College Street in Kolkata is the throbbing home of a maze of old book shops and stalls and this traditional place of learning and trading hosts the largest non-trading book fair in the world every year. But encroaching globalisation, in the form of a modern and fancy book mall being built opposite, casts a shadow over this traditional and treasured place. Is it a threat or an opportunity for the traditional book traders? While India embraces globalisation, what does it mean for ordinary people and the intellectual traditions of this city?

Hotel Calcutta book trailer
Trailer for the book Hotel Calcutta (literary fiction).
The century-old Hotel Calcutta run by an Englishman, is under threat from land sharks who want to raze the building and build a shopping mall. As the staff stare at uncertain times, a monk turns up at the Calcutta hotel and prophesies that the hotel will still stand if a wall of stories can be built. Peter Dutta -- the manager -- though a little unsure, is ready to give it a shot and begins looking for a storyteller. A painter, who has just stepped into the bar, volunteers to tell the first story. Next it is Peter's turn.
From day to day, as the storytelling fever catches on, new guests arrive, among them a shifty-eyed producer of porn flicks, an American woman who hears the footsteps of a dead soldier in the corridor and finally an odd pair who pretend to be war historians. Soon it seems they have all arrived there with a purpose. Will their stories protect the hotel or will Hotel Calcutta crumble under the sledgehammers of the land sharks?
Between techno-angst, deathless love, surreal adventure and an epidemic of thievery, this is a novel that taps into the power of stories to light up our age of trenchant uncertainties and powerful illusions.

STORY:
In a small lane in Kolkata, there's a little library dedicated to overlooked writers.
My name is Sandip Dutta. This is the Kolkata Little Magazine Library and Research Center.
Regular bookstores sell normal books to regular people. Only at the Little Magazine Library will you find books and magazines with an unusual point of view.
80,000 little magazines are there - mostly in Bengali. This is a unique library as it only preserves the youth literature, non-establishment literature, and non-commercial literature.
When Sandip was a young student he went to the National Library and saw to his horror that they were throwing away stacks of little magazines.
It touched my heart. I feel they insulted me and all little magazines. I promised to build a library of little magazines.
Little is not little. Little magazines creates new writers. They share about the ground-level people. Some magazines discover new styles of writing.

Calcutta's college street houses book stores which are thronged by bibliophiles
Literature commands an impressive following and remains a passion with the educated Bengali middle class. Calcutta's celebrated college street houses book stores which are thronged by the bibliophiles. But it is the countless literary magazines which sustain and revitalise this interest in literature and poetry.
Indian poet Sunil Gangopadhyay says Calcutta's little magazines are unique. I don't know of any other city in the world which produces so many of them. Calcutta publishes between 200 and 400 little magazines, mainly, during the Book Fair, Tagore's birthday which is celebrated in a big way here and the Durga Pujas, when many puja specials are produced.
