Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument located in the English county of Wiltshire, about 3.2 kilometres (2.0 mi) west of Amesbury and 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) north of Salisbury. One of the most famous prehistoric sites in the world, Stonehenge is composed of earthworks surrounding a circular setting of large standing stones. The surrounding circular earth bank and ditch, which constitute the earliest phase of the monument, have been dated to about 3100 BC. The site and its surroundings were added to the UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 1986 in a co-listing with Avebury henge monument, and it is also a legally protected Scheduled Ancient Monument. Stonehenge itself is owned by the Crown and managed by English Heritage while the surrounding land is owned by the National Trust.

The dating of cremated remains found that burials took place as early as 3000 B.C, when the first ditches were being built around the monument. Burials continued at Stonehenge for at least another 500 years when the giant stones which mark the landmark were put up. Stonehenge was a place of burial from its beginning to its zenith in the mid third millennium B.C. The cremation burial dating to Stonehenge's sarsen stones phase is likely just one of many from this later period of the monument's use and demonstrates that it was still very much a domain of the dead.

This is my first time visiting the United Kingdom and Stonehenge is one of the places in my bucket list.
Driving from Saltford to Stonehenge is approximately 36 miles, which is more or less an hour drive. Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument in Wiltshire, England. It is located two miles (3 km) west of Amesbury. It consists of a ring of standing stones. Each standing stone around 13 feet (4.0 m) high, seven feet (2.1 m) wide and weighing around 25 tons. Archaeologits believe it was constructed from 3000 BC to 2000 BC. One of the most famous landmarks in the United Kingdom, Stonehenge is regarded as British cultural icon.

Amesbury (/ˈeɪmzbəri/) is a town and civil parish in Wiltshire, England. It is most famous for the prehistoric monument of Stonehenge which is in its parish, and for the discovery of the Amesbury Archer—dubbed the King of Stonehenge in the press—in 2002. Amesbury is 6 miles (10 km) from the nearest station at Grateley on the London to Salisbury line. The town's own station, Amesbury railway station, was closed in 1963 along with the rest of the Bulford Camp Railway.
Amesbury Bus Station closed in January 2014 along with the station in nearby Salisbury as a cost cutting measure,[25] but longer distance Salisbury Reds services still stop in the town. Stagecoach operate a Salisbury-Amesbury-Tidworth-Andover service,[26] and National Express coaches run Salisbury-Amesbury-London.[27]

Upon arrival at London Heathrow, we pick up a car from SIXT, and drive straight to Stonehenge. The distance was about 75 miles and the drive was quite smooth. Took slightly over an hour.

Stonehenge is well worth a visit. Currently (2017) it costs £19.50 per adult which perhaps is a little pricey but English heritage have done a great job and put on a few displays too. The stone's do need to be protected these days because they were being eroded by the millions of visitors who visit the site over the years.
I find the thought that a tunnel to carry traffic beneath the monument to horrendous! Don't know why, it just seems wrong!
