Foveaux Strait crossing from Oban, Stewart Island, to Bluff, New Zealand
On 15th March 2010 I took the small catamaran ferry the 25 miles across the Foveaux Straight from Oban on Stewart Island to Bluff on the southern tip of New Zealand. The day before all the ferries had been cancelled due to high seas. This video captures the beauty and power of the sea I experienced that day.
The other 50 or so passengers were behind me inside under cover. Occasionally one would venture out, groan and go back in again. Our luggage is in those tarpaulin covered tubs. The one hour trip across the Foveaux Straight will challenge even the strongest stomach. Brilliant.
However, this is nothing compared to what these poor passengers had to suffer travelling between the North and the South Island across the Cook Strait.
No to mention this one of a fishing boat off Iceland

Guided Walk Stewart Island New Zealand
For more information & to book:
Immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of Stewart Island. Our small group guided walks to Little River provides an unforgettable insight into the diversity and beauty of this island sanctuary.
Learn about Stewart Island's historic sawmilling industry and the modern-day paua and oyster industries en route to Lee Bay. Then join your guide for a walk through tall native forest and along beautiful coastlines to Little River. This charming estuary is the perfect place to immerse yourself in the tranquility of Stewart Island.
Alternatively your guided walk may include a visit to Ackers Point lighthouse and a visit New Zealand's oldest building, Ackers Cottage. This is a great spot for watching little blue penguins and titi (muttonbirds or sooty shearwaters) returning ashore to their nesting sites. Enjoy fantastic views across Paterson Inlet and Ulva Island to the mainland.
Throughout your walk, a local nature guide will tell you about Stewart Island's unique cultural and natural heritage and point out the native plant life. You will also gain a first-hand understanding of the work local residents are doing to preserve the abundant bird population.
For each adult completing our guided walk, Stewart Island Experience will contribute NZD$5 to the Stewart Island Rakiura Community and Environment Trust.
In order to participate in this activity you will need to get to Stewart Island. Ferries depart daily from Bluff and can be booked via our website.
Rakiura - Stewart Island, New Zealand
Just twenty minutes by plane from Invercargill, or an hour by ferry from Bluff, Stewart Island / Rakiura is a place where you can experience lush rainforest, clear, clean water and abundant marine and bird life.
In 2002 the very qualities that make this a great place to treasure, were recognized in the formation of the Rakiura National Park, comprising 85% of the island's 1,570 sq. kilometers. The description of the island by naturalist Leonard Cockayne in 1909 as an actual piece of the primeval world is still relevant today.
Oban is the only settlement on the island and has a population of around 400 people. Despite having few shops in the township, nearly all items visitors require van be purchased from the town's general store. There are no bank or ATM facilities here.
Whether you come to enjoy the land and seascapes, view the wildlife, walk, boat, fish, dive, kayak, hunt or just relax, Stewart Island / Rakiura will be an experience that will draw you back here again and again.

-- About this video --
This morning we are heading down to the waterfront of Oban, Stewart Island where we are meeting Dave and Bean at the Rakiura Jade Studio. We are going to be carving each other a Maori jade pendant!
Jade is otherwise known as greenstone or pounamu and is a precious stone in the Maori culture. One way the Maori use jade or greenstone is to carve pendants with meanings behind them. Traditionally, you gift a greenstone pendant to someone else, not yourself, so that’s why we are carving jade in New Zealand for each other.
Rakiura Jade is set on the waterfront of Oban in Stewart Island. The process to carve your own greenstone takes about five hours but it’s a relaxing and interesting process with an awesome greenstone souvenir at the end.
Greenstone carving on Stewart Island is one of the many awesome activities on Stewart Island and we’re so stoked to have been able to do greenstone carving in New Zealand ourselves.
So what do you think of carving greenstone in New Zealand? Would you add it to your Stewart Island bucket list? LUK in the comments.

Stewart Island Wildlife Adventure | vLog #26 | Nature Travel Guide
Stewart Island has some of my favourite places I have been wildlife watching. At Mason By I saw a kiwi as a reward for some crazy-difficult hiking, on Ulva Island I got to see Yellowhead and I really enjoyed the dawn chorus at Oban.

New Zealand Stewart Island
The 3 Day Circuit of Stewart Island and Oban Township. Includes trip to Ulver Island Reserve where we sighted Weka, Kaka and the rare Saddleback . Twelve km of the track were a frieghtful mess because of track maintenance, but I didn't feel much like getting the camera out as I was slipping down yet another endless bank of mud. So, here are the good bits. Next time we will make time for the 10 day circuit and yet more endless mud!
