Los Fresnos businesses may be impacted by new Causeway plans
A new way to the beach will make the travel a little easier for vacation goers. But as for the people who live in the areas along the way, there is concern that less traffic will bring less business.
It will negatively affect all of our retail establishments.
Mark Milum, the City Manager for Los Fresnos, says that now that there are plans for a new causeway, it could hinder the businesses along Highway 100 that have done so well due to visitors and tourists. But he also recognizes there is no doubt that another route to the Island is desperately needed.
It's one of those catch 22 things. We as a neighboring community to SPI and a good friend of SPI, we know it's needed for those folks. You can't deny that a second causeway is not needed.
Cameron County officials believe that although the new causeway will help with backed-up traffic issues during busy seasons, the fact that the new causeway will be a toll road might make many drivers to stay along highway 100.
the existing causeway will remain there. It will remain a free causeway. And so the bulk of the traffic is going to continue to go down through Los Fresnos, through Highway 100, to Port Isabel, and on to the Island. We believe it's a regional project, the entire region is gonna benefit from it.
We'll be ok. We're growing and well continue to grow. Well always be a bedroom community, and we love that. Thats fine. We just will support our retail establishments and help them along the way.
