Contemporary Japanese Lacquer Sculpture at Morikami l Art Loft 712 Segment
We visit the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens in Delray Beach as they present Hard Bodies: Contemporary Japanese Lacquer Sculpture. Since the Neolithic era, artisans have made cups and other functional items from the lacquer tree. But since the late 80’s this tradition has been challenged as contemporary lacquer artists push the medium into new directions, both innovative and exploitive of lacquer’s natural virtues.

Rachel Kneebone: Regarding Rodin
Rachel Kneebone: Regarding Rodin features fifteen iconic works by nineteenth-century French master Auguste Rodin, selected from the Museum's collection by British artist Rachel Kneebone and shown alongside eight of her own large-scale porcelain sculptures. The exhibition, Kneebone's first major museum presentation, will highlight the artists' shared interest in the representation of mourning, ecstasy, death, and vitality in figurative sculpture. The pairing also offers a visual comparison of the two sculptors' materials and processes.

Debuting in 1970 in the midst of Japan’s folk music boom, Kagawa has released more than a dozen albums over the last four-and-a-half decades, incorporating elements of folk, rock, country, and even gospel into an ongoing musical commentary that grapples with topics ranging from war to geopolitics to the natures of music and love. Ryo Kagawa has inspired some of the biggest-selling names in contemporary Japanese music. His performance here at the University of Chicago is his first-ever North American performance.
