New Zealand Adventures: Waiheke Island - Stony Batter
This was a day trip to Stony Batter, Waiheke Island.
There were 3 guns which were installed here during World War 2 to defend Auckland. The guns were connected by tunnels which are open for public viewing.
Unfortunately the tunnels were closed the day we visited due to management issues. So we ended up just walking around the park. We found one of the tunnels open but we didn't venture to far inside cause it was very creepy and our torches were pretty crap!
Waiheke Island Bouldering (Stony Batter)
Great day to visit the Waiheke Boulders, just a short ferry ride from Auckland. Good weather, zero crowds, amazing views, and some fun little problems. We hung out in The Zoo area with the cows for the day.
Featured problems:
Flounder VE (0:08)
Mantel Practice V0 (0:55)
Giraffe V0 (1:16)
A Dog V1 (2:54)
Tiger V2 (4:00)
The Caterpillar V4 (6:45)

Get Some - Hooks Bay, Waiheke Island
We took a day trip around Waiheke Island and ended up walking for an hour through farm and bush to get to Hooks Bay on the seaward coast of Waiheke Island. Totally secluded and no one else at the beach...top day.
Beautiful Waiheke Island

Stoney Batter Sleepover
Has anyone ever slept over in the magazine below this WWII gun emplacement before? Ever?
On a cold, blustery evening, we walk inside the tunnels into the warmth where the environment only changes a few degrees year round. That means that it is cool in summer and warm in winter. Yeah! See the boys enjoying a brew and some great convo before bed.
EcoZip Adventure Waiheke Island, New Zealand
Waiheke Island is just a 30 minute Ferry ride from Aukland. Then Eco Zip already have complimentary transportation available for you. This is something you defiantly have to do if you ever visit Aukland New Zealand. I had the best time of my life. I experienced the state of the art fox flying and also an astonishing tour guided bush walk on Waiheke Island.
( I do not own any of these songs)

Waiheke Island, New Zealand, Long version
We had a one day trip to Waiheke Island to see Perpetual Guardian Sculpture on the Gulf 2019. It took only a 40-minute ferry from Downtown Auckland to the Island. The return ferry ticket costs NZ$40 for the adult. Waiheke Island has been voted one of the world’s Top 20 islands by Conde Nast Traveller in 2016, and included on Lonely Planet’s list of top 10 travel regions in 2015.
The information below is from the website
With pristine beaches, world class wines, and fantastic cuisine, it’s easy to see why Waiheke Island is considered the jewel in the Hauraki Gulf’s crown. Although only 35 minutes from Auckland, you’ll feel like you’re a world away as your browse through art galleries, sample award-winning olive oils and soak in stunning sea views.
With so much to do, there’s truly something for everyone on Waiheke Island and we’re very proud to have been voted one of the world’s Top 20 islands by Conde Nast Traveller in 2016, and included on Lonely Planet’s list of top 10 travel regions in 2015.
With regular ferry sailings, Waiheke is the perfect place to escape to for the day, or even just the afternoon. Once here though, it’s hard to leave, and our many beautiful accommodation venues offer the perfect solution.

New Zealand! Waiheke Island (eileen's 30th) 2017
Heylo familee and bez fwens. This would be my first attempt at editing a video relating to travel, and it would also serve as some sort of a time capsule for us to remember some highlights from our adventures.
We'd love to share more of our celebrations and happy memories, so i guess i'll be uploading more of these, as much as i possibly can, and as much as my time-travel schedule allows.
2~3 December 2017:
Waiheke is the most populated and second-largest island in the Hauraki Gulf of New Zealand.
('Gulf': noun; a deep and large area of sea, almost surrounded by land, with a narrow mouth; also known as an arm of the sea.)
At just a 40mins ferry ride from Auckland, Roy planned a surprise weekend trip for eileen's 30th birthday celebration, so she could eventually find out if Waiheke was worth the hype.
However, due to her strength in deductive reasoning, coupled with the fact that she is actually a very proficient time-traveller, she's figured out where they were headed just a day before the trip but still imagined it to be a surprise anyway.
很好 (thumbs-up memories):
- The convenience of walking to Wynyard Quarter/Wharf (ferry terminal), because we live in Auckland city (woohoooo!).
- Not driving, because we tend to bring heaps more stuff when using our own vehicle; which means, less stuff to carry.
- Arriving at Waiheke and meeting the guy from the car rental company immediately (forgot his name, oops) and having this inexplicable feeling of fear and excitement all at once, then realizing it was because this experience was very very similar to arriving in Bali for our honeymoon.
- An overall laid-back and relaxing vibe throughout the entire island. All i wanted to do was to lie down and to strum my ukulele, which we did.
- Seashells! A small bag full of Hearts of Te Fiti! :)
- The food from Mudbrick Bistro was so good that i refused to poop it out. But i did la eventually. And just for my information the cake was not free or anything; we ordered dessert and the waiter just added the candle and sang a very quick birthday song while struggling to light it in the wind. hahahaha that was funny.
- Ah yes and because of the return-ferry delay, i lived to see (and capture) one of the most amazing sunsets ever.
不怎么好可是还是很好 (thumbs-to-the-left memories):
- I am of the opinion that the good stuff would always triumph the bad, so... lesson learnt is to always use sunscreen waaay before exposure, because sunburns are no fun. But the skin-peeling was soo satisfying though.
- There aren't much free activities to do in Waiheke, so it could have been a smarter move to check if there were any ferry delays sooner. Then we might have had more time to get another awesome atas ice-cream hahahaha.
- We had zero alcohol on the 'island of wine', which actually should be up there with 很好 (thumbs-up)! Just perhaps some might say it would be a pity as we were right at the doorstep of plenty of vineyards.
More Facts:
1. Waiheke is accessible by regular seaplane services too! *faaancy (you could even book a private helicopter flight to the island if you're intending to be more fancy).
2. Instead of driving our car, Roy figured it was slightly more cost-effective to rent a car from the island, and he rented ours via Waiheke Island Motors at $70/day (Manual, Daihatsu Sirion), and we rented it for 2 days.
(Cheapest option would be to rent a scooter at $60/day.
Manual cars were $10/day cheaper than automatic cars and i love my husband because he can drive both and i can drive neither hahaha).
3. If you're intending to cover the extreme ends of the island, it is definitely a good idea to rent a car from the island (ours offered a free pick-up), or to drive your own vehicle and cross the sea via the same regularly-scheduled ferry services that we took. Competitive fares between Sealink and Fullers.
Alternatively there are bus services, but we haven't figured that out and were mostly told that they were not very frequent and wouldn't cover the entire island.
4. We stayed with a host via Airbnb (rented a room) and i feel that it wouldn't be appropriate to share videos of their private space so i didn't. Took heaps of pictures though, because their garden was superb and i wanted to tell Lauryn that her Liquorice was so happy! I have a feeling Xander and Arissa would love the little cottage and garden area too. :)
5. I have contemplated sharing further travel information and photos on a blog but have unfortunately not gotten around to it... yet. So... stay tuned?
See you (hopefully) soon then. Big hugs and farts,
Roy and eileen :3
