STOKES & FITZGERALD NP - LOW COST CAMPING - Ep 79 - Roadtrip Australia
Well happy with our little side trek, we replenished our fridge and pantry in Esperance & topped up the water tanks, before heading out to Quagi Beach.
Quagi beach was another low cost campsite at $15 per night. We chose to stay here, as we wanted to nip into Stokes National Park for a look. Kurts last name is Stokes and hence why he wanted to see HIS national park. We ducked off in the afternoon and headed in to the park. Note: we did have to deflate our tires, as the road was heavily corrugated. In under 30 minutes we were at the Moir Homestead ruins. Lots of ruins about to see and we loved the paths which helped guide you to the different spots. Without the paths, we would of missed half of the structures and points of interest.

Seeing the sign for ‘Fanny Cove’ had us in giggles. So of course we had to go see Fanny Cove in the National Park. A nice calm bay, which looked like it would be good snorkeling and swimming. The campground had 4 sites, which were empty, but plenty of space to bring a caravan in - if you wished. From here, we nipped out to the ‘Shoal Cape’, another great bay which looked like it would be great for spearfishing. A big rock shelf too, for keen fishermen. Well Kurt was happy with his mini tour, we headed back to the van to relax.
The next day, we headed to Starvation Bay. WOW! We loved this spot. We got ourselves a nice cosy site, only 20m walk to the beach. The bay was protected and calm, and had plenty of spots to explore around here on foot. We stayed 3 nights, relaxing and soaking up the sun. Again, another $15 per night campsite but we were more than happy with this spot.
We moved down to Hopetoun next. The town has a free RV friendly designated campsite for self contained campers. We unhitched the van and had a little walk around town and along the beach. Rusty was pretty tired and in need of her afternoon nap, so while she was napping we ducked into Fitzgerald Nation Park [on the eastern side].
Fitzgerald Nation Park
Again, only a short 15 minute drive and we were in the National Park area. We had a look at four mile beach, barrens beach, cave beach, west beach and eventually turning around at Hamersley Inlet. The inlet water level was that low, there were multiply dead fish along the shore, which was sad to see. Anyways, we left there and on the way out of the NP, we threw on our runners and climbed East Mount Barren. A short class 4 walk to the summit, but a good bit of afternoon fitness and spectacular views up top.
Next stop Hyden!

Esperance & Fitzgerald River National Park - Our first look into WA - E33
Welcome back to another episode guys! This week we roll into Westerrn Australia, set up camp and finally have the chance to have a fire!
The next item on our travelling list is the longest straight stretch of road in the world, also known as the 90 mile. This part of the nullarbor is pretty boring and we get excited when we see a bend in the road
We then bump into Cam from Wild Touring. If you want to subscribe to his channel here is the link. He is also on facebook so get around it!
We then encounter some pretty bad weather in Esperance so continue to make our way on towards Fitzgerald River National Park, where the weather isn't any better but at least it gives us the chance to get some moody content

ESPERANCE - FREE CAMPING LIKE NO OTHER - Ep.78 - Roadtrip Australia
Well, after a long awaited 2 years we finally made it into Esperance! We had decided to splurge and book ourselves into a van park for a week so we could really get a feel for the area and simply relax. Our van park of choice was the ‘Esperance Bay Holiday Park’ - they had a great deal on during our stay which was pay 6, stay 7.
We explored all the beaches along the Great Ocean drive, which was fantastic. Clear blue waters and we liked the fact that each beach was uniquely different to the previous one. With calm bays, surf beaches, rocky beaches, beaches with gully’s / rock-pools etc. Rusty loved the fact she was allowed on 9/10 of those beaches too! We fished, we sun baked, we explored and generally had a great week at Esperance!
The weather wasn’t the best with only about 50% of our stay, we had the sun out, but we were very lucky to have a couple of gorgeous days to really see the true Esperance beauty.
Cape Le Grand National Park
We waited for a nice sunny day to visit Cape Le Grand, day tripping in from Esperance. Having our annual national parks pass, meant we were waved right through the pay station which was great. We headed straight to Lucky bay in search of those popular kangaroos on the beach. We saw 2 not far down the beach, but they were surrounded by lots of tourists. We decided we would come back here last, before we headed out to try and find some more Kangaroos.
We drove around checking out all the bays and beaches. It was quite windy, so it didn’t make too many of the beaches, that inviting for a swim. BUT we had sunshine, so we weren’t complaining. Cape Le Grand beach was nice and easy to drive onto. Driving a few kilometers up and back along the beach, listening to the squeaky white sand under the tires.
We conquered the small steep hike up to Frenchman’s peak. It was really leg burning getting to the summit. Be sure to climb in and visit the mammoth cave up there. It was HUGE. We then trekked up another few minutes to reach the actual summit. It was very windy up top, so we had to clutch our hats so they didn’t fly off. All up, it took us about 50 minutes with a 10 minute rest up the top.
Before leaving Cape Le Grand, we ducked up the road and back to Lucky bay in the hope of scoring that iconic kangaroo shot! We had both agreed we would drive onto the beach (now the tide was going out) and try to find one. Well it didn’t take long, only 30 seconds on the sand we spotted some. We whipped out our camera’s and got the million dollar shot. In all seriousness, they are cute and very friendly, but please remember they are wild and DO NOT feed them (like we spotted a few people doing).
All up, we loved Cape Le Grand and hope to revisit it the future and explore a little more.

Destination WA - Fitzgerald River National Park
There’s nothing quite like a drive and there’s nowhere quite like Australia’s Golden Outback when it comes to exploring WA on wide open road. We’ve been headed south after discovering Dumbleyung and its lake and Yabbies and we are headed to Esperance via the stunning coastal township of Hopetoun with a visit to one of my favourite natural places on the planet. If you’ve never visited the Fitzgerald national Park you really should.
