The stone forest (Shilin - Yunnan - China)
(EN) The Stone Forest or Shilin (Chinese: 石林; pinyin: Shílín) is a notable set of karst formations located in Shilin Yi Autonomous County, Yunnan Province, People's Republic of China, approximately 120 kilometres (75 mi) from the provincial capital Kunming. The tall rocks seem to emanate from the ground in the manner of stalagmites, with many looking like petrified trees thereby creating the illusion of a forest made of stone. Since 2007, two parts of the site, the Naigu Stone Forest (乃古石林) and Suogeyi Village (所各邑村), have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites as part of the South China Karst. (wikipedia)

Farmers Plant Trees on Cliffs in China's Chongqing
A group of farmers in southwest China's Sichuan Province have succeeded in planting trees on the sheer rock face of precipices to protect the land in between from being desertified.
Led by Lin Yunyi, 60, the 20-member group of farmers each carrying sampling and earth to shuttle among 60-gradient precipices, with the narrowest part being the size of a palm.
They had to plant all the tree saplings before the winter solstice.
The higher they climbed, the more stones cropping up and they may fall at any time. Wearing only safety helmets, without any other protective equipment, they used grass or bigger trees as grips.
It usually takes them 1.5 hours to get only halfway up the hill.
Deputy head of the forest farm Chen Hui explained the reason why they had to plant trees on such dangerous cliffs.
The dust from burning coal and alkali from a boiling salt combine into a compound. When the compound flows in the air and falls on the rocks, trees can no longer grow in the area covered by such compound, said Chen.
The hills where Lin and his team are planting trees are located near the Ningchang Village, which used to specialize in distilling salt for more than 4,000 years. The local people cut all the trees for the salt business in the 1960s to 1970s.
Although it is 20 years since the salt factory stopped production, landslides always take place due to desertification and salinization of the hilly land.
Since 2014, the local government prioritized the control of desertification.
Lin would get disappointed when he found that the saplings failed to survive due to the fragile ecological environment on the hills.
Lin’s hometown is 80 kilometers away from the mountainous area where he is planting trees.
Lin said his hometown used to be desertified due to severe soil erosion. But now it has become green and suitable for farming thanks to the local residents’ efforts.
Lin said he had planted at least 800 to 900 trees in his hometown.
Lin said planting trees means wealth for the future generations.
I plant trees like bringing up children. I’ve already developed a passion for them. Our future generations will benefit from the trees we've planted. The trees bring wealth for them, said Lin.

Vivienne Shue, Elvera Kwang Siam Lim Memorial Lecture 2016
Speaker: Vivienne Shue, Professor Emeritus of Contemporary China Studies, Associate of the University of Oxford China Centre, and Emeritus Fellow of St. Antony's College, University of Oxford
Discussant: Kevin O'Brien, Director, Institute of East Asian Studies; Professor, Political Science Department, UC Berkeley
The lecture develops three broad themes: a) How Chinese state leaders now pursue a comprehensive national spatial re-ordering through an ambitious land-use mapping regime applied over the entirety of their nation-space; b) How such a spectacular mapping exercise can be interpreted with reference equally to political leadership practices present in primitive human communities and to contemporary global ideals of ‘best practice’ managerialism; and c) How the multiplex governance processes and mixed assemblages of intersecting power practices recent research reveals in China can help us transcend tired conceptual dichotomies and develop more fluid, dynamic models of political change and evolution.

Ted Slingerland: Trying Not to Try | Talks at Google
This is the third in a series of Talks at Google by current and former fellows of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (CASBS) at Stanford University. Previous CASBS speakers appearing in the Talks at Google program include Rose McDermott and Eric Klinenberg. Learn more about CASBS at and follow @CASBSStanford.
Edward Slingerland was a 2015-16 CASBS fellow. He is professor of Asian studies and Canada Research Chair in Chinese Thought and Embodied Cognition at the University of British Columbia (UBC), where he also holds adjunct appointments in philosophy and psychology. In February 2017 he was named a UBC Distinguished University Scholar, recognizing distinction in research, teaching, and learning.
Slingerland’s talk is on “Creativity, Trust and the Paradox of Spontaneity,” which draws significantly from his 2014 book Trying not to Try: Ancient China, Modern Science and the Power of Spontaneity. It was named by The Guardian as a Best Book of 2014 and chosen by Brain Pickings as Best Book on Psychology/Philosophy for that year. His other books include Effortless Action: Wu-wei as Conceptual Metaphor and Spiritual Ideal in Early China (2003), What Science Offers the Humanities: Integrating Body & Culture (2008), and the co-edited volume Creating Consilience: Integrating the Sciences and the Humanities (2011).
With the paradox of wu-wei, Chinese thinkers anticipated aspects of modern neuroscience more than two millennia ago. Slingerland discusses wu-wei’s contemporary relevance to creativity, trust, virtue, and the future of human cooperation. Watch as he walks you through his fascinating, ambitious research about body & mind, science & instinct, and how historical knowledge can benefit our present and future in very practical ways.

George S. Yip: China's Next Strategic Advantage: From Imitation to Innovation | Talks at Google
A book for everyone who does business with China or in China.
The history-making development of the Chinese economy has entered a new phase. China is moving aggressively from a strategy of imitation to one of innovation. Driven both by domestic needs and by global ambition, China is establishing itself at the forefront of technological innovation. Western businesses need to prepare for a tidal wave of innovation from China that is about to hit Western markets, and Chinese businesses need to understand the critical importance of innovation in their future.
Experts George Yip and Bruce McKern explain this epic transformation and propose strategies for both Western and Chinese companies. This book is for everyone who does business with China or in China, or is interested in the development of the world's fastest-growing economy. Western CEOs can learn from Chinese companies and can create an effective innovation process in China, for China and the world. Chinese CEOs can benefit from understanding the strategies of their peers as they strive to enter foreign markets. And all Western businesses should prepare for disruption from their new competitors.
Yip and McKern provide case studies of successful firms, outline ten ways in which the managerial and innovative capabilities of these firms differ from those of Western firms, and describe how multinationals doing business in China can become part of the Chinese ecosystem of new knowledge and technology. Yip and McKern argue that these innovation capabilities will be the basis for creating world-class products and services to meet the challenges of a new era of global competition.'
