Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Stevens Point (#707)
[Latest Airdate: May 31, 2018]
[Original Airdate: February 22, 2018]
When John said, Let's get straight to the point, we're so glad we took him literally because Stevens Point earned tons of brownie points! Everyone in this fabulous city pointed us to a great episode, and stayed on point throughout with their pointed remarks.
Point Brewery was an obvious (and great) choice, and you can't talk about Stevens Point without pointing out the trivia contest. But we are so glad when we can point to the not-so-obvious community stars, too. What do governors for dams, wheelchairs, potatoes, toys, tea, women's clothing, Father Fat's food, Iroquois raised beadwork and art paper have in common? Yep. All pointed out in this episode.
But it's pointless to continue with our list because after watching this episode, you will completely get the point. Stevens Point IS the point!

Pabst. Schlitz. Blatz. Miller. These brands are synonymous with Wisconsin where the beer business boomed at the turn of the twentieth century. Prior to Prohibition, the beer industry spread throughout the state, reaching north to include Stevens Point Brewery and the Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company and west to the G. Heileman Brewing Company and many smaller breweries in between.

2017 Good Ideas Day 2 - Bottoms UP: A Toast to Wisconsin's Historic Bars & Breweries
Bottoms UP: A Toast to Wisconsin’s Historic Bars & Breweries, Beer and Bar Industry in WisconsinJames Draeger, Author
“Bottoms Up” celebrates Wisconsin’s taverns and the breweries that fueled them. Beginning with inns and saloons, the book explores the rise of taverns and breweries, the effects of temperance and Prohibition, and attitudes about gender, ethnicity, and morality. It traces the development of the megabreweries,
dominance of the giants, and the emergence of microbreweries. Contemporary photographs of unusual and distinctive bars and breweries of all eras, historical photos, postcards, advertisements,
and breweriana illustrate the story of how Wisconsin came to dominate brewing and the place that bars - and beer hold in our social and cultural history.
James Draeger is an architectural historian and the State Historic Preservation Officer at the Wisconsin Historical Society with more than twenty-nine years of historic preservation experience. From roadside architecture to Northwoods resorts, Draeger celebrates
the importance of ordinary buildings to our daily lives through his research, writing, and lectures.
