Golden Gate and Sterkfontein Dam
Golden Gate nature reserve and Sterkfontein dam is in the Free State province of South Africa and another one of my favourite places. Towns close by include Harrismith, Kestell and Clarence which is known for its beautiful and green landscapes. Unfortunately this was just a week before the rains started falling after winter, but still you will experience the beauty of this part of South Africa.

Kitespeed - 40 knots at Sterkfontein Dam, South Africa
This is the first footage I've taken using a waterproof camera attached to the center strut of the kite.
It was taken on 6 April 2008 at Sterkfontein Dam near Harrismith in South Africa.
The wind at the time was 20-30 knots and I used a 12 Naish Helix and a Cape Doctor custom speed board.
The wind increased to 25-35 knots later that day and I changed to a 9 Helix, unfortunately I did not have the camera on for that.
I reached a max of 43.5 knots and an average of 40 knots over 2/3 of the run.
I did this while using a hook on my right hand as I'd recently broken my arm near the wrist.

My brother and I joined joined our family friends for the Easter weekend at Sterkfontein Dam. It's right by Harrismith and is a beautiful hidden jewel in South Africa. It was my first time visiting Sterkfontein, and I can definitely say I'll be back again!
We stayed at Qwantani Resort in a beautiful chalet. There's just so much to do there! Our friend's brought their boat so we went fishing (it's catch and release there); hiking; horse riding and had lovely braai's on the patio each evening.

Nipple Hill and the Sterkfontein Downwinder
I don’t claim to be that good in a surfski especially on the downwind runs but I definitely enjoy it as much as anything else I do. Some things however just make downwinding a lot more fun, whether you in a ski, kite or on a sup and they are things like not having a killer shore break, no sharks, and not having the fear of the very big blue ocean.
Flat water downwinding is becoming more and more popular and by that I mean dams and some very wide rapid free rivers. South Africa is by no means left out here. There are a good few venues but Sterkfontein Dam in the Freestate, just outside Harrismith on the way to Clarens must rate tops. It has been a long standing venue for kiteboarding and windsurfing with winds as predictable as what winds can get and they get strong, up to 50 knots. The best winds occur in the Spring and Autumn but ahead of most cold fronts there is something to be had. Wind Guru does also predict quite accurately.
All the usual safety precautions need to be taken into account like a good pfd, leash, and definitely warm gear as the water is cold. The clear blue water gets the much sort after wind swell you need from what is otherwise known as the Berg Wind or North West. It blows from out the direction of the hill known as the Nipple, for obvious reasons. Linking runs here is as easy as it gets. The most used section of the dam is based in the Nature Reserve on the Harrismith side, on the Oliviers Hoek Pass road.
There are options to arrange a drop-off and paddle downwind from the Clarens road but a morning paddle before the wind gets up is worth it. The downwind stretch from Nipple Hill to Kite Bay is about 4km’s. It would start off calm and get wilder as you make your way into the dam. There is the option for an 8km run past the Cliffs to the Island where the wind would be hitting you a bit from the right.
The footage shown here was a paddle into the wind from Kite Bay and was me just testing the runs out. It is the last kilometer or less of the stretch. I had already had a full day of kiting so it shows just how easy it is to get on the runs as I was pretty tired to start with. Once again please note that this is not a place for absolute beginners, the swell does get up and you can even prone surf this place. To date I have never done the full downwind so can’t say for sure how it will play out.
Hopefully this video helps bring the serious paddlers out the closet who may have done it or who would be keen to put together a team to go give it the full go. In the kiting scene for a few years we successfully ran a National Freestyle event here and later till not too long ago a very much enjoyed Speed Kiting event was held with some ridiculously fast speeds being laid down.
The area surrounding the dam is also great with the Golden Gate Park and Clarens not too far out, for when there is no wind, accommodation in the reserve needs to be booked ahead of time but there is always camping for the brave and other options outside the reserve. Be warned, don’t be over eager to camp down by the water. Tents regularly vanish in the wind, no jokes.
There are downwinders for all here, Sup, Ski and Kite.
