Escape The Ordinary: Stowe, Vermont
Thank you for heading over here to view this video! I’m incredibly excited to introduce my first short time lapse film, featuring my beautiful home town of Stowe, Vermont. I started shooting for it on a very cold evening in January 2014 and completed it on June 15, 2015. Many evenings and VERY early mornings were spent out on fields and mountain tops, some of them extremely cold (this is Vermont, after all). I frankly couldn’t tell you the number of photos I took, but it must be enormous. Beyond the +/- 5,000 you can see above there’s an even bigger amount that didn’t survive the editing process.
This video was produced solely by yours truly and solely on my own behalf: nobody paid me anything to create it. Nevertheless, a few acknowledgements are in order. The awesome background music was created by Blake Ewing and licensed to me by The Music Bed. The Stowe, Vermont logo and ‘Escape the Ordinary…’ tagline are courtesy of the Stowe Area Association, which was kind enough to let me use them. I alone take responsibility for any errors or omissions in this video.

2017 Vermont U14 (Bantam) State Championship Stowe v. Burlington
Members of the Stowe U14 team are Ethan Brown, Kyle Rahilly, Bria Dill, Rowan Keller, Andrew McDermott, Atticus Eiden, Jackson Graham, Henry Paumgarten, J.P. Daliere, Cam Anderson, Jack Hickey, Nick Daliere, Adrian Bryan and Tristan Love. Micke Hickey and Pat Rahilly share the head coaching duties; Brett Loomis is assistant coach and Nathan Libby is team manager.
The Stowe Raider U-14 team took to the ice for the last time in the regular season for the Vermont Amateur State Hockey Association championship game at Stowe Arena last weekend.
Stowe faced a familiar foe — the Burlington Bobcats. The teams played five times during the season, and Stowe won four.
But the pre-game jitters were complicated because no one knew which Bobcat team was going to show up: A. the one that killed the Raiders 6-0 to start the season? Or, B. the one that impaled itself on senseless penalties and lost the next four?
It looked like Option A from the get-go, and Stowe was just there to watch.
Down 1-0 after just a few minutes, Stowe wasn’t giving the packed arena much to cheer for in the first period other than a couple of missed scoring opportunities. Mercifully, with a second to go, a Bobcat clanked one off both pipes — but not in — as the buzzer sounded.
The home team skated to the bench to check its pulse. The perplexed people in the crowd murmured and pulled out their Stowe Reporters to reread the sports pages about the exciting hometown U-14 team, then headed for the restroom and the coveted snack shack.
The second period started much the same. The hometown heroes weren’t protecting goalie Ethan Brown and the uncaged Cats pushed him further and further into his own cage. Inevitably, a nice tip-in off a Bobcat defender’s slap shot from the point made it 2-0 just minutes into the second period.
The road ahead looked rough halfway through the game and Burlington had effectively taken Stowe’s home ice advantage out of play.
Then, at the eight-minute mark of the second period, Brown made a rudimentary save — then kick-passed an assist off his stick to quick-thinking Henry Paumgarten breaking out from the right hashmark. He banked a pass off the boards to a streaking Rowan Keller at the red line, who beat the chasing defenders for a breakaway goal. He snuck it in the right side as he was hooked down to make it 2-1.
One would have thought, “OK, game on,” but the Raiders went back into cruise mode and couldn’t muster any offense despite getting some chances against a solid Burlington goaltender.
All team members, offense and defense, were equally frustrated as they kept looking at “the other guy” to lend Brown a hand.
The third period started with the “big unit,” Cam Anderson, shoveling a pass up to the young wizard Paumgarten, who had suddenly found his extra gear. Seeing net all the way, he darted into close range for a shot that rebounded off the goaltender’s pads and right onto the waiting stick of Keller, who patiently deked the goalie right before tucking the puck in left. The score was now tied 2-2 only 30 seconds into the third period.
It was a new game.
Most importantly, the Raiders had pumped energy into a very supportive throng of fans. As the din grew, the Bobcats started getting off their game and looked cornered, as their usual array of penalties stalked them yet again.
With nine minutes left, Paumgarten started hunting. Taking the puck at mid-ice, he maneuvered inside the blue and did a spin-o-rama on the stunned defense for a perfect pass to Keller, who one-timed a slap shot into the net for the go-ahead 3-2 goal (and a natural hat trick).
The line bumped hands with their bench mates and circled right back to the lineup. Just six seconds later, the score would be 4-2. The ref dropped the puck at the center circle where Atticus Eiden’s draw smacked forward to Keller as he broke through the defense on a designed play.
His quick snap shot rebounded just short of the Bobcat goalie, but Paumgarten had followed to finish it off with a chip backhand shot.
That goal would become the eventual game-winner, as Burlington rapped one in with just a few seconds left in the game.
The Raiders qualified to play in the regional championships in Hooksett, N.H., March 24-26 against the best of their division in all of New England.

Stowe Winter Carnival Bantam Champs 2017
Eames Eiden and Henry Paumgarten have been playing hockey together since they could walk. In this riveting hockey game, the whole team works together--Stowe VT Raiders--to take on the Connecticut Whalers association. The feisty young centerman, Paumgarten, shows his grit by taking a pounding but pounding back with a hat trick to put away the bigger Connecticut Whaler team during Stowe's Winter Carnival hockey tournament. The whole team learned how to play a more physical game together and protect each other.
Eiden and his defensive mates (hickey, dietz and graham) meanwhile, shuts down the onslaught of the much faster and physical team as the defenseman protects his old friend from basement battles along with their Goalie Alden Huffman. The team works it well and keeps the bump and grind strategy to a whimper and coupled with Paumgarten's hat trick, his distraction tactics work as the potent offense of the whalers is shut down for most of the game.
The whole team played their role in the greatest show so far of the season. Gold medal honors boys! --Stowe Media Reviews

Dylan Conte's Backyard Vermont Trails Are Better Than Yours
I don't know why it happens but over time I think we develop monotony not only in our daily lives, but even in the things we enjoy. When I'm home from racing my days usually look similar and the riding crew and locations usually are small and local. Which, when you take a step back and think about it; is ridiculous - I live in Vermont! We have some of the best riding in the country and a whole lot of it. It's everywhere and each network has its own unique flavor and style. To me, this video perfectly encompasses and portrays that perfect sensation that is riding trail bikes in Vermont. We spent almost two weeks total throughout the summer and fall all over the state filming, building, riding, and just enjoying the place we call home. I couldn't be more excited about the finished product and hope it gets you stoked to get out and explore the trails sitting right in your backyard.
-Dylan Conte
We set out with the goal to create an all killer, no filler edit that showcases the unique terrain and riding seasons we have here in Vermont. From freshly cut loam to old school roots and rocks we shot all over the state from late June through the end of October to bring the film to life. We both feel lucky to live here in Vermont, have access to so many trail networks and be able to work on projects like this right out our back doors. Big thanks to GT Bikes, Deity Components, and MTBVT for the support! - Henry Miles

VSEA Retiree Ed Stanak Talks About Stowe Ski Resort
When talking with VSEA one day about what his union means to him, retired VSEA member Ed Stanak shared this story about an work experience he had that concerned Stowe, which is one of seven Vermont ski resorts enjoying outdated lease terms and conditions. It’s a good example of how one of these resorts tried years ago to make an end run. Who knows all that’s occurred between then and now.
Oh, Ed’s praise for his union’s help is appreciated and is another great example of the power of VSEA representation.
John Egan on Vermont's Backcountry Skiing
Steep skiing innovator and Warren Miller film star John Egan explains why he loves Vermont backcountry, how to start skiing there, what it was like to bcski in the 80s and 90s and the groups that work for conservation and ski access. Egan works for Sugarbush which has educational programs about the backcountry. I've skied from from Montana to Mongolia but Vermont will always be my home he said in 1995 when I first read about his adventures. I knew he was ideal for the Backcountry Profiles series were we meet local bcskiers in every state during the Skiing States project.

Ski Vermont Presents: The Drunk History of Skiing in Vermont
skivermont.com | Skiing history buffs credit Sun Valley with installing the first chairlift in the United States, but did you know that lift-served skiing got its true start in Vermont? The first ski lift in the US was a rope tow built by Wallace “Bunny” Bertram, and it changed Vermont skiing forever. Inspired by youtube.com/user/DrunkHistory, we poured ourselves some some stiff drinks and toasted early skiing in Vermont. | skivermont.com
