Eleanor Tomlinson poses as Steve McQueen in art project
Eleanor Tomlinson posed as Steve McQueen in the iconic WWII film The Great Escape as part of an art project which saw 10 British actors portrayed in their dream role.Visual artist Joe Simpson created the paintings as part of his ACT exhibition which opens at War Memorial Art Gallery in Stockport, Greater Manchester, later this month. The ten pieces captured the sitters in roles that they wish they had played including that of Eleanor Tomlinson, best known as Poldark's Demelza, as Steve McQueen's wartime hero Virgil Hilts. These included Olivia Colman as Bess in Breaking the Waves, Matt Lucas as Don Lockwood in Singin' In The Rain and Warwick Davis as Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe.Michael Sheen said that he had already played all of his dream roles and so instead opted to be painted as Max from children's book Where The Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak's.Other sitters included Paddy Considine, Charlie Cox, Mark Gatiss, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, John Simm and Eleanor Tomlinson. The project took Mr Simpson five years to complete. He said that the hardest part was persuading the celebrities to agree to take part in the first place. His first sitter was Paddy Considine, known for his roles in Hot Fuzz and The Suspicions of Mr Whicher, who was a friend of a friend. Mr Simpson contacted the others through their agents or via social media and managed to gain traction for the project. The next steps were to discuss the character and their depiction with the actor before photographing them with props and costumes. He originally added the backdrops using Photoshop on a computer before taking them into the studio to paint them in oil on canvas. Speaking about the result, Mr Simpson said that they were 'like a film still from a film that doesn't exist'.'These are the most researched pieces I've worked on, where I study each role and create a scene from scratch – which includes making costumes, referencing cinematography, genre conventions and character profiles and visiting authentic locations - all to build a single frame story,' according to The Telegraph. He said that the project also deepened his knowledge of film as he set about reaching each of the films repeatedly to get a sense of the portrait. Mr Simpson has already been in discussions with a new group of famous faces who he hopes to feature in the future including Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Dame Judi Dench. The show opens at the War Memorial Art Gallery in Stockport on January 25.It will then travel to the Theatre Clwyd, North Wales, and the Alfred East Art Gallery, Kettering. Places to see in ( Manchester - UK )
Manchester is a major city in the northwest of England with a rich industrial heritage. The Castlefield conservation area’s 18th-century canal system recalls the city’s days as a textile powerhouse, and visitors can trace this history at the interactive Museum of Science & Industry. The revitalised Salford Quays dockyards now house the Daniel Libeskind-designed Imperial War Museum North and the Lowry cultural centre.
Manchester is fringed by the Cheshire Plain to the south, the Pennines to the north and east and an arc of towns with which it forms a continuous conurbation. The local authority is Manchester City Council. The recorded history of Manchester began with the civilian settlement associated with the Roman fort of Mamucium or Mancunium
Manchester achieved city status in 1853. The Manchester Ship Canal opened in 1894, creating the Port of Manchester and linking the city to sea, 36 miles (58 km) to the west. Manchester fortunes declined after the Second World War, owing to deindustrialisation, but the IRA bombing in 1996 led to extensive investment and regeneration.
In 2014, the Globalization and World Cities Research Network ranked Manchester as a beta world city, the highest-ranked British city apart from London. Manchester is the third-most visited city in the UK. Manchester is notable for its architecture, culture, musical exports, media links, scientific and engineering output, social impact, sports clubs and transport connections. Manchester Liverpool Road railway station was the world's first inter-city passenger railway station and in the city scientists first split the atom and developed the stored-program computer.
Manchester is well known for being a city of sport. Two Premier League football clubs bear the city name – Manchester United and Manchester City. Manchester United play its home games at Old Trafford, in the neighbouring Greater Manchester borough of Trafford, the largest club football ground in the United Kingdom. Manchester City's home ground is the City of Manchester Stadium (also known as the Etihad Stadium for sponsorship purposes); its former ground, Maine Road was demolished in 2003.

????Laurence Stephen Lowry RBA RA (1 November 188 L.S.Lowry Salford Artist 7 – 23 February 1976) was an English artist. Many of l.s.lowry Salford drawings and paintings depict Pendlebury Lancashire, where he lived and worked for more than 40 years, and also Salford and its surrounding areas. Laurence Stephen Lowry Paintings.
L.S.Lowry Salford is famous for painting scenes of life in the industrial districts of North West England in the mid-20th century. L.S.Lowry Salford developed a distinctive style of painting and is best known for his urban landscapes peopled with human figures often referred to as matchstick men.L.S.Lowry Salford painted mysterious unpopulated landscapes, brooding portraits and the unpublished marionette works, which were only found after L.S.Lowry Manchester death.L.S Lowry Art. Lowry Art.
Due to L.S.Lowry Salford use of stylised figures and the lack of weather effects in many of his landscapes L.S.Lowry Salford is sometimes characterised as a naïve Sunday painter, although this is not the view of the galleries that have organised retrospectives of L.S.Lowry Manchester works.
A large collection of L.S.Lowry Salford work is on permanent public display in The Lowry Salford Quays , a purpose-built L.S.Lowry art gallery on Salford Quays named in his honour. Lowry rejected five honours during his life, including a knighthood in 1968, and consequently holds the record for the most rejected British honours. On 26 June 2013 a major retrospective opened at the Tate Britain London, his first at the Tate, and in 2014 his first solo exhibition outside the UK was held in Nanjing, China. L.S.Lowry Salford Art Gallery, formerly Manchester City Art Gallery, is a publicly owned art museum on Mosley Street in Manchester city centre. Manchester Art Gallery premises were built for a learned society in 1823 and today its collection occupies three connected buildings, two of which were designed by Sir Charles Barry. Both Barry's buildings are listed. The building that links them was designed by Hopkins Architects following an architectural design competition managed by RIBA Competitions. It opened in 2002 following a major renovation and expansion project undertaken by the Manchester Art Gallery.Manchester Art Gallery, formerly Manchester City Art Gallery, is a publicly owned art museum on Mosley Street in Manchester city centre. Bristol Beaufighter at Air Force Museum
This British Beaufighter is on display at the National Museum of the United States Air Force at Dayton, Ohio. According to the display's description, The British Beaufighter filled the need for an effective night fighter in the US Army Air Forces until an American aircraft could be produced. The Beaufighter had first entered operational service with the Royal Air Force in July 1940 as a day fighter. Equipped with a very early Mk IV airborne intercept radar, the powerful and heavily armed night fighter version entered service just as the Luftwaffe began its Blitz night attacks against London in September 1940. Beaufighter crews accounted for over half of the Luftwaffe bombers shot down during the Blitz. When the USAAF formed its first radar-equipped night fighter squadron in January 1943, the only American night fighter available was the makeshift Douglas P-70, a modified A-20 bomber using the US version of the Mk IV radar... The Museum's aircraft was built under license by the Fairey Aviation Company in Stockport, England and delivered to the Royal Australian Air Force in 1942. It is marked as the USAAF Beaufighter flown by Capt Harold Augspurger, the commander of the 415th Night Fighter Squadron who shot down a He 111 carrying German staff officers in September 1944...

Launceston's air raid shelters - City of Launceston
Did you know that during WWII the City of Launceston oversaw the construction of more than a dozen air raid shelters across the CBD?
The reinforced concrete pillbox structures were designed to protect residents during air raids, with the first one built in Civic Square.
Other locations included the Kingsway and Yorktown Square.
Wartime also saw the digging of slit trenches in parks, playgrounds and schools across the municipality; another place to shelter during an air raid.
