ATLANTA STAYCATION | STONE MOUNTAIN PARK | PART 3 LASER SHOW
During our Atlanta staycation, we visited Stone Mountain Park. Part 3 we saw the laser show at Stone Mountain Park. After hiking the mountain on the walk-up trail and visiting Confederate Hall Historical & Environmental Education Center, we went to the Children's Playground, 100-year-old bridge, grist mill and Carillon. After a crazy expensive dinner at the Marketplace, we saw the amazing laser show. Dan and I saw it often as kids and this is the first time we took all the kids. It was great to see some parts of the laser show we remember from childhood. They also introduced a lot of new elements. We especially liked the flames and recognition of armed forces. If you get the chance, you should go see the laser show at Stone Mountain Park.

I-Team: Once Paralyzed, Former DeKalb Paramedic Conquers Stone Mountain on 9/11/19
By Randy Travis, FOX 5 I-Team
Aired Sep 12 2019
STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. (FOX 5 Atlanta) - A former DeKalb County paramedic had one goal on September 11, 2019: climb Stone Mountain.
That would be a tough assignment for many. But consider just five years ago, Willie Myers became a paraplegic.
Myers was on assignment as a civilian contractor protecting high profile executives overseas. People like Secretarys of State Condoleezza Rice and John Kerry. But in 2014, a fitness swim off the coast of Israel turned tragic when a riptide slammed him to the bottom. Willie suffered a C-4 bruise, leaving him paralyzed from the neck down.
But even worse, his insurance company refused to cover the accident, arguing it was outside any Zone of Special Danger.
Willie would join hundreds of other civilian contractors who had to sue for coverage, some even testifying before Congress. His insurance company eventually settled with him.
A FOX 5 I-Team investigation into Myers' situation caught the attention of the Shadow Warriors Project, a foundation created by a group of former military civilian contractors. They agreed to fund Willie's rehab.
Willie's motivation would suddenly become turbo-charged.
He set himself specific goals. In 2017, Willie's mission was to be able stand up at his daughter's high school graduation. Check. Last year? Walk unassisted. Check. This year? Climb the one-mile trail to the top of Stone Mountain.
There's a lot of people who are going through challenges, he said as he prepared to summit the mountain. And they give up on themselves. So I'm hoping that if anything... if they can see me do this... then maybe they won't be so quick to give up on themselves.
He was joined by two dozen friends and supporters, including a contingent of DeKalb County firefighters in full gear.
Never go through life succeeding or accomplishing anything alone, explained Myers as he walked up the trail with two firefighters helping to keep his balance. So you might as well bring the people who have meant the most to you with you.
Temperatures soared past 90 as Myers carefully made his way up the rocky path. The last time he was here was September 11, 2004, to honor those who lost their lives just three years earlier.
Now 54, on this September 11 Willie would retrace those steps. Slowly. Gingerly. But always moving forward.
It took him two hours and 10 minutes. And then...
Check.
This was a goal I set to do because there's people I'm honoring, he said as he sat in the shade of the summit's snack bar surrounding by sweaty but beaming supporters. People I'm remembering. But on the other side of it, I'm helping a whole lot of people who just saw me do this. And that's what it's about.

Transcript
We just arrived here at MegaPath’s Climbing for Kids. Mt. Bierstadt at 14,060 feet. I’m feeling every foot of it right now.
A whole bunch of us just hike up here to support our behavioral health programs at Children’s Hospital as well as our Kempe Center, which is part of our University Department of Pediatrics.
A gorgeous day out here and we have some terrific sponsors obviously that we want to thank including MegaPath of course, MegaPath, Party City, Polycom, Edgewater, the folks at Wyncoop Brewery. Thanks to so many of the other sponsors that make this possible.
The money is going to this year the cardiology department at children’s as well as the NFC department that deals with autism spectrum disorder and then of course Kempe that deals with child abuse. And we are just honored to be able to raise some great funds for those causes.
This is my first fourteener – I’ve lived here for 21 years and never been to the top of one of these. This is very special for me.
It’s great to be at the top. It’s a sense of accomplishment. We have a lot of first-time climbers, kids, dogs, and everybody’s having a great time. It’s something I think is real Colorado. We’ve been blessed. This is our 8th one.
Why do we do this? Frankly we do it because there’s a lot of kids that can’t. It’s a great way to give back to the community. It’s a great day out. And it’s absolutely one of the best views that you’re ever going to see.
Climbing For Kids!
So today was the first time I climbed a fourteener. You know, it was really exciting. There were all these people at the top of the mountain. So when I got up there I almost wanted to turn back, but I thought No if I can climb this mountain, I know that a lot of these other children that we are supporting they are doing much harder things. So it was really great, it felt great, and it was so great to see all different ages, men, women, corporate, dogs. It was just fantastic to see that camaraderie. That’s really important for us as an organization. To be able to see everyone doing that and coming together and it feels good for us to know that they know they are making a difference because truly without everyone we can’t do the work that we do at Kempe Center to help kids that are being abused and neglected. We just can’t help them the way we can with all of this support. So it’s just a great event. A great day.

Rescued Climber Talks About Fall that Broke Her Back
I feel lucky to be alive more than anything else. Brittany Decker, 23, of Kennesaw, Georgia was carried away from T-Wall, a popular rock climbing spot in Whitwell on February 22nd. I very narrowly avoided paralyzation said Brittany. I spoke with her Monday at Erlanger hospital, where she's been for last week after her fall of about 40 feet. I was kind of sketched out about it from the beginning, said Brittay. She calls herself an experienced climber. The Kennesaw State senior frequents Marion County to climb. She's also traveled to China for rock climbing as well, but wet conditions and soft rock made her climb at T-wall live up to its name. The corner that I fell off of is a 5-9 called it ain't so easy, said Brittany, laughing about the irony of the name. Its hard to tell because of her positive attitude, but Brittany shattered a vertebrate in her spine, fractured her skull and bruised several other bones. It's pretty incredible that she's even alive, let alone walking just a few days later, said Lisa Decker, Brittany's mother. Lisa had just arrived in Mexico for a vacation 6 hours prior to her daughter's accident. We had limited email, limited phone, limited internet, so it was really frustrating, said Lisa. After several days, Lisa was able to get back to the US to be by her daughters side. Our only thoughts were that we wanted to get back here with her and make sure everything was going well, said Lisa. Brittany had emergency surgery to set her spine in place. She happened to be climbing with first responders, who knew exactly how to keep this bad fall from becoming a paralyzing disaster. They stabilized me and kept me from freaking out, said Brittany. Brittany says rock climbing takes focus and calm. The 23 year old now uses those talents to ensure a speedy recovery. I'm excited to get strong and go climb again, said Brittany smiling. Brittany says she likely won't try that same climb again, but will visit the area as soon as possible. She was transferred to Emory hospital in Atlanta to complete her rehab. She also plans on graduating this spring from Kennesaw State University.By Drew Bollea
