10 Of The Best British Farm Attractions
Stockley Farm Park, Cheshire.
This organic dairy and arable farm prides itself on a “hands-on” approach: visitors are encouraged to feed and groom the animals and watch planting and milking parlour demonstrations.
Odds Farm Park, Buckinghamshire.
Odds Farm Park was named attraction of the year at the 2017 National Farm Attractions Network awards.
Good Day Out, Powys.
Sheep-trekking, sheepdog herding and “pig-nics” are just a few of the unusual and educational experiences offered by Good Day Out, which raises money for local causes by offering interactive farm visits in the Brecon Beacons.
Hall Hill Farm, County Durham.
Spring is one of the busiest times of year on sheep farms. On 7 April, Hall Hill Farm will be hosting a Lambing Live Open Day, with extended opening hours (10.30am-9pm) so that visitors can see births as they happen and visit new-born lambs in the maternity barn.
Mudchute Farm, London.
Set in 32 acres on the Isle of Dogs, this inner-city farm brings a little slice of rural life to the East End. As well as the working farm, there’s a petting zoo, duck pond and equestrian centre, with an all-weather floodlit riding arena and show jumps.
Blackstone Clydesdales, Ayrshire.
This family farm offers the opportunity to get up close to working Clydesdale horses and other farm animals on specially tailored “experiences”.
Bocketts Farm Park, Surrey.
Unlike some “farm attractions” which are really just theme parks with animals, Bocketts is still very much a working sheep farm. Around 500 lambs are expected to arrive over the next month or two and lucky visitors might even get to watch one being born.
The Big Sheep, Devon.
No list of farm attractions is complete without the Big Sheep, which has transformed itself from humble livestock farm to one of Devon’s top family attractions.
Baylham House, Suffolk.
This small livestock farm specialises in breeds once common on British farms, but now under threat. Children can get really close to the animals, with opportunities to groom goats and pigs, stroke rabbits, feed chickens and hunt for new-laid eggs.
Acton Scott, Shropshire.
If Acton Scott looks familiar, it’s because it was the setting of the BBC2 show Victorian Farm.

Views of Cheshire - North Rode Vintage Fair 2009 HD
North rode vintage fair saw a collection of classic cars, military vehicles and traction engines, Some of which have taken years of restoration and endless maintenance to bring them to their former glory.
Points of interest
THE WORKHORSE of British agriculture and history.
A traction engine name derives from the Latin name: tractus, meaning drawn Since the prime function was to draw a load behind it. They where known as road locomotives to distinguish them from: steam locomotives that run on rails. Traction engines are usually large, robust yet powerful but with poor manoeuvrability. Nevertheless, they revolutionized agriculture and road haulage at the time when the only alternative prime mover was the draught horse.

The Arley Estate
Lord Ashbrook Lectures in America - In March 2012 My wife Zoe and I visited the United States with a view to my giving a lecture on Arley Hall and its gardens. The invitation to do this came from an old friend, P.Allen Smith, of Little Rock, Arkansas. Allen is a distinguished garden designer and host of television programmes in the USA.
I gave the lecture at three different locations -- First, at the Winterthur Museum, Delaware, then at the Clinton School of Public administration, part of the Clinton Library, Little Rock -- and finally at the Carriage House Restaurant, Natchez, Miississippi.
The video below was made of the lecture given at Little Rock.

Arley is a place of enormous character, charm and interest. Visitors are frequently struck by the warm and intimate atmosphere and the feeling that Arley is a much-cherished family home.
The Gardens, which are amongst the finest in Britain, are outstanding for their vitality, variety and historical interest and are particularly celebrated for the magnificent double herbaceous border. The Hall is an impressive example of a Victorian country house built in the Elizabethan style.
The Gardens
During our open season we will tell you on a regular basis what is looking good in the gardens and what particular plants to look out for.

Amongst the finest in Britain and Europe the gardens have been created over the last 250 years by successive generations of the same family and thus offer an unusual blend of long history and traditional design with inspired modern ideas and additions. The result is a garden rich in atmosphere, interest and vitality -- a wonderful example of the idea that the best gardens are living, changing works of art.
The garden's best known feature is its Herbaceous Border which was probably the first border of its kind planted in England, this along with the unique Quercus Ilex Columns, Pleached Lime Avenue of trees and the furlong walk make this simply the most amazing and interesting garden.
Within its eight acres of formal gardens, which can take you several hours to meander around, there are many different areas, each with its own distinctive character, on the NE side of the house, beyond the Chapel is The Grove, a well established arboretum and a Woodland Walk of about 6 or 7 acre. The Grove has a pathway approx 1/3rd of a mile long and it will take you approx 30 minutes to walk around depending on your pace and interest in the planting, while the Woodland Walk is approx 1/5th of a mile long and will take you approx 15 minutes to walk, once again depending on your pace.
At Arley you will see a huge range of different plants of all kinds, making it a treasure trove both for the keen plantsman and for the less specialised visitor. Both The Grove and Woodland walk are not suitable for wheelchair access during wet periods, however The Gardens have good disabled access, no matter what the weather, please be aware though that the pathways throughout the Gardens are all either grass and gravel .
These magnificent gardens are maintained by a fantastic team of gardeners led by Head Gardener Gordon Baillee. We are extremely lucky to have a number of excellent volunteer gardeners; however the award winning team consists of: Dave Groom, Doug Rustage, James Youd and Mark Ormerod-Jordan.
We were particularly proud that Arley was selected as one of the Gardens of Distinction for Cheshire's Year of the Gardens scheme in 2008. This was an exciting new initative intended to celebrate the heritage of gardens and the green environment in the county of Cheshire. TV and celebrity gardener Chris Beardshaw said Lord Ashbrook and his family have been committed to this garden for generations and it has made Arley truly unique.

Plant Nursery
For those visitors spellbound by the Gardens, Arley Hall Nursery gives you the opportunity to take some of the magic of Arley home with you. Viscount Ashbrook's sister, Jane Foster, owns and manages the Nursery which works very closely with the Gardens, propagating many of its plants from those growing in the Gardens. The Nursery's particular speciality is in herbaceous perennials and pelargoniums and a very wide selection of both is available here, almost all grown entirely on site.
The aim is to be able to supply any plant which a visitor has seen and particularly admired in the garden. Due to limited space it is not possible to grow large numbers of shrubs, so the Nursery concentrates on those which are more unusual and difficult to obtain or those that are particularly striking in the gardens. A border at the back of the enclosed Nursery, which is situated next to the main Car Park, displays many of the plants on sale.
