these improvements by reconfiguring the six previous lanes and removing the shoulders. The lanes were reduced in width from 3.7 metres to 3.55 metres. To help keep travellers safe and traffic flowing efficiently as part of counterflow operations, the speed limit on the bridge was permanently lowered from 90 km/h to 70 km/h.
We also strengthened the bridge to accommodate the additional weight of another lane of traffic, including bridge main span deck repairs, modifications of expansion joints and localized stiffening/strengthening of girders.
Q. Who drives the zipper trucks?
A. Our maintenance contractor, Mainroad, has eight operators trained to drive the trucks. Two are needed to operate a zipper truck.
Q.How long would it take the zipper truck to open the 4th lane?
A. About 20 minutes.
Q. What is the speed of the zipper truck during the barrier transfer operation on the bridge?
A. Up to 10 km/h while transferring barrier sections on the bridge and up to 30 km/h when it is not zipping.
Q. Why are there two zipper trucks?
A. The second truck is on standby as a back up, if needed, and when routine maintenance is being performed on one of the trucks.
Q. How does the zipper truck operate during snow conditions?
A. The maintenance contractor plows the snow ahead of the zipper truck operation.
Q. Could ice get in the track? Is this system used anywhere else where the temperature drops below freezing?
A. There are several moveable barrier systems in eastern United States that experience cold weather, such as Philadelphia, New York and Washington DC.
Q. Is the truck always attached to the barrier, or does it move away from the bridge when not in use?
A. When the moveable barrier transfer is done, the zipper truck either parks beneath the Nordel Way overpass or the Cliveden Avenue overpass, depending on the direction of travel.
Q. What about when there’s an incident? Can operators be reactive and move the barrier outside of scheduled counterflow times?
A. Yes, if required, operators can react to events that warrant a change to the counterflow schedule.
Q. What if someone hits the barrier? How long do repairs take?
A. Each piece of moveable barrier can be replaced by pulling the interlocking pins out. We ordered additional barriers to have on-hand, just in case. Or, if the moveable barriers require minor straightening after being hit, it’s as simple as running the zipper truck across the length of the barriers.
So, there you have it, folks – a pretty cool tool being used to counter congestion in the Lower Mainland.

The Lodge at Black Rapids promises the outdoor enthusiasts everything they hope to experience—glaciers, mountains, wildlife in a fresh, clean environment.
The Lodge offers an invaluable opportunity for solitude and escape while embracing the beauty of this handmade, timber framed oasis. We encapsulate the history of this area while being deeply attached to the wilderness experience. Our food is homemade, with much of it grown organically in Delta Junction.
Construction began here, in summer of 2001, on the new Black Rapids Lodge. In addition to saving a piece of Alaska’s pioneer past, we are committed to creating a new tradition of affordable hospitality at the gateway of this most accessible, wild mountain wilderness. The two-story timber-frame Lodge has come off the drawing board and begun its vigil for the next hundred years. The lodge is a great showcase for Alaskan wood, all local, with Alaskan artists showcasing their talents and wares throughout the lodge.

Most Dangerous Ways To School | OIMJAKON (Russia) | Free Documentary
Siberia. Endless vastness – arctic temperatures. Even farther East than Japan and 5 000 kilometres north of Vladivostok lies Yakutia, the coldest Republik of Russia. Yakutsk is the capital of the Yakutia Republic and is located about 5100 kilometres east of Moscow. In the midst of it: Oimjakon. With its 500 residents the coldest inhabited place on earth. This village lies in a mountain valley on the upper reaches of the banks of the Indgirka River. One of the major reasons for the freezing temperatures is the great distance from the Atlantic Ocean and the humidity that the Ocean provides to a major part of the Northern Hemisphere. Masses of mountains shield Siberia against the warm air from the west and south, while in the opposite direction, the door to the Artic stands wide open. Thus in the winter, cold masses of air expand into the Siberian landscape completely unrestricted.
The average temperature in winter: Minus 40° Celsius. The children of the Siberian Oimjakon have the world`s coldest way to school. The extreme living conditions are completely normal for the residents of Oymyakon. This is also true for the Tariks family and their son Aljosha. He is 8 years old. The children of his age group are only excused from attending school on account of the cold at temperatures below minus 54° degrees.
Even before his departure for school Aljosha feels the grim cold. Lacking running water the house also has no bathroom. So Aljosha alredy has to go outside – to the unheated outside earth closet in the garden. Sascha’s mother cooks tea. In order to do so, she must go to outside to the front of the house, which is made of wood- as all houses in Oymyakon. Due to the great temperature differences here, concrete walls would soon crack and be destroyed. In the short summers, it can get quite warm in Oymyakon. In front of the wooden house the ice blocks are stored. The next-door farmer had cut out of the frozen river for them. There is no running water in the Pole of Cold, with temperatures dropping to -65 degrees Celsius; no pipe work has a chance. Aljoshas mother puts the ice in the pot and cooks some tea for her son.
Like every day, Aljosha must get ready to go to school. Like the majority of the other students, Sascha wears for the most part his traditional dress. The clothing prescribes to the onion-peel principle in order to protect the students from the Artic temperatures. His mother Irina has heated up the living room to 20° degrees. So when Aljosha opens the front door it is 70° degrees colder – every day life in Oimjakon. As soon as the children open the dormitory’s double doors, the icy cold brutally grabs hold of them. Within less than one second their nostrils become frozen.
Unlike the students in other parts of the world, the children from Oymyakon are seldom playful but instead very concentrated on their way to school. With quick steps, they travel in groups, attempting to put the 2 kilometer route behind them as quickly as possible. There are no signs of snow ball fights. The don’t spend a second of time watching the cows, which are kept up to nine months of the year in their stalls, and are now coincidentally being lead out of the barn for a drink. Even though the cows are wearing some sort of special “bras” which protect their udders from freezing.
Once in school building, Aljosha and the other students remove many of their layers of clothing, and get going with the school lessons. For the majority of them, a welcome diversion from the coldest inhabited town on the earth.

Most Dangerous Ways To School | NEPAL | Free Documentary
Those who attend school in the mountain village of Kumpur, walk across the mountains of the highest situated country on earth. Nearly half of Nepals lies more than 4 000 Meters above sea level. Today it`´s normal that the kids go to school in the valley, but just 50 years ago the village was completely self sufficient. Only if there was a lack of salt would someone twice a year hard off to refill the stock. Today the children go to the city almost on a daily basis and are immediately forced to cross the dangerous river. A village in distress is left behind. The village community Kumpur is spread across 18 farms on the Dhap Mountain. Their families live in a very remote area.
These families have lived on their land now for thousands of years herding their life-sustaining cattle without electricity, running water or contact to the outside world. Although they constantly ask themselves if the promise of an education justifies the danger of the path involved, they send their children day after day to school.

Living Universe | Journey To Another Stars - Documentary 4K
The Earth is Not Alone:
LIVING UNIVERSE is an interstellar adventure that seeks to answer the most profound question of all: are we alone? Based on the latest scientific knowledge, we will take a journey to a planet beyond our solar system in search of life.
We ask the world's leading space scientists what we might find if we travel to a neighboring star system. Recent breakthroughs have proven that every star we see in the sky is orbited by at least one planet, many similar to our own Earth. How do we get to these exoplanets? Once there, what will we find? And what will it mean for humanity when we discover we are not alone?
Our speculative journey through space is set a hundred years in the future - when we have the technology to journey well beyond our solar system. On this first expedition, our star ship Aurora will be piloted not by astronauts, but by the artificial intelligence (A.I.) we call Artemis. We imagine how Artemis travels through space, on its 25-year journey, at one fifth of the speed of light. Its objective is Minerva B, a planet much like our own, with an atmosphere, temperature and liquid water that appears a likely candidate to contain life.
With spectacular special effects we will reach and explore a new planet as we seek to answer the most profound question of all: are we alone in the universe? Our guides on this journey are narrator Dr Karl Kruszelnicki and as the voice of our AI, Artemis, real-life astrophysicist, Professor Tamara Davis.
Inspired and informed by our rapidly developing knowledge of far-off worlds, our best scientists - including NASA engineers, astrophysicists and astronomers - we will discover that this amazing journey is not only possible, it is inevitable. To venture into distant space is our destiny.
LIVING UNIVERSE captures a pivotal moment in the human story. A film full of insight and inspiration certain to thrill anyone who dreams of distant worlds, or have ever wondered why are we here?
Have you ever wondered that someone like you, sitting less than a mile away, in some other universe, exists? The possibility in itself seems frightening as well as astonishing.
From breaking news and intriguing historical documentaries to conspiracy theories, classified NASA files and UFO's. We provide you with material that the government doesn't want you to see. The Insomnia team comes up with a promise. To keep up with the same, the team now brings to us a documentary that aims to change your perspective Of another existence, of another possibility, as today, the scientists now believe there may really be the presence of a parallel universe - and in fact, also believe that there may be an infinite number of parallel universes, and where we live today just happens to be only one of them and many of these other parallel universes come with different laws of physics as well.
These other universes that we are talking about not only contain space, time and strange forms of exotic matter but to surprise you, Some of them may even contain you, only maybe in a slightly different form. The thought itself is quite intriguing and scary on the same hand. The basis of this theory is as we know it the idea that parallel universes are constantly spinning off from reality that we humans know of. Though generally ignored at the time, that theory has gone on to become not just a popular topic of study among respected physicists, but the inspiration for such popular films, television shows, and books as Star Trek and The Golden Compass. according to the sources.
The video soon progresses into the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP), that is now changing everything, as some say that the remarkable images reveal the true shape of the universe through baby pictures of the same from the time when it was 4 hundred thousand years old, looking so back in time, when there wasn't even the formation of galaxies yet. The WMAP is catching the very first signs of creation as it is officially tagged with measuring radiation that is left over from Big Bang. And now scientists have devised an experiment to find the overall true shape of the universe. The WMAP hence shows that the universe is flat. From here arises the possibility of more mind boggling parallel universe that are of the level-2 type and is made up of giant cosmic soap bubbles that float in hyperspace. Each of these bubbles within it has a whole universe. Now, the question that arises is that - Do we all live in a giant cosmic bubble?

Eri's Adventure - Columbia River 2018 Preparing to kayak Red Grave Canyon
I paddled the entire columbia river in 2018 for the purpose of teaching youth the art of adventure. This video describes my preparation for running red grave canyon on the columbia river outside of Golden BC. It talks about equipment and how to handle the normal fear of running a steep walled whitewater canyon solo. This section of the river is one of the most dangerous and should not be run without previous whitewater experience. If you capsize and are separated from your boat there is no chance of immediate rescue and you will face a long, dangerous, and life threatening swim. To avoid the canyon take out at Donald bridge and get back in at Lake Kinbasket resort.
