Nine Gables Vineyard and Winery - Plymouth, California
Nine Gables Vineyard and Winery is located on what was once the Old Pieroni Ranch. Antonio & Ester Pieroni immigrated to America in April, 1905 and settled in Amador County. The old farm house, which is still standing west of Nine Gables, was built in 1857 and Mission grapes originally planted in the early 1900's are still growing around the Nine Gables Vineyard and Winery house and tasting room.

Plymouth, California - Located on Historic Highway 49, Plymouth is in the heart of Gold Country and is a perfect place to stay when visiting beautiful Shenandoah Valley, Amador County's Wine Region. Amador County is now home to over 30 wineries. Many are situated near Plymouth, on scenic back roads in picturesque rural terrain of historic California. Most Amador wineries are small family operations.
El Dorado, California - One of the wine world's best kept secrets lies deep in the heart of El Dorado County in the Sierra foothills. Within an hour's drive from Sacramento, you will find over 20 family-owned boutique wineries who take pride in their land, their wines, and their customers. Since becoming its own appellation in 2001, Fair Play has developed a reputation for high quality wine grapes that yield deeply flavorful, intense wines from an amazingly diverse range of grape varieties. Apple Hill area offers a number of award-winning wineries, as well.
Lodi, California - Lodi is best known from the Creedence Clearwater Revival song Lodi, and also as a center of wine production (the Zinfandel Capital of the World), although its vintages have traditionally been less prestigious than those of Sonoma and Napa counties. However, in recent years, the Lodi Appellation has become increasingly respected for its Zinfandel wine and other eclectic varietals.
Murphys, California - Murphys is rapidly becoming a mecca for wine enthusiasts, with a growing and vibrant wine industry establishing itself in and around the town. The Murphys area is currently home to more than a dozen family-owned and operated boutique wineries, all of which welcome visitors year-round for wine tasting and/or tours. Many of these wineries have tasting rooms right on Main St., within comfortable strolling distance of one another.
Placer Hills, California - The Placer County Wine Trail is a series of small family-run boutique wineries each dedicated to preserving the historic wine-making legacy of the California Sierra Foothills with passion and craftsmanship. Varietals include the highly floral Viognier to dark-berried Tempranillo and lush Barbera as just some of the samplings. Other award winning wines include smoky and spiced Syrahs, Petite Sirah and adventurous blends. Cabernet Franc and flavor intense Zinfandel and dessert wine offerings provide plentiful options for every taste and occasion
Clarksburg, California - The wineries at the Old Sugar Mill, in Clarksburg, California, are a bridge to the rich agricultural heritage of the region, whose vineyards are staking their claim alongside the great wine growing regions of the world. The Old Sugar Mill is home to a unique community of six California wineries and their signature wines: Todd Taylor Wines, Three Wine Company, The Solomon Wine Company, Heringer Estates, Clarksburg Wine Company, and the Carvalho Family Wines. Further down the road Bogle Winery, offers a lush lawn area, nestled between the tasting room deck and the vineyards, which makes for the perfect picnicking spot.

Tasting wine at the vineyard of a USA President
Thomas Jefferson was the 3rd President of the USA. History will remember him as being the chief author of the Declaration of Independence, but politics wasn't his only passion.
In Charlottesville, Virginia you can see where Jefferson's first vineyards were planted in 1774. Virginia is one of the top up and coming wine destinations in the world and since replanting the original sites in 1981, Jefferson's Vineyards now produce some of the state's finest wines.
These days you needn't be leader of the free world to tour the vineyards. Wine lovers from all over the world descend on Charlottesville to sample the produce. In this video you can see just why people make the trip, and also see the following wines being tasted and analysed.
Chardonnay reserve 09
While at first showing crisp mineral aromas, the nose is quickly enveloped in bright citrus, apple and lemon peel. The palate shows intense fruits, underpinned by crisp minerality and balanced by tingling acidity and a broad rich mouthfeel. 2010 Lodi Wine Awards - Gold Medal
Viognier
Aromas of honeysuckle & apricot lead to similar flavors lifted by polished acidity & an underlying minerality. This cuvee will age gracefully the next 1 to 2 years. Serve only to your immediate family & closest friends & with any lighter foods. 2009 San Diego Int'l - Gold Medal
Meritage 08
Shows palate saturating red and black fruits from the first taste through the finish. With notes of cassis, espresso, chocolate on the mid-palate and Provencal herbs on the finish. This wine will bring handsome rewards if cellared for the next decade. 2010 San Diego Int'l - Gold Medal
Shirley Maclaine: Kicking Up Her Heels | The Hollywood Collection
Born in Richmond, Virginia, in 1934, Shirley MacLaine was the product of a strict middle-class background from which she and her brother, the future actor Warren Beatty, escaped into the fantasy world of show-biz. Her ballet training and her long-legged pixie charm led to rapid success on Broadway in musical comedy.
Subscribe for more Hollywood biographies and stories!
Inevitably, Hollywood called and by 1955 Shirley was cast in Hitchcock's The Trouble With Harry. It wasn't too long before the fine dramatic roles also came to her opposite the most popular leading men of the time, like Fred MacMurray, Jack Lemmon, Frank Sinatra, Clint Eastwood and Robert Mitchum.
But Shirley was not only known for her capacity to play opposite major male stars, she also soon made it clear that women had equal importance for her, both as fellow players and as real life friends. These women included Audrey Hepburn, Julia Roberts, and former Congresswoman Bella Abzug. It was apparent that this once perky gypsy of Broadway would leave her mark as one of the finest actresses of her day, an Academy-Award winner, who is ready and able to tackle any role that seems equal to her intelligence and talent. Her widely varied interests encompass the political, the literary and the mystical.

Smoke from Australia bushfires seen from space
Two Australian states are bracing for a day of catastrophic risk as firefighters battle over 100 deadly active bushfires that have produced clouds of smoke seen as far away as New Zealand.
Thousands of people are in the paths of the blazes in the states of Queensland and New South Wales, which have both declared a state of emergency.

Ep8 - Sailing in the late summer sun
Sailing in October, for us, usually means piling on the layers. Not this year! It's still 35 degrees on the Costa Blanca and we're really enjoying sailing, swimming and exploring in the sunshine.
We go in search of good anchorages, buy a paddleboard, and enjoy working on the boat without the customary wind and rain that we usually injure at the end of the season.

OUR ADVENTURE:
We are sailing slowly around the world in our classic cutter rigged sailboat 'Fair Isle'. With the children leaving home we decided to sell our house in the UK and buy a boat in Holland. After two years refitting our Hans Christian 48T we have now set off a world voyage.
We are retiring early because we want to attempt this voyage in good health and while we're fit and strong enough to really enjoy it. We will have to work a bit as we go until we can draw our pensions and we honestly don't know how well that will work. In our real lives we are journalists and filmmakers so it was only natural for use to document our travels by filming the journey. We aim to produce a professional standard vlog of the whole trip and try to give the viewer a real insight into what it's like to live and travel on a 48 foot sailboat.
Our first aim is to sail South. After a winter getting iced in on the Markermeer in the Netherlands Judy insisted on warmer weather! So if you start from Episode 1 you will see us setting off from Eastbourne in the UK and travelling along the South Coast to Plymouth to enter a rally called ARC Portugal.
Our first goal is to reach the Mediterranean and that means sailing across the infamous Bay of Biscay. This was a very good test for our boat as the bay lived up to it's fearsome reputation and split the whole fleet with a force 10 storm. Storm Miguel cut through our path and meant we had to run to mainland Spain to escape the massive seas and fearsome winds. Six boats couldn't make it in time and spent several very uncomfortable days at sea. The fleet had several broken boats, but thankfully no injured people. And this was just Episode 2!
The excitement continued for the rest of our trip to the Med. Dolphins played in our bow wave, we sampled fantastic local foods and wines, great port in Porto! We found some beautiful anchorages and visit some wonderful historic places like Lisbon in Portugal, Cadiz in Spain and the fascinating port of Gibraltar.
We will show you what it's like to winter in the Mediterranean, how much it all costs and give hints and tips on where to go how to save money with your boat and the places you stay. We are also talking to other sailors. After years of broadcasting journalism we know how to get peoples stories and we regularly film other sailors to show their boats and lifestyle as well as ours. We can always learn from others.
Our long term plan is to spend a few years in the Mediterranean, on our list of place we want to visit are; Mallorca, Malta, Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily, Greece, Turkey, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, Italy, Tunisia, to name but a few!
When we feel we've seen the best of what the Med has to offer we will cross the Atlantic to the Caribbean, we are hoping we can fit in a trip to the Azores on the way.
We have no idea how long we might want to stay in the Caribbean but we do intend to have at least one excursion up the Eastern seaboard of the United States to visit the wonderful sailing areas of Florida, Virginia, sailing Meccas such as Chesapeake bay and hopefully get all the way up to New York.
Of course the South Pacific is somewhere every sailor wants to go and will be a real draw for us. So going through the Panama canal will be a real milestone and we really look forward to having the big doors shut behind us and sailing into the biggest sailing playground of all!

Small Batch EP11 Kombucha Dog
Small Batch is a series dedicated to the art of Craft Beverage making. We strive to tell the personal stories of passion and determination in all who break out on their own to start a brewery, or move their family to the country to farm and make wine, or decide they can no longer live the corporate life and start making kombucha and selling it at farmer's markets.
If you are, or know, a home brewer or someone who has taken the plunge to start a craft beverage company, we'd like to hear about it. Please email info@smallbatch.us and tell us a story.
Ep9 - Winter sun and white sand beaches.
Sailing the Mediterranean in November can be fantastic. Our trip from mainland Spain to the island of Ibiza was a great overnight sail. Accompanied by dolphins and sailing in shorts and tee shirts is not something we're used to this late in the year.
We found some wonderful sheltered anchorages in Formentera and Ibiza, swam in the crystal clear waters, practiced our paddle boarding and generally hung out on the white sand beaches.
Sailing off season is definitely something to be recommended.

What Americans Boozed On Throughout History
The history of alcohol in America, from colonial cider drinkers to prohibition hooch smugglers, shows the lengths Americans went for their booze. Some cowboys were said to be so desperate at the saloons they threw back a mixture of gin and strychnine, while some speculate that the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock in winter because they ran out of beer. In the late 19th century, Americans flocked to bars to try new, exciting cocktails, while German immigrants popularized a new style of beer.
