...wow.
What fun!
The course was definitely a little ragged around the edges which is what you get in exchange for not playing a flat course & playing in March, with a lot of wind & fallen tree-branches on the course. There were a lot of sand-traps with rocks in them (ironically), not all that small either, sometimes I had to just pull the ball over to a different part of the traps, but really again this is March golf. It's not going to be in spring & summer condition.
The big thing about this course is that is is very vertical, lots of up & down play, with a large spread between tees & a fair number of big carries, well over 200 yards. It is definitely a course to come to play if you think that you are a big hitter or you want to see what a big hitter's course is like. It has a lot of water & even in March the greens were in good shape, with decent fairways & fairway rough. But this course is really all about playing up & down hills & around obstacles. The fairways are wide enough but just barely so, with rare exception, & what you get in exchange for a wide fairway is a very long carry. it is definitely an adventure-course but not so much & so crazy as Blue Ridge Shadows.
This is a great course a rare find & absolutely one of the most entertaining courses that I've ever played...but that is because I like crazy-big courses that are hard to play. This is absolutely not some small course with tight lies that is as much a challenge to stay out of the woods as anything. Here, there really isn't that much of woods. There's a fair amount of waste & water, but not overwhelmingly so. It's really just a big course that truly challenges your ability to cover horizontal & vertical space & play decent golf while entertaining the hell out of you.
Without a doubt one of the best courses that I've ever played in my life, & what saddens me is that I would love to play it again but I'm afraid of overplaying it.
My only problems with this round were the houses surrounding a few holes, again the road noise in front, & the $70 cost to play a late Saturday round the first week in March. Other than that, I would recommend that anyone reading this play this course at least once. It's simply an awesome course.
It's not perfect.
But it's still pretty damm-good.
Easily 1 of the top 3 DC area public courses that I've played. I literally have a hard time thinking of a better area course to play, though I didn't want to score it as an A- because it is really just very-good not great. If there is an area course better than this one? I’ve yet to see it. Seriously.
I am proud to say that I’ve spent 25 years practicing to play a course like this even passably-well. Just well enough to not entirely embarrass myself to play it.
Most of the DC area courses are not even close to as good as this. Not even near, it's almost not even the same game. And there are quite a few that fall in there between $50 & $100/round for 18 with a cart. Not even Bethpage Black, not a single one that is this good. Don't get me wrong, the Black is a good course & has some very-nice holes but so much of it is mundane & a lot of the rest of it relies on waste & traps almost everywhere and long, thick rough that at 3 is barely playable. It's a good course but it's not *this* good. I mean this is almost like golfing Nirvana if you like a course with good verticality, that doesn't have big wide-open spray-hitters fairways but also doesn't have a lot of waste & woods off the fairways either.
I apparently pissed-off the guy who stored the carts by staying out on the course until dusk. He came out to me at the 17th teebox, said I'd gotten over 4 hours of golf so I should be happy, than “escorted” me off the course. I thought his attitude was ridiculous on many levels, especially considering that the clubhouse was not only still open but actually serving dinner, but I didn’t say anything to challenge him and then he began to get righteous. To tell a patron who had paid $70 to play your course that they had enough golf because they've played over 4 hours when they are standing there on the 17th teebox with a club trying to finish the round & you're dragging them off the course, that's pretty dense. But yeah, I would have been done long before that f it wasn't such a big, challenging, fun & open-enough course. His attitude was still bullshit. People don’t pay to play 4 hours of golf, it’s not like renting a room by the hour.
On the other hand be aware that it might just take an extra hour to finish your round if you’re out there by yourself.

Shenandoah Valley GC, Front Royal, VA 161004
Holes: 9x3 Par: 36 Length: 3095 yards Slope: 126 Rating: 71.1
Grade: B
Location: 15 min. NE of Front Royal, of the Rte 577 exit off I-66 just before Front Royal proper. I just continued on north to Rte 340 to Frederick. A nice ride in the countryside, a nice round of golf.
A nice 9 holes by 3 courses combo, though the blue course (red, white, blue) was closed for renovation.
A basic yet still spicy woods course in a rectangular area with some houses on one corner, a nice clubhouse on one side and a bunch of meandering holes in the middle laid-out side by side. Mostly evergreens and some normal trees. Very little dense woods & foliage like you'd find at South Riding, Lees' Hill or Cross Creek. The course is much more like Enterprise but it's just a better course than Enterprise, and even then all the dense foliage is just along one or two holes, between the houses on the far side of the course from the clubhousee, and all of that was OB. Nothing in the way of trees that is dense enough to keep you from crossing into adjacent fairways or going into the trees and scrambling out, other than the occasional pile of waste and the long rough, but chasing balls hit offline into the long rough is a true exercise in frustration. Seriously it was a problem to find a ball just a few feet off the green or fairway, very similar to some parts of the Oak course at Twin Lakes. The rough was simply too long in a lot of places. You can practically forget about finding your ball if you hit off-fairway and lose sight of it, don't see it actually come down and don't immediately see it when you first ride out there in your cart. I almost gave-up on finding a ball that was within a clubs' length of the green. So DEFINITELY do a good job of tracking your shots. Most of the courses that I've played don't have rough so long that it is effectively waste. This is not a problem that I've had in a long time & it was quite frustrating to lose so many balls that were just off the fairway or green. Of course not every time but maybe about a third of the time this would happen. I lost a lot of balls on shots that were just not that bad. On one I lost my tee-shot which was not a huge surprise as I hit it over a blind ridge & it probably went down into the woods/OB just on the other side of the ridge. I dropped & hit my approach 175yds, it went off the green to the right near the cart-path, I clearly saw it heading right past the green directly towards the next tee-box that was maybe 50 yards past & right of the green.. I saw it disappear in the grass maybe 20 yards in front of the next tee-box. I never found it. Of course, on the next 2 holes I pull 3 shots left & find them all. My last tee-shot, the dog-right to the green just next to the clubhouse, I hit a ball that rolled through the fairway & into the rough. It took me 2 minutes to find it just off the fairway. The deep rough was a serious problem & when I did hit into the trees I only found the ball half the time even though there was plenty of open space around the trees & not much foliage, bushes or waste. You absolutely have to keep an eye on your ball if don't want to waste an hour looking for balls.
Also the pot-bunkers are really fun to play with people milling around at an adjacent green or tee, or even the clubhouse, making noise, and you feel that half of them are watching you. If the course is at-all busy, you're going to see a lot of people playing near you, & sometimes very near you, as they play adjacent tee-shots, fairways & greens. So it does take a bit of focus to play here & it's not really a course for players who like to get lost in the woods & play golf in isolation. The environment is chatty, often, & certainly you won't be alone in the woods that much. I rarely play courses with 2 adjacent tee-boxes each hitting the same way on adjacent fairways. Often here it was a tee-box or a green next to another green or tee-box, on occasion right next to the clubhouse *and* another teebox. Luckily the other groups were not all that noisy.
Par5s about 450-500 yds, Par4s 350-400 yds, Par3s 135-175 yards from the back tees. Moderate-sized greens with some pot-bunkers and long rough but very little waste and woods in play around the greens. A very nice course with long rough (long enough in places to hide balls), some OB and some houses near the course, some greenskeeper-fouling, some mountain-views but not much. Nothing overwhelming here but nothing underwhelming either. No road-noise is a major plus. A good solid round. No water or carries over waste, not much waste off the sides of the course & very little in the way of dense woods but still some perils, elevated tees, elevated greens, nicely sloped greens that were a good challenge to putt but still in good shape. Just good solid course, if a bit on the short & easy side. A very-nice clubhouse with no showers. This is definitely a nice middle-of-the road course & at $12 for hotdeal on GolfNow certainly a win.

SUMMARY
=======
For decades in the U.S., there have been isolated incidents of removal of Confederate monuments and memorials, although generally opposed in public opinion polls, and several U.S. States have passed laws over 115 years to hinder or prohibit further removals.
In the wake of the Charleston church shooting in June 2015, several municipalities in the United States removed monuments and memorials on public property dedicated to the Confederate States of America. The momentum accelerated in August 2017 after the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. The removals were driven by the belief that the monuments glorify white supremacy and memorialize a treasonous government whose founding principle was the perpetuation and expansion of slavery. Many of those who object to the removals, like President Trump, believe that the artifacts are part of the cultural heritage of the United States. The vast majority of these Confederate monuments were built during the era of Jim Crow laws (1877–1954) and the Civil Rights Movement (1954–1968). Detractors claim that they were not built as memorials but as a means of intimidating African Americans and reaffirming white supremacy. The monuments have thus become highly politicized; according to Eleanor Harvey, a senior curator at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and a scholar of Civil War history: If white nationalists and neo-Nazis are now claiming this as part of their heritage, they have essentially co-opted those images and those statues beyond any capacity to neutralize them again. In some Southern states, state law restricts or prohibits altogether the removal or alteration of public Confederate monuments. According to Stan Deaton, senior historian at the Georgia Historical Society, These laws are the Old South imposing its moral and its political views on us forever more. This is what led to the Civil War, and it still divides us as a country. We have competing visions not only about the future but about the past.
