We meet a young family that has decided to stay on the family farm but try something totally different, a pizza farm. To compliment their CSA program, every friday night in season the family opens their farm to the public for a popup pizza shop on the farm. From the crust to the veggies, everything comes from the farm. Utilizing two brick ovens that living outside they have taught themselves the art of pizza making and the community has taken notice as hundreds of people come out each friday.
Wisconsin's Homegrown Farmer: Wisconsin Public Television Special
The University of Wisconsin–Madison and Wisconsin Public Television have partnered for “Wisconsin’s Homegrown Farmer,” a program about the challenges facing a new generation of farmers that will begin airing Sept. 8.
The show features three Wisconsin farm families and their unique approaches to making modern farming a success. Working beside UW–Madison researchers, including Ruth Genger in plant pathology, Dadit Hidayat from the Nelson Institute and Kent Weigel in dairy science, each family’s passion and commitment shines through as they work to continue the legacy of family farming in Wisconsin.
Kat Becker and Tony Schultz at Stoney Acres Farms in Athens, Wis., transitioned his family’s defunct dairy farm into an organic vegetable farm that relies on variety – both in types of crops raised as well as variety of “ventures” they undertake. Maple syrup, Community Supported Agriculture, pizza night – all help to ensure the sustainability of their small family farm. By embracing variety, they have kept their family farm viable.
Lloyd and Daphne Holterman at Rosy Lane Dairy in Watertown, Wis., want to have the healthiest herd of cows possible. Long-time Wisconsin dairy farmers who weathered the challenging agricultural era of the 1980s, their commitment to collaborating with UW–Madison dairy science researchers for healthier cows has helped their farm to survive. Lloyd’s passion for genomics has yielded huge successes that reach far beyond his own Wisconsin dairy.
Robert Pierce wants to provide fresh, safe, affordable food to his urban community at the South Madison Farmers’ Market. He became an organic farmer and manages a neighborhood farmer’s market to help him achieve that goal. But the needs of his community go beyond access to good food. Through a partnership with the Nelson Institute, Pierce has created an urban agriculture-training program for ex-felons from his neighborhood. Helping to provide this career path for ex-felons benefits the entire community.
Together these stories of three very different Wisconsin farmers, the variety of approaches they take and collaborations with researchers and specialists, demonstrate the changing landscape of farming in Wisconsin.

022: Kat Becker on Diversity, Family, and Pizza
My guest for this episode is Kat Becker, who farms with her husband, Tony Schultz, at Stoney Acres Farm. Stoney Acres is located on the edge of the north woods in Wisconsin, at the border between zones 3 and 4. Managing 150 acres, Kat and Tony raise ten acres of vegetables and fruit, rotationally grazed cows, pork, maple syrup, small grains, and mushrooms. And they host on-farm pizza night every Friday night during the warm season, featuring their own farm ingredients – including the wheat – baked in one of their two wood-fired ovens. We talk about the challenges of managing this diversity, how pizza has helped them integrate into their community, family dynamics, and Kat’s transition to focusing on the farm full time.

Athens Fair Documentary
The Athens Fair Documentary covers one weekend out of every year in northern Wisconsin, when the universe seems to be in perfect harmony. The footage was shot by myself(Joe Piemeisel) over the course of three days while vacationing in Athens, WI. The gear used covers: a Canon 60D(with Cinestyle, 24p), a Sigma 30mm F1.4 lens, a DFocus follow focus, GiniRig shoulder rig, Audio Technica shotgun mic using on-camera audio, and a Manfrotto tripod.
Post-production covers: Editing in FCP(before I switched to Premiere), color in Magic Bullet Colorista/Looks, license-free music from Soundtrack Pro, lower-thirds in Motion, and old photos were scanned and edited in Photoshop.
I created this short documentary for a final project in school, and out of deep love and sentimental attachment to the event documented. The town of Athens, WI is a small rural farm community with a population of 1,500. Many of my family members help make up that number, with their original immigration from Germany happening in the 1800's. They've had the tradition of the Athens Fair for 107 years and was started to promote the growth of agriculture in the town. Now many of the same traditions still exist, but with a lot more partying.
