Dürnstein (Austria) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Dürnstein in Austria.
The Wachau is the most beautiful section of Austria’s Danube Valley and Dürnstein is a fascinating small town with a long history. Dürnstein is a splendid place, once well protected by a castle and defensive walls. Its sixteenth and seventeenth century buildings and narrow streets were decorated with Bacchanian Baroque in the eighteenth century by art-minded religious leaders. A magnificent portal leads to the courtyard of an Augustinian canon monastery that dates back to 1410 and that was renovated in 1980. Master builders such as Joseph Muggenast, Jakob Prandtauer and Matthias Steinl created this sacred splendour for provost Hieronymus. The interior of the church is decorated with lush Baroque and its high altar and choir stalls are remarkable works of art. The tabernacle is of a world globe shining with a golden light above the altar and sacred images, paintings plus a splendid pipe organ. The ruins of Kuenringer Castle are located here and the legend of the adventures of English prince, Richard The Lionheart, and his faithful servant, the minstrel, Blondel, has survived to the present day. Richard was imprisoned here and released only after payment of thirty-five thousand kilos of silver. Dürnstein has always been influenced by the Danube and its history continues to be reflected within its waters.

The Wachau from Pöchlarn via Melk to Dürnstein - Austria HD Travel Channel
The area around the town of Poechlarn was already populated 6.000 years ago. Here, the Romans erected a fort. The place is known as ancestral castle of Rüdiger of Bechelaren in the Song of the Nibelungs. The most famous citizen of the town is the Austrian expressionist Oskar Kokoschka.
Only a few kilometers away is Melk with its famous Melk Abbey. Originally there was a castle, which Margrave Leopold I from the House of Babenberg made his residence after he had been enfeoffed by Emperor Otto II of Lower Austria with this area in 976.
Thus begins the chapter of Austrian history which ends with the Imperial and Royal Monarchy. During the tenure of his successor, Margrave Henry I, Ostarrîchi was mentioned the first time and St. Koloman, the son of an Irish king was executed. The stoning took place in Stockerau and he was buried in Melk. Probably the existence of such an important tomb led to the founding of the Melk Abbey.
The abbey in its present form was built by the baroque architect Jakob Prandtauer and is famous for its valuable furnishing.
Not far from Melk is Schallaburg Castle, one of the most beautiful Renaissance castles in Austria. It is frequently used for major traveling exhibitions and in 2006 one could visit Genghis Khan and his Heirs - The Empire of the Mongols.
Along apricot orchards we reach Dürnstein, where Richard I Lionheart of England was kept prisoner in the Castle.

please read more:

【HD】???? Hike to Dürnstein Castle in Austria
In this video walk I hike to Dürnstein Castle on a sunny Saturday in spring. Located in the wonderful Wachau Valley in Austria, the town and the castle are a famous tourist spot.
After following the road through the old town of Dürnstein, I take a somewhat hidden passage to get to the Danube river. Sadly, I couldn't access the town's famous blue church because due to ongoing construction works.
After that I follow the path leading up to the old stronghold. The hike to Dürnstein Castle didn't take very long, even though the way was quite steep. The amazing view over the Wachau Valley was well worth the effort.

Dürnstein Castle Wachau Austria 01
Dürnstein is a small town on the Danube river in the Krems-Land district, in the Austrian state of Lower Austria. It is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the Wachau region and also a well-known wine growing area. The municipality consists of the Katastralgemeinden Dürnstein, Oberloiben and Unterloiben. The town gained its name from the medieval castle which overlooked it. The castle was called Duerrstein or Dürrstein, from the German duerr/dürr meaning dry and Stein, stone. The castle was dry because it was situated on a rocky hill, high above the damp conditions of the Danube at the base of the hill, and it was built of stone. Dürnstein Castle was first mentioned in 1192, when, in the castle above the town, King Richard I Lionheart of England was held captive by Duke Leopold V of Austria after their dispute during the Third Crusade. Richard had personally offended Leopold by casting down his standard from the walls at the Battle of Acre, and the duke suspected that King Richard ordered the murder of his cousin Conrad of Montferrat in Jerusalem. In consequence Pope Celestine III excommunicated Leopold for capturing a fellow crusader. The duke finally gave the custody of Richard to Emperor Henry VI, who imprisoned Richard at Trifels Castle. Dürnstein Castle was almost completely destroyed by the troops of the Swedish Empire under Field Marshal Lennart Torstenson in 1645.
Dürnstein Abbey (Stift Dürnstein) was established in 1410 by Canons Regular from Třeboň and from 1710 rebuilt in a Baroque style according to plans by Joseph Munggenast, Jakob Prandtauer and Matthias Steinl. The monastery was dissolved by order of Emperor Joseph II in 1788 and fell to the Herzogenburg Priory. During the War of the Third Coalition the Battle of Dürenstein was fought nearby on November 11, 1805.
