Macedonia, Stobi ancient city
Photographer:Samuel Magal (samuel@sites-and-photos.com)
Stobi developed from a Paeonian settlement established in the Archaic period. Located on the northern side of a terrace, the early town covered an area of about 25,000 m2. Its proximity to the junction of the Erigón and Axiós Rivers as well as its position in the fertile central Vardar valley allowed it quickly to develop a flourishing economy and to establish trade. Nearby Mount Klepa was a lucrative source of marble. The initial Paeonian population was later supplemented by other immigrant groups.

While exploring Macedonia, David makes a stop at the ancient city of Stobi to check out the ruins, mosaics, and history behind this fascinating archaeological site. Ancient Stobi is one of the most significant historical finds in Macedonia because of how many eras are represented here… Stobi was first founded by the Kingdom of Paeonia in the 7th century, then eventually overtaken by the Kingdom of Macedon, and later on by the Romans and Byzantines.
Stobi’s importance stems from its strategic position along an old Roman trading route – a road that led from the Danube River (Serbia) all the way down to the Aegean Sea (Greece). Because Stobi was located along this road, it became an important trading hub. The presence of basilicas and religious mosaics demonstrate that the ancient city of Stobi was an early Christian city. There is perhaps no stronger evidence of this than in the baptisterium. Other ruins to see include the Roman theatre and Roman forum.
The Ancient city of Stobi is open daily 10 am to 3 pm. Admission is 120 Macedonian Denar.

Historical sites in Stobi
The Northern Basilica. The church has three main parts: a narthex, an exonarthex separated by colonnades and an atrium constructed mostly of marble. In the northern part there is a Baptistry and in the southern part are Slavic graves. The church, which was built at the beginning of the 5th century, can be entered from the street Via Principalis Inferior. The Civil Basilica is south of the north basilica and was discovered in 1937. In 1956 archaeologists found that there were seven building phases. Between the North and Civil Basilicas are the ancient Thermae Minores, or Little Baths made of stone blocks.
Ruins at Stobi
The Central Basilica and Synagogue can be entered from the Via Principalis street. The Central Basilica was built on a Synagogue at the beginning of the 5th century and had two building phases. The floor of the Synagogue was discovered 1.5 m (4.9 ft) under the level of the central basilica. Dating from the 4th century, it was built on an older synagogue from the 3rd century, created by the father of the Synagogue of Stobi, Tiberius Claudius Polycharmos. Inside were two vases dating from 121 to 125.
The House of the Psalms, in front of the central basilica, has a central room with a mosaic floor, a room with colonnades, a big pool and columns in the western part of the yard.
Via Axia is one of the main streets in Stobi. It is oriented east-west with only small part of the street discovered.
The Main Town Public Fountain is located on a small square created by the streets Via Axia and Via Principalis Inferior.
The Magnae Thermae, or Big Bath, discovered in 1931, consisted of two rooms: one large room with a statue and a pool made of stone blocks. The reconstructed bath was in use until the late 6th century.
Via Principalis Inferior was a major street of the city running from the central basilica to the main town fountain, then to house of Partenius, the 'Palace of Theodosius' and the house of Psalms.
The House of Peristerius was a large living complex for several families and also had rooms for shops. The Peristerius family owned the rooms in the southern part of the complex. The central part of this complex is a yard under open sky, with fountains on the western side. In the eastern part is an excellent example of floor mosaics and in the middle there is a fountain made of marble. The complex and the mosaics date from the late 4th or the early 5th century. The Via Theodosia street is parallel to Via Axia and it is located between the house of Peristerius and the 'palace of Theodosius'.
The Palace of Theodosius was where the emperor Theodosius first stayed while in Stobi. The floor is covered with marble blocks and the peristyle with mosaics in the technique opus sectile. The other rooms are also decorated, dating from the 4th to the 5th century.
The House of Partenius is located near the southern part of the Palace of Theodosius, and is connected to it by a wall making it into an L-shaped building standing for Latin.
Valavica (Domus Fullonica) is a complex of connected shops and residences, built on older objects. The name regards only one phase of building in the small yard, whereas in the 5th century there was also a workshop for painting and making carpets. The complex was in use from the 1st century to the 6th century.
The Episcopal Basilica, dating from the 5th and 6th centuries, with a baptistery to the south. A peacock from the baptistery's mosaic floor is depicted on the reverse of the Macedonian 10 denars banknote, issued in 1996,[6] and of the 10 denars coin, issued in 2008.[7]

Touring the Povardarie Wine Region in Macedonia
Touring the Povardarie Wine Region in Macedonia
►Read the blog:
In this episode, David spends a couple of days touring the Povardarie Wine Region in Macedonia – one of the country’s three main wine producing regions. Here, he explores three of the region’s top wineries: Tikves, Stobi, and Popova Kula.
Learn more about these wineries in our article: Wineries You Must Visit in the Povardarie Wine Region
During his September visit to Povardarie David was fortunate enough to be there during the annual grape harvest. Winemaking has been a part of Macedonian culture for more than 2,000 years! A visit to Povardarie will give you the opportunity to taste several Macedonian varieties, as well as international wines.
David begins his wine adventure at Tikves. Here, David was given the opportunity to see how the grapes are separated and cleaned before being pressed. The entire process of picking grapes takes about a month. At Tikves David tries several Balkan wines and a very good rakia.
Next stop of the day is Stobi Winery for a tour of the fermenting tanks and a peak at their harvesting process. During his lunch at Stobi David tried five types of wine. He also left with a couple of his favorites like Moscat and a Macedonian red wine called Vranec.
Like the other two wineries, Popova Kula was in the midst of a harvest. David and the crew woke up at 5:30 AM to catch the action for themselves. David even took part in the action and was cutting grapes alongside the other workers in the vineyards. Popova Kula is on our list of 10 Places You Must Visit in Macedonia
Popova Kula produces over 20 wines, many of which are Balkan varieties like Zilavka, Stanushina, and Prokupec.
The best part of Popova Kula winery is that you can stay here to get to know the wine, food, and local culture. Guests are invited to see a traditional Macedonian folk dance and join in if they wish.
Touring wineries in Macedonia’s Povardarie wine region is a must for any wine-lover in Macedonia.

The Truth about Macedonia
Η αλήθεια για την Μακεδονία.
Вистината за Македонија.
Greek Macedonia. The only Macedonia that exists.
Two days ago, the corrupted Greek government signed the Prespa Agreement, with which, against the will of the majority of Greek people and despite the marginal prevalence in the voting (153 out of 300 deputies), they gave the name North Macedonia to our neighbor country, Macedonian to their language etc
People talk about the biggest betrayal of our time.

This post is not about hate. People from Skopje are our brothers. But political interests are trying to counterfeit historical truth, and this is what we are fighting for

Ancient Greek City of Heraclea in Macedonia
Heraclea was ounded in the Fourth Century BC by Philip II, the father of Alexander the Great but most of the remains are from the Roman and early Christian period. It became an important trading town since it was located at the edge of the Macedonia border until conquered by the Romans who destroyed its political power. The main Roman road, Via Egnatia (we saw that in Bulgaria), went through Heraclea, and made the town prosperous.
Sights include: A theatre built by Emperor Hadrian which fell out of use when gladiator fights were banned; courthouse; Roman baths; Bishop's palace; and two basilicas where its remaining mosaics are a highlight. What? No brothel? I was told that it is still buried because every Roman city had a brothel...

-- KARANOS THE FIRST KING OF MACEDON

'The western parts of the present state Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) did not belong to Roman and Byzantine Macedonia. '
(Alexandru Madgearu, Martin Gordon. The wars of the Balkan Peninsula: their medieval origins. p 176)
-- SKOPJE IN BYZANTINE TIMES
'In the medieval period Macedonia was closely linked to Bulgaria, thus bolstering the latter's historical claims to the area. Northern Macedonia was conquered by the Bulgar Khans in the ninth century, and remained within the orbit of the First Bulgarian Kingdom until 1218, when the western town of Ohrid - by that time the Bulgarian capital - finally fell to the Byzantines. Under the second Bulgarian Kingdom (1185-1396) things were confused, with the emergent power of Serbia increasingly extending its influence in the area in the 1300s. The central Macedonian town of Skopje was briefly the capital of the greatest of medieval Serbia's rulers, Tsar Dushan.'
(Jonathan Bousfield, Dan Richardson, Rough Guides, Richard Watkins. Bulgaria, p 448-449)
-- SKOPJE IN OTTOMAN TIMES
'Under Ottoman rule, Macedonia was known officially as the 'Three Provinces', with administrative centres in Thessaloniki, Skopje and Monastir (present-day Bitola in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia). At the beginning of the twentieth century, Macedonia was one of the most cosmopolitan regions of the empire, peopled by Slavs, Greeks, Turks, Albanians and Jews. '
(Jonathan Bousfield, Dan Richardson, Rough Guides, Richard Watkins. Bulgaria, p 448)
'Skopje (Shkup in Albanian and Uskub in Turkish) was the centre of the Kosovo vilayet, with Skopje, is shown as one of the 'four Albanian vilayets during the Ottoman Empire''
(Michael Waller, Kyril Drezov, Bülent Gökay. Kosovo, footnote on p69)
'The Greeks are well represented in the vilayet of Salonica. Greeks and Albanians balance Bulgarians in the vilayet of Monastir'

Museum of Macedonia Displays 9,800 Artifacts
Museum of Macedonia Displays 9,800 Artifacts Excavated at Archaeological Sites in 2009
Dec. 27, 2009. Some 10.000 artifacts of 100.000 excavated in total in 2009 during the archaeological researches on 18 locations in Macedonia, have been presented on this exhibition opened on Sunday.
The Macedonian Information Agency reported that Elizabeta Kanceska-Milevska, Minster of Culture, opened Sunday the annual exhibition of artifacts excavated at archaeological sites throughout Macedonia in 2009. Prime Minister, Nikola Gruevski, also attended the opening of the exhibition which took place at the Museum of Macedonia.
A total of 9,800 artifacts excavated at 18 archaeological sites throughout Macedonia are displayed in the Museum of Macedonia, in the framework of the third archaeology exhibition.
The display includes items from Ohrids Gorna Porta, Isar Marvinci, Stobi, Carevi Kuli, Heraklea etc.
Museum director Meri Anicin-Pejoska and director of the Cultural Heritage Protection Office Pasko Kuzman attended the exhibition opening.
Traces left by past civilisations are the only witness of our past and an inseparable part of our existence. Therefore, it gives me great pleasure to attend the third annual exhibit of most valuable artifacts excavated in 2009, said Gruevski to the Macedonian Information Agency in his welcoming speech.
The amount that was excavated this year is small. There is a lot more to be done. The Government will continue to support nation-wide excavations, because artefacts are national and cultural treasure. In 2010 we plan to continue our support in this field, stated PM Gruevski after the opening at the Museum of Macedonia.
Asked whether some of the artefacts could help in strengthening country's position in the name dispute with Greece, Gruevski said it could be the case only if the argument of facts prevailed in the name talks. Unfortunately, Greece negotiates with the argument of power, the PM stressed.
Future generations will laugh at the fact that someone today is trying to divide people into ancient and Slavic Macedonians, noted the PM when asked whether Sunday's exhibition was an attempt to resume the process of antiquisation.
Future generations will be stunned as to why someone in this period tried so hard to divide people into ancient and Slavic. It is ridiculous because both were part of past civilisations, he said adding that Macedonia was lying on a territory that was the home of many prominent or less prominent civilisations, which needed to be equally acknowledged by modern Macedonians.
