Ghost hunting on the Stovall Mill Covered Bridge near Helen, Georgia
Locals say don't cross the Stovall Mill Covered Bridge unless you're ready to face whatever it is calling out after dark. The tattered, wooden walking bridge in White County, Georgia has survived for a century. Legend has it, if you stand on it the bridge at night you'll hear a baby crying and a horse drawn carriage. We took a ghost hunter to the bridge to investigate.

“Best way to clear the air is to get it all out in the open.” – Atticus Finch
That’s our mantra. It’s also where we get our name: Atticus.
We’re a group of former newsroom journalists who found a different purpose with a new way of looking into things. Atticus produces documentary-style investigations about stories that aren’t always easy to talk about. They’re not always easy to see, either.
Sometimes the facts are hiding in confidential documents or classified reports. Other times the video we share is so unfiltered, it makes you feel like you should be looking the other way. Please don't. Remember, Best way to clear the air is to get it all out in the open.
That's exactly what we'll do with each episode.

Stovall Mill Covered Bridge
The Stovall Mill Covered Bridge is the smallest covered bridge in Georgia. Built in 1895, it is one-lane wide, 33 feet long, and made of wood. It spans Chickamauga Creek in White County and is located near State Route 255.
The bridge is currently owned by the White County Historical Society. In the past, it served as a link on the Cleveland to Clayton road; but by 1959, the road was moved away from the bridge. The Stovall Mill Covered Bridge has a variety of other names including the Helen Bridge (for the town of Helen), Chickamauga Bridge, Nacoochee Bridge, and Sautee Bridge.

Stovall Mill Covered Bridge
This bridge was built in 1895 by Will Pardue. It is 36.8 feet long with queen-post truss. It has a parking area, picnic area and historic marker. It is at Chickamauga Creek. It was also known as Sautee-Nacoochee, Helen Bridge, and Chickamauga.
Located in an area of White County, rich in history and legends of the Cherokee, Stovall Mill Bridge spans Chickamauga Creek. This is not to be confused with the more famous northwest Georgia Creek of the same name. An earlier covered bridge stood here but was washed away in the early 1890's. The bridge retains the name of the miller, Fred Stovall, Sr.; who operated the mill complex for many years.
The gristmill, sawmill and shingle mill were powered by a water turbine. All are gone now; only the remains of the dam are evident. - From Covered Bridges of Georgia by Thomas L. French, Jr. & Edward L. French. See more about the history of the Stovalls in this area.

blind susie - lula covered bridge
Lula Covered Bridge - In Gainesville, GA (Banks Co.)
Bridge Description: At 34 feet long in length, this bridge has the distinction of being the smallest covered bridge in Georgia and one of the smallest in the United States. This bridge can be seen from Antioch Road, but so can plenty of No Trespassing signs. Located on private property, a visit is not recommended despite the rather welcoming picnic tables and sign posted on the bridge. It was built with Kingpost truss. It is over Grove Creek.
This bridge was built in 1915 by W. M. Thomas. It was in service until 1969 when a nearby concrete bridge was built on the road's present alignment. In 1975 the bridge was taken apart and completely rebuilt on the banks before being lifted by a crane and placed back on its original foundations.
This bridge is often referred to as the Blind Susie or Hyder Bridge, but according to a local historian, that bridge was located on the other side of Banks County. Though it has since fallen, he said that remnants can still be seen in the creek. The real Blind Susie was a colorful woman who sat on her porch selling jars of moonshine that were hidden under her skirts.

The 96-foot long Coheelee Creek Covered

most beautiful and unique landmarks in the
Deep South.
this bridge uses steel rods as tension members in it's truss design. The result is similar to a queen post or Warren truss. The angled rods make the bridge unique, certainly in Georgia if not the entire US. The use of steel rods was fairly common for the late 19th century and can also be seen on the Concord Road Bridge and the Lula Bridg

This haunted house in Helen Ga. is awesome. It's obvious that the young kids that work here are truly having as much fun as the visitors. It's scary enough to be great entertainment, but not too scary as to be inappropriate for younger kids.
One really neat thing the kids here have been doing is during the day, they dress up in thier scary costumes, and walk accross the street from the haunted house down to the river, and entertain the hundreds of Helen Ga. tubers tubing down the Chattahoochee River.
This entire attraction is a hoot, and a must see attraction for anyone visiting Helen Ga.
