Croatia Sailing Trip | Part 8 | VIS Island - Komiža town | Stiniva Beach
Part 8 video footage of Our Croatia sailing trip shows some sight seeing from the Island of VIS, its marina mainland shore and Fort George along with a swim stop in the beautiful Stiniva beach.
Vis is a small Croatian island in the Adriatic Sea. The farthest inhabited island off the Croatian mainland, Vis had a population of 3,617 in 2011. Vis has an area of 90.26 square kilometres (34.85 square miles). Its highest point is Hum, which is 587 metres (1,926 feet) above sea level. The island's two largest settlements are the town of Vis on the island's eastern side (the settlement for which the island was originally named) and Komiža on its western coast.
Once known for its thriving fishing industry in the late 19th and early 20th century, the main present-day industries on the island are agriculture and tourism. Vis town and Komiža are also seats of separate administrative municipalities which cover the entire island and nearby islets, which are both part of Split-Dalmatia County. In 2017 Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again was filmed on location on Vis.
Vis was inhabited by the time of the Neolithic period. In the 4th century BC, the Greek tyrant of Syracuse, Dionysius the Elder, founded the colony Issa on the island. Later, it became an independent polis, and even minted its own money and founded its own colonies, the most notable of which was Aspálathos (the modern-day city of Split). In the 1st century BC, the island was held by the Liburnians. Its importance in the region ended with the first Illyro-Roman war (29-219 BC). Having sided with Pompeus during the period of civil struggles in Rome, became an oppidum civium Romanorum in 47 BC.
Until 1797, the island was under the rule of the Republic of Venice. During this time large settlements developed along the coastline (Comisa (now Komiža) and Lissa (now Vis)). Administratively, the island of Lissa was for centuries bound to the island of Lesina, now named Hvar. The Venetian influence is still recognizable in architecture found on the island, and some vocabulary of the Croatian dialect spoken locally is Venetian in origin.[citation needed]
After the short-lived Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy, with Italian as the official language, the island was ruled by the Austrian Empire from 1814. It maintained its Italian name of Lissa. After the end of World War I, it was under Italian rule again in the period from 1918 to 1921, according to the provisions of the 1915 Treaty of London, before it was ceded to Kingdom of Yugoslavia as part of the 1920 Treaty of Rapallo.
The sea to the north of the island was the location of two battles:
on 13 March 1811, a small Royal Navy squadron under the command of Captain William Hoste, defeated a larger French squadron in the Battle of Lissa (1811)
on 20 July 1866, the smaller Austrian fleet, under Admiral Tegetthoff, attacked the Italian fleet, under Admiral Persano, defeating the larger Italian force and sinking the Italian ironclad Re d'Italia in the Battle of Lissa (1866).

Vis Island, Croatia
Stiniva Beach, Island Vis (Croatia) - Best beach in Europe | Plaža Stiniva
Stiniva beach is located on the island of Vis in southern Croatia. It is a beautiful hidden beach on the southern part of the island. This beach is about 35 meters long with small pebbles and perfectly clear sea. This breathtaking bay can be reached by boat or on foot. here are several trips organized from the town of Vis, but if you want to emerge yourself in this beautiful nature that offers the island we advise you to go on foot taking the narrow steep path that goes from the hamlet Žužeca. It will take about 15 minutes to reach the bay and the beach. Or you can rent a boat in the town of Vis and visit this beach.

The BEST WAY to get to VIS Island.

------------------
It turns out to be a challenge to get from Hvar to Vis island. Vis is one of the most mysterious islands in Croatia, and as such, its is one of the most visited islands. Vis was for long a military base for the Yugoslav army until 1989. During those years, visiting Vis was highly restricted for the locals and impossible for visitors. For this reason, Vis has been abandoned and preserved as no other island in Croatia.
As it happens across Mediterranean islands, Vic’s lack of development is one of its greatest assets for tourism. If you want authenticity, nature, peace and adventures, as well as good food, Vis is quite the place to go.
---------------------
Top thing to do in Vis:
Stiniva Cove
Its natural unusual appearance makes it one of the best places in Vis. The small entrance (4-5 meters) all of the sudden becomes a wide and beautiful seaside cove.
Once inside, you will find a very nice and welcoming bar to treat yourself a cold beverage or a good snack. It is always recommended to visit the cove during the morning hours.
Srebrna Bay
A gorgeous pebble beach with unusual large pebbles, located close to Rukavac, a small village.
It is not very well known for much of the touristic guides around the area, which mean is the perfect place to find a quiet place away from the buzz of tourists.
Mount Hum
This mountain is one of the best locations if what you care about is sightseeing. Indeed, it is the highest elevation of Vis with 587 metres.
Be sure to visit it during the day if you want to have a 360 degree of the island and the beautiful blue sea.
The Green Cave
Located on the south side of Vis, this amazing natural wonder full of reflections, clear sea and mystery is one of the places you should not miss whilst in Vis.
The cave is called green as the reflection caused by the sea floor and natural light results in an abundance of green algae located at the rocky base of the cave’s entrance. What is best, you can actually swim inside! If you are looking for some adrenaline boost, don’t forget you can also dive and explore around.
