The Land of Ice | Day 3 & 4 in Iceland - Glaciers, Jokulsarlon, & Vatnajökull National Park
Our third day on our trip around Iceland brought us to some amazing rock climbing and hiking around an incredible Icelandic glacier. We got to climb up a mountain running right along side the glacier for hours. Things got a little challenging in situations and the person I was traveling with almost took a fall down into the glacier water at the bottom. After doing some climbing and driving on some incredibly rough dirt roads with some insane potholes, we made our way to Jokulsarlon a glacier lake with huge icebergs floating around in it. We got to take in the amazing views and see something we have never seen before. After an awesome day of adventuring we made our way to our delightful guesthouse in Hofn and went to check out Stokksnes right down the road which we found to be a little disappointing in the freezing wind and fog. After going and getting some lobster alfredo we went to a grocery store to pick up some Icelandic snacks and went to bed. The next morning we woke up to a foggy, cold, rainy day, but still headed out to Vatnajökull National Park where we went down yet another dirt road which brought us to a really cool canyon and waterfall. We were the only one's within 20 miles of where we were and it was a truly amazing place to see. We decided to climb up the mountain the waterfall was coming off of into a cloud. Once on top we could barely see anything at all and could only see the incredible view when the clouds cleared for a couple seconds. We made our way back down, soaked and shivering and before getting to our car and walking through a field of floodplains from the stream nearby we saw a heard of reindeer run by. We made our way to our next hotel, the Foss Hotel in Kalfafell and turned in early. Only leaving to go for dinner at the same place we ate at two days prior and to get snacks at the grocery store.
Winter '16 // Iceland PART 3: Finding Stokksness
Vatnajokull National Park is home to Iceland's biggest glacier, forming glaciers caves in the process.
Most glacier caves are started by water running through or under the glacier. This water often originates on the glacier’s surface through melting, entering the ice at a moulin and exiting at the glacier’s snout at base level.
With some advice from our guide, we managed to find a perfect spot to catch the aurora borealis for the night - Stokksness. Just about a 15 minutes drive from our Hofn Hostel.

Hof, in Öræfi, is a cluster of farms in the municipality of Sveitarfélagið Hornafjörður in southeast Iceland, close to Vatnajökull glacier, and twenty two kilometres south of Skaftafell in Vatnajökull National Park. It is located on the Route 1 southwest of Höfn, in the narrow strip between the sea coast and the glacier.
A notаble building in Hof is a turf church, which was built in 1883 and is the youngest turf church in Iceland. Since 1951, it belongs to the National Museum of Iceland.

Iceland : East fjords, funny icelandic horses, Hofn

Icelandic East fjords propose you mesmerising mix of mountains, fjords, waterfalls and wildlife, the East Fjords are scattered with idyllic fishing villages, while routes north and south connect you easily to Icelandic icons like the glacial lagoon and Myvatn's volcanic wonders. Perfect for 'slow travel', the East Fjords offer an authentic Icelandic experience, a chance to meet the locals and discover a less-visited side of the country.
During the road trip we also met Icelandic horses that made us laugh. The Icelandic horse is a breed of horse developed in Iceland. Although the horses are small, at times pony-sized, most registries for the Icelandic refer to it as a horse. Icelandic horses are long-lived and hardy.
The trip ends in Hofn, blooming city close to the biggest glacier in Europe, Vatnajökull in the south eastern part of Iceland.n this region you are located at the base of Vatnajökull, and the scenery is breathtaking. Vatnajökull National Park, the largest national park in Europe, is situated in the community. In the last few decades tourism has grown enormously and has, in fact, become a major economic sector in the community. Höfn's growth in the 20th century from a small village to today's town was a result of the development of a relatively diverse fishing industry. The landed catch is now more varied than in other fishing towns, including high-value species such as the Norway lobster (Nephrops norvegicus), but a good part of the Icelandic lobster catch is landed at Höfn.

Glacier Lagoon) is a large glacial lagoon in southeast Iceland, on the borders of Vatnajökull National Park. Situated at the head of Breiðamerkurjökull, it evolved into a lagoon after the glacier started receding from the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. The lake has grown since then at varying rates because of melting of the Icelandic glaciers. The lagoon now stands 1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) away from the ocean's edge and covers an area of about 18 km2 (6.9 sq mi). It recently became the deepest lake in Iceland at over 248 metres (814 ft) depth as glacial retreat extended its boundaries. The size of the lagoon has increased fourfold since the 1970s. It is considered as one of the natural wonders of Iceland.
