The Old Stone Fort in Nacogdoches Texas
The Old Stone Fort is the oldest building in Texas. Nacogdoches was once the entryway to Texas during Spanish and Mexican times. Virtually everyone passed by the Old Stone Fort which was once on the El Camino Real (The king's highway). The road connected virtually every settlement in Texas, including San Antonio and the Alamo. San Antonio is one side of Texas history. Nacogdoches is the other side of the same story.

Ghost Trail Movie 28
The Old Stone Fort was built as the original house and trading post of Antonio Gil Y'Barbo, the founder of modern Nacogdoches. The building is the only remaining structure in Nacogdoches from Spanish era. Made of native red iron rock, the walls are almost three feet thick. Nine flags have flown over the old building. These were the flags of France (1685); Spain (1716); the Magee-Gutierrez expedition (1813); Dr. Long's expedition (1819); Mexico (1821); Fredonia Republic (1826); Republic of Texas (1836); The United States of America (1845); and the Confederate States of America (1861). It was the headquarters of governments and rebellions. At different times the Stone Fort has served as Y' Barbo's home, salon, fort, national capital, trading post, prison, gambling hall and warehouse. Texas' fist newspaper, Gazetta de Tejas, was published here. Within these walls Texas greats like Thomas J. Rusk, Sam Houston, Davy Crockett, and Jim Bowie stood to take the oath of allegiance to Mexico. Within these walls the first district court of Texas was convened under the gavel of Judge Three-Legged Willie Williamson, whose gun was his third leg. Originally built on the location of present day Commercial National Bank downtown, the Old Stone Fort was torn down in 1902 and reconstructed on this site in 1936 as part of the city's bicentennial project.
