Fairbanks Riverboat Discovery Tour
If you're in Fairbanks, Alaska then I'd highly recommend the Discovery Riverboat Tour. This attraction on an authentic sternwheeler riverboat stops off at a Chena Indian village where you see a few demonstrations and then can walk the grounds. The tour also has a bush pilot demonstration where a float plane takes off and lands right by the boat, which was pretty dramatic. The boat stops in front of the late 4 time Iditarod champion Susan Butcher's kennels and you are seen a dog sled team training exercise. All during the Riverboat cruise the guide informs you about the area including geographical, cultural and historical points of interest. If you like this Fairbanks Riverboat Discovery Tour video then make sure to give it a thumbs up!

Riverboat Cruise Fairbanks AK September 2010
Climb on board an authentic Alaskan sternwheeler, the Riverboat Discovery, and take a journey back in time along the Chena and Tanana Rivers. Since 1950, the Binkley family has operated riverboat cruises in Fairbanks; now you can cruise out into nature with third- and fourth-generation captains and experience the area's history and beauty firsthand. Take a tour with native Alaskans in a traditional village and meet some of the pioneers who call this land home.
Sternwheeler boats transport you out into the Alaskan wilderness, but also back to a time when gold-rush fever was sweeping across the state. You climb aboard either the Discovery II or Discovery III for a fully narrated three-and-a-half-hour tour. As the wheel churns up the water, you'll watch the trees go by, looking for wildlife and heading out to see the wedding of the waters where the Chena and Tanana Rivers meet. The boiling current of the glacial Tanana creates clouds of silt that rise and fall as they meet the clear Chena waters. As you cruise along you'll enjoy complimentary fresh baked donuts and coffee and sample Captain Jim's smoked salmon. As a special treat, you'll watch one of Alaska's bush pilots take off from a grassy strip right along the river.
But all your time isn't spent on the boat. You'll make an unforgettable one-hour stop at Chena Indian Village. Here native Alaskan guides will take you around their Athabascan village, letting you in on the secrets of their heritage and showing off their beautiful beadwork.

the fairbanks museum houses
Elaborate displays on native indian and eskimo culture,
Wildlife, and technology. These exquisite examples of
ornate apparel were fashioned from the many natural
materials available to the alaskan native.
To the native american, every day objects were sacred,
And worthy of time consuming artistic embellishment.
The beauty and craftsmanship of the artifacts on display
Here reflect a world view that is as worthy of preserving
as the endangered species that once shared this great
Land with its first human inhabitants. Complementing
The native crafts, are displays of the fruits of
Man's labor in more recent times. One popular exhibit
Features the gleam of gold that brought men from all

Sanctuary for migratory fowl.
A few miles north of fairbanks, you can drive right
Up to the great alaskan oil pipeline, one of the
Huge technological feats of modern times.
although the pipeline looks a little incongruous
winding its way through the wilderness landscape,
It was designed at a time when america was just
Awakening to the need for ecological preservation,
And it has many ecological safety features built
Into its design.
Portions of the pipeline are elevated
To allow the unimpeded migration of the caribou.
The pipeline is designed to slide on teflon sleds as
Changes in temperature cause it to expand and contract.
Expansion bumpers provide cushioning for these changes
And are part of the engineering features that assure
Structural integrity during an earthquake of up to 8.5

In order to keep the warm oil in
The pipeline from melting the permafrost below, the

the high tech design of the pipeline is quite a contrast
To the old machinery displayed here in alaskaland's mining

Bush Floatplane Demonstration - River Cruise on Riverboat Discovery, Fairbanks, Alaska
Aug 2010 - A cruise of the great rivers of Alaska! We took three-hour cruise that took us into the heart of Alaska and introduced to a family who has made the rivers of Alaska a way of life for five generations. We witnessed a bush floatplane take-off alongside the boat, visited the home and kennels of the late four-time Iditarod winner Susan Butcher and see her champion sled dogs in action. Got immersed into the ancient Athabascan Indian culture when our Alaskan Native Guides took us on a personalized tour of the Chena Indian Village. The Binkley family invited us to experience a slice of Alaskan life!
We board an authentic Alaskan sternwheeler, the Riverboat Discovery, and take a journey back in time along the Chena and Tanana Rivers. Wildlife, History, and More
Sternwheeler boats transport you out into the Alaskan wilderness, but also back to a time when gold-rush fever was sweeping across the state. You climb aboard either the Discovery II or Discovery III for a fully narrated three-and-a-half-hour tour. As the wheel churns up the water, see if you can spot some of Alaska's abundant wildlife along the riverbank. Later on you'll see one of Alaska's bush pilots taking off right from the River. At a riverside fish camp, learn how Alaska natives traditionally prepared salmon for smoking and drying. (You'll find out how good it tastes when you sample Captain Jim's smoked salmon). Further down the river, share in the excitement, joy and hard work of an Iditarod dog kennel, run by the family of the late Iditarod champion Susan Butcher. The Discovery's pilot won't let you miss the amazing site we Alaskans call the wedding of the waters, where the Chena and Tanana Rivers meet. The boiling current of the glacial Tanana creates clouds of silt that rise and fall as they meet the clear Chena waters.

Jim Colver Gets The Tanana Boat Launch Built!
When I was your Representative, we got projects done. Delta residents said they wanted a boat launch on the Tanana River. We got it done.
In the last two years other projects I got started - stopped with George Rauscher, because he simply didn't know what to do.
Let's get projects moving again. On August 21, vote for Jim Colver in the Republican Primary.

Tanana Valley, Alaska ~~~
This is the famous Tanana Valley in this video.
I hitched a ride just ten miles south of Fairbanks just to grab this shot. All this land in the valley below is owned by Fort Wainwright and there's also an early warning missile detection outpost in this valley.
Off in the distance is Mt. McKinley covered in snow year round.
