Strasburg Rail Road #90 Memorial Day 2017 steam train ride through Lancaster County, Strasburg and Ronks, Pennsylvania.
Several days worth of videos taken on a trip to Strasburg on Memorial Day weekend, 2017. The trip included a ride on the Strasburg Rail Road, and many opportunities for photos and videos as the train traveled through the Amish farmland of Lancaster County.
The star of the show is the Strasburg Rail Road’s 1924 2-10-0 steam locomotive #90, as it pulls a string of wooden passenger coaches. The landscape is seemingly endless rolling hills, covered with farms that grow corn, soy, tobacco, poultry and dairy products. The weather wasn’t the most cooperative, but the rain made for some nice shots and a generous amount of steam from the locomotive. The buildings and terrain made for some impressive echoing of the whistle, which can be heard several times in the video.
The ride begins at the yard, which houses the railroad’s shops and service towers. It pauses at where the line connects to the Amtrak mainline between Philadelphia and Chicago. Here the railroad occasionally receives modern freight cars to be delivered, as the line still offers freight service. The locomotive runs around the train and connects to the opposite end, before returning the train to the yard. The journey is approximately 45 minutes round trip.
With the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, Red Caboose Motel, National Toy Train Museum and the Choo Choo Barn all close by, the area is definitely worth the trip.

The town is often called Train Town USA because of the many railroad attractions in and around town, including the Strasburg Rail Road and the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. Much of the movie Witness was filmed on a farm nearby. Much of the borough was listed as a historic district by the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

The Strasburg Rail Road is the oldest continuously operating railroad in the western hemisphere and the oldest public utility in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Chartered in 1832, the Strasburg Rail Road continues to operate under its original charter and original name (Strasburg Rail Road Company). Located just outside of the town of Strasburg, Pennsylvania, the railroad is a heritage railroad offering excursion trains, hauled by steam locomotives, through the heart of world-famous Pennsylvania Dutch Country. Strasburg currently has five (5) serviceable historic steam locomotives (Canadian National 7312, Canadian National 89, Great Western 90, N&W 475, and Brooklyn Eastern District Terminal 15 (rebuilt as Thomas the Tank Engine)) on its roster and has the nation's largest fleet of historic wooden passenger coaches in operation. The Strasburg Rail Road is also one of the few railroads in the United States to occasionally use steam locomotives to haul revenue freight trains.
Description
Strasburg Rail Road is a shortline railroad whose construction in the 19th century was intended to connect the town of Strasburg with the main line. Today, the original 4½-mile (7.2 km) line carries passengers on a 45-minute round-trip journey from Strasburg to Leaman Place Junction through nearly 2,000 acres in south-eastern Lancaster County. The train includes the United States' only operational wooden dining car on which visitors may dine while riding. Attractions at the station include the fully operational 15 in (381 mm) gauge Pint-Sized Pufferbelly (Cagney steam-powered ridable miniature railway) a vintage pump car and several c.1930s cranky cars along with several gift shops and a cafe.
