Rausch Creek Diversion Well Project
Every week for nearly 20 years, members of the Doc Fritchey Chapter of Trout Unlimited in Dauphin and Lebanon counties have been adding limestone to two diversion wells treating mine drainage entering Rausch Creek, a tributary to Stony Creek in Lebanon County. And their work has paid off. For the first time they have seen native brown and brook trout in the stream where before even stocked trout didn't survive long. Partners in the project include Pennsy Supply who donates the limestone and Reigel Trucking from Annville that delivers the limestone. David Hess, Editor of PA Environmental Digest, went along with the Diversion Well Gang one Sunday to see how these dedicated volunteers keep our streams healthy. (And yes, it was raining!) This was also the first diversion well project to treat acid mine drainage in the United States. Today's Diversion Well Gang was: Larry Westhafer (co-chair of the Diversion Well Project), Steve Long, Gerry Miller, Chuck Hill, Dennis Koffman and Bob Pennell. Donald Thomas is the other co-chair for this project. For more information on the Doc Fritchey Chapter of Trout Unlimited, visit: DFTU.org November 12, 2006
Hike to Stony Mountain Fire Lookout Tower- PA
A video describing the hike to the Stony Mountain Fire Lookout tower in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, not far from Harrisburg. The video begins at the 325 (Clarks Valley Road) Appalachian Trailhead, follows the AT briefly, forks right onto H. Knauber Trail (red blaze) and reaches the summit of Stony Mountain in State Game Lands 210, also called Anthony's Wilderness. From the summit, you make a right at the cairn and follow the blue blaze trail directly to the firetower, which is about 125 feet tall and offers outstanding views across Dauphin County. This is easily my favorite hike of the area.
Quick Facts- Trailhead elevation: 533 feet. Summit elevation: 1687 feet. Elevation gain: 1154 feet. Distance (one way): about 1.7 miles. Closest towns: Dauphin, Enders, Grantville, Ft. Indiantown Gap, Harrisburg.

hiking Stony Mountain | 30 June 2009
Hiking to and on Stony Mountain in Dauphin County, central Pennsylvania, on Pennsylvania State Game Lands #211. Stony Mountain -- parts of which are found in Dauphin and Lebanon counties -- is one of the ridges of the Ridge and Valley physiographic province. The Ridge and Valley physiographic province is found in parts of Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama.
This hike began on the Appalachian Trail, and then, after a relatively short distance (perhaps a quarter of a mile or so), we veered onto the Henry Knauber Trail. The HKT brings hikers to the top of Stony Mountain in a more or less direct hike up the north side of Stony Mountain ridge. Mistakenly, on the day of this hike, I misremembered my experience hiking here seven years before. Also, I believe that some new trails had been established since my previous hiking experience. This resulted in an unsatisfying experience in which me and my companions did not reach our goal: the Devils Race Course blockfield. (See the related videos Devils Race Course | 13 July 2009 parts 1 and 2 to see the video record of a hiking experience that was successful in its goal.)
Some basic rules for hiking these forest trails:
(1) The Appalacian Trail is marked everywhere by large (2 X 6) vertically-oriented, rectangular white blaze marks on tree trunks at about eye-level or higher.
(2) Each blaze mark should be visible from the last blaze mark.
Keeping these simple rules in mind -- and had I been thinking -- I would have realized that turning onto the Henry Knauber Trail -- which is marked by red blazes -- was a mistake in terms of repeating my previous hiking experience.
One of the best resources to have before hiking the trails in this area, is the excellent well-produced map series titled APPALACHIAN TRAIL IN PENNSYLVANIA, specifically the map for SECTIONS 7 & 8, SUSQUEHANNA RIVER TO SWATARA GAP. The APPALACHIAN TRAIL IN PENNSYLVANIA map series is published by the Keystone Trails Association (website: kta-hike.org). Each map, adding in the shipping and handling, costs about $10. Get this map and give it a bit of study before heading out to this area.
The U.S. Geological Survey 1:24,000 scale topographic maps covering this area are the ENDERS, PA and GRANTVILLE, PA quadrangles.
Elevation at the bridge crossing Clark Creek (beginning of hike) is approximately 530 feet (162 meters) above sea level. Elevation along the ridge top of Stony Mountain is approximately 1620 feet (494 meters). Total elevation gain during hike = 1090 feet (332 meters). Total distance hiked on this day was approximately 4 miles (7 km).

Historic Beidleman House c.1850
Historic Beidleman House c.1850
This beautiful historic home was once the summer home of the 12th Lt. Governor of Pennsylvania, Edward E. Beidleman (1873 – 1929). A gorgeous blend of modern amenities and historic detailing, this spacious brick & stucco home features 5+ bedrooms & 3 bathrooms, stunning stain glass, vintage architectural detail, 1950’s tiled bathrooms, outstanding wood floors, custom woodwork, porches & gardens, all on 1.7 acre private lot. With views of the Susquehanna River and the relaxing sounds of nearby Stony Creek Falls, this historic estate has not been on the market in 70 years. Originally a Pre-Civil War barn for the historic Gerry West House across Stony Creek and then converted to a dormitory for tannery workers, the Beidleman House is now a spacious private estate, perfect for entertaining and just minutes from the town Dauphin, with charming shops & restaurants.
By contributing a measure of “tender loving care”, the next stewards can join the handful of previous caretakers of this extraordinary estate, in honoring the spirit & soul of the 1850 landmark and enjoy the wonderful benefits of owning a unique piece of Pennsylvania history.
This is a home of rare and beautiful distinction, close to Harrisburg, Gettysburg & Philadelphia, yet a world away.

Secrets of the Swatara 2016 Sojourn
Lebanon PA, May 7-8, 2016: Coordinated by the Swatara Watershed Association on their 28th annual Swatara Sojourn, paddlers floated from 1929 Blacks Bridge Road, Annville, Lebanon County PA to Middletown Boat Launch, Dauphin County PA.
In addition to seeing Indian Echo Caverns, the Union Canal Tow Path, numerous bridges, many under repair, the M&H Railroad line, limestone outcrops, HersheyPark Campground...,the wildlife on this sojourn was inspiring--over 100 turtles, mostly snappers, a bald eagle, great blue heron rookery, a frog, and more were around every bend in the Swatara. I don't know about you, but I'm feeling blessed right now.
Sure a few canoes tipped, but that was to be expected. Everyone was a good sport, followed directions, and worked together as a team. Good job!
I hope your muscles are returning to normal, and that you didn't get sunburned too much.
Even with the high water, you pulled a significant amount of trash from the Swatara to leave it better than we found it. The fellows from Renaissance Crossroads were a big help unloading the canoe garbage barges. They also moved the picnic tables into place for us at the Watershed campground.
We want to thank all of our sponsors too. Without them, we couldn't have covered expenses.
All of our presenters were pro-bono this year. Special thanks go out to Dick Blouch with the Lebanon Valley Conservancy, Sally Zanio with the Manada Conservancy, and Mike Willeman, project leader on the Bordner Cabin renovations.
To the safety team, photographers, and shore support. Thank you for your tremendous service. We truly appreciate your joint efforts to provide a safe and fun event.

Hiking McKay Hollow Trail, Monte Sano State Park, Alabama
The McKay Hollow Trail is a 4 mile out and back trail located in Monte Sano State Park, near Huntsville, Alabama (we combined McKay Hollow with the South Plateau Loop Trail on this day to make a 4 mile loop hike instead).
We had a beautiful day with the temperatures not too hot for summer in Alabama and the humidity relatively low for this time of year. This trail features a small waterfall (only a trickle on this day due to dry weather) and a steep descent into a deep and refreshingly cool valley; or hollow as they say around here. During the summer season, the views are few and filtered, but the forest is beautiful and green. There is no reliable water along this trail, so make sure to bring plenty along.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

SUMMARY
=======
Mobile was founded as the capital of colonial French Louisiana in 1702 and remained a part of New France for over 60 years. During 1720, when France warred with Spain, Mobile was on the battlefront, so the capital moved west to Biloxi. In 1763, Britain took control of the colony following their victory in the Seven Years War. Following the American Revolutionary War, Mobile did not become a part of the United States, as it was part of territory captured by Spain from Great Britain in 1780.
Mobile first became a part of the United States in 1813, when it was captured by American forces and added to the Mississippi Territory, then later re-zoned into the Alabama Territory in August 1817. Finally on December 14, 1819, Mobile became part of the new 22nd state, Alabama, one of the earlier states of the U.S. Forty-one years later, Alabama left the Union and joined the Confederate States of America in 1861. It returned in 1865 after the American Civil War.
Mobile had spent decades as French, then British, then Spanish, then American, spanning 160 years, up to the Civil War.
