STINGLESS Jellyfish lake | KAKABAN Berau Borneo TRAVEL VLOG
In this Indonesia Travel Vlog we visit Kakaban. A stingless jellyfish lake in Berau Regency, Derawan, off of the island of Borneo (aka Kalimantan).
This isn't the only stingless jellyfish lake in the world. The most famous being in Palau and Siargao, Philippines. The jellies in all of these lakes are called stingless because there are no natural predators here, and they do not have the need for protection. The reality is though, they do in fact sting, but the stingers on their tentacles (called nematocysts) are too small to pierce the skin of people. If you're a small fish, or other creature... you're lunch.
There are 4 species of Jellies in this lake, and in this Indonesia Travel Vlog, we go exploring to find each of them.

✯ Experiences over Possessions ✯
INDONESIA // Stingless Jellyfish Lake in Derawan
Join me, and 4 species of stingless jellyfish.
Kakaban Island is part of the Derawan Islands in East Kalimantan, Indonesia.
Home to 4 types of jellyfish which have all evolved to have be stingless ( harmless to humans )
I was lucky enough to see 3 species.
Moon Jelly (aurelia aurita)
Upside Down Jellyfish (cassiopea ornata)
Spotted Jellyfish (mastigias papua )
This lake was once a part of the ocean but was separated a very long time ago. It is now surrounded by a wall of mangroves.
Some scientists say that the jellyfish have evolved without predators, losing their stingers over time.
Other sources say that they do still have stinging cells but they have evolved to no longer be harmful to humans.
Either way, it is a natural miracle, and world wonder, a rare experience which I will ever forget.
If you visit this area, please remember to be spatially aware in the water, don't wear fins to avoid kicking the jellyfish and most of all, dont leave any rubbish behind!
Hope you enjoy the vid.
Much love.

From huge swarms of stingless jellyfish to kaleidoscopic coral clinging to the fringing mangroves, a swim here feels like floating through space.

Kakaban Island / Stingless Jellyfish Lake
Kakaban island is part of the Derawan Islands, East Kalimantan, Indonesia. The most distinctive feature is the huge brackish water lake in the middle of the island, in the local dialect Kakaban means hug as the island hugs the lake from the surrounding seawater. In the middle of this island is a mangrove-fringed lake, slightly above sea level, where thousands of jellyfish which are harmless to humans live, making it interesting for diving. The jellyfish consist of four different species which do not have the ability to harm humans with their stinging cells.
Famous Jellyfish lake of Pulau Kakaban (Indonesia)
In the north east of Kalimantan there is a group of small islands, the Derawan Islands.
80 000 years ago one atoll called Pulau Kakaban were pressed by vulcanic activities on an higher level. And so the lagune becomes an inland lake where all the 4 different kinds of jellyfish can survive without any enemy. So they lost there stinging poison and everybody can swim with them very carefully.
It`s an extremly amazing experience.

Jellyfish lakes in Indonesia - Kakaban, Misool
In Indonesia there is some islands with lakes, some of them are very popular, some not explored yet, where thousands of jellyfish live, making it interesting for diving. One of them is Kakaban island in Derawan archipelago, East Kalimantan. It has biggest stingless jellyfish lake in the world. Here the jellyfish consist of four different species which do not have the ability to harm humans with their stinging cells. They are Aurelia aurita with a transparent body, Tripedalia cystophora which is fingertip size, Mastigias papua is like a green-brown bulb, and Cassiopea ornata which is an upside-down jellyfish with upright tentacles. Although they cannot sting humans, they still have poison and can sting their prey. Similar lakes exist in other parts of Indonesia - for instance, Raja Ampat, Misool.
The lakes have warm brackish water and the bottom is covered with marine green algae. There are other animals, including sea cucumbers, gobies, sea anemones, tunicates, crustaceans, nudibranchs, orange purple clams and yellow clams on the branches, and snakes.

hidden and isolated from the surrounding sea lies a kingdom where the rare Stingless Jellyfish exist. Here, at Togean Island. They're uniquely different. Soo cute and fluffy. Without the existence of main predator they have evolved loosing its weapon on the tentacle and stink ability. They've live here for hundred years, perhaps more.
This lake is so beautiful. so green. peaceful. and deep (couldn't see base floor)
