A Walk through History, Strait Street, Strada Stretta, Valletta, MALTA
Valletta Strait Street is easily the most famous street in Malta. Known as Strada Stretta in Maltese, the street was the pinnacle of nightlife amongst American and British military men and Maltese frequenters between the 19th and mid-20th century.
Strait Street represents a fascinating period of time in Malta’s history – one in which people of different nationalities and classes intermingled together in a social context. This was a new kind of multiculturalism, one that was different from previous centuries of simply being dominated by power after power. This was more integrated, more inclusive. Strait Street became a hub in which English, Italian, and Maltese could co-exist. Certainly, this level of interaction with soldiers meant that many more Maltese learnt the English language – from barmen to the Maltese ladies who pined after the foreign sailors.

Anthony Burgess, sex tourist — Valletta: The Gut
Triq Id-Dejqa (Strait Street or The Narrow Street), Valletta, Malta. Known as The Gut, this is the Maltese equivalent of Shanghai's 'Blood Alley'. Strait Street fell into decline in the early seventies. (Blood Alley ceased to function as a red-light district after the communists took over China in 1949.)
Extract from 'You've Had Your Time, Being the Second Part of the Confessions of Anthony Burgess':
'Since [Liana, Burgess's second wife] had translated Thomas Pynchon's 'V', which has Malta among its settings, she was anxious to see Strait Street, or The Gut, in Valletta, where sailors picked up girls. This place did not officially exist, any more than did the Maltese Mafia that worked in London: there was a lot of hypocrisy around...'
Extract from the Anthony Burgess novel 'Earthly Powers':
'His grace also asked me to tell you to watch your step.'
'Did, did he? I see. Highly honoured. Has his bulldogs sniffing round Strait Street, does he? Oh Jesus Lucifer Beelzebub Almighty, how I loathe and detest this bloody place.'
'You mean, I think, that there is no decent tradition of Islamic pederasty here. The whole place is dedicated to good Catholic family-making. It is also, you would say, excessively hippy and bosomy. No dirty little boys with bodies like straight sharp knives.'
'You fucking hypocrite.' He said this with little malice and followed it with a snigger. 'None of that, eh? You must accompany me to The Gut sometime, dear.'
'The Gut?'
'What the sailors call Strait Street.'
'I see, I see.'

Malta's Living Legends - The Making of the BOV Calendar 2012
Living Legends features the making of the BOV Calendar 2012.
This calendar pays tribute to some of Malta's 'old timer' musicians captured in the place that was the centre of their life: Strait Street in Valletta. Both place and people have changed... but, like us at Bank of Valletta, the love for who they are and what they do persists, no doubt thanks to tireless determination and dedication.

Strait Street, From the artistic point of view.
This video was an immersive installation which happened at strait street in Valletta. Promoting Malta/Valletta as the Capital City of Culture in 2018 and the need to revive Strait Street, to bring back Valletta's lost liveliness.
Valletta City Nights
Valletta has fast become the cultural hub of the Maltese islands. This boom in the cultural landscape of Valletta has triggered an influx of artists moving into the city, thus injecting a Bohemian spirit. It is now the place to be for people of the art world.
The infamous Strait Street, or the Gut as it was known in its time, has also enticed business owners to set up shop in the Capital. The Gut seduced a number of people in its time, with promises of unrestrained pleasures at music halls, bars and guesthouses. Once more, life has been blown into this street which now houses welcoming restaurants offering delicious food, lively bars full of cheerful patrons and quiet wine bars, perfect for a romantic night out or sharing a tasty platter with friends.
However, bars and restaurants aren’t the only things this beautiful city has to offer. Valletta provides its residents and visitors with other forms of entertainment as it has a cinema, located at the Embassy Shopping Complex; two theatres, Teatru Manol and Pjazza Teatru Rjal theatre and the Mediterranean Conference Centre; as well as live street music around Valletta. The St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity is also located within the fortified city.
There’s always something going on in the city!
