The Zagoria (Ζαγόρι), a short form of Zagorohoria - the villages behind the mountains - includes an area of 46 villages north of Ioannina. Typically, the houses are built with stones of this area.
The rough terrain of the Zagoria was a popular area of retreat for partisans in the Greek War of Independence and during the occupation.
Above Monodendri is an impressive stone forest, which was made accessible by a new road.
The herds of goats look picturesque, but the shepherds do not always have empathy with their animals.
Beginning of the 19th Century, the Ottomans built eight stone arched bridges in the Zagoria. The most impressive - tou Plakida, with three stone arches is located just outside the village of Kipi below the road to Ioannina.

Die Zagoria (Ζαγόρι), eine Kurzform von Zagorochória -- die Dörfer hinter den Bergen -, umfasst ein Gebiet mit 46 Dörfern nördlich von Ioannina. Typischerweise werden die Häuser mit Steinen der Umgebung erbaut.
Im Unabhängigkeitskrieg und während der Besatzungszeit war die unübersichtliche Zagoria ein beliebtes Rückzugsgebiet für Partisanen.
Oberhalb von Monodendri befindet sich ein eindrucksvoller Steinwald, der erst kürzlich durch eine neue Straße erschlossen wurde.
Die Ziegenherden sehen malerisch aus, doch die Hirten gehen nicht immer sehr einfühlsam mit ihren Tieren um.
Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts bauten die Osmanen acht geschwungene Steinbrücken in der Zagoria. Die beeindruckendste - tou Plakida -bestehend aus drei Bögen befindet sich kurz vor dem Dorf Kipi unterhalb der Straße nach Ioannina.

Vikos - Aoos National Park in northwestern Greece, was founded in 1973. It is named after the two main gorges in the area and covers 12,600 hectares of mountainous terrain, with numerous rivers, lakes, caves, deep canyons and dense coniferous and deciduous forests.

The centerpiece is the spectacular Vikos Gorge with a depth of 1000 meters / 3280 feet, one of the largest and finest gorges in the world, carved by the Voidomatis River. Aoos gorge, mount Tymfi with its highest peak Gamila (2,497m / 8192 ft) and a number of traditionally preserved settlements, form the park's peripheral zone. The rich variety of fauna and flora, natural habitats and ecosystems rank it among the most valuable parks for nature conservation in Greece.

We visited Vikos Canyon and the beautiful Zagorochoria at Epirus, Greece

This time our destination is Vikos Gorge & Zagorochoria villages in Epirus at Pindus Mountains. I think it's one of the most beautiful destinations in the world & combines many activities such as mountaineering, trekking, rafting, canyoning. Also there are many paths in the forest from one village to another. The villages are gorgeous and when I'm there my mood is transformed. We enjoyed the gorge of Vikos, which is the deepest gorge in the world. We followed the path from Monodendri village to the monastery of Agia Paraskevi and then we carefully took the path through the gorge. We ended up staying in Mikro Papigo village at Pinocchio Hostel, which I highly recommend to those who want to visit it.

Agios Germanos is a village in Macedonia, built on a hillside of the Varnoundas Mountain. It is 45 km from Florina and 7 km from the Prespes Lakes. The village is known for bird watching and hiking along the Stara River reaching the waterfalls, the fir and beech forest and the springs. The village has maintained traditional architecture with old stone houses.

As I reach Greece and see the layercakes of Stone Forest near Monodendri I am amazed about what nature can create - then I get to see the biggest canyon in the world...

This is a series of videos I've made about my bicycle vacation in the spring of 2013, I traveled through Macedonia, Albania and Greece.
