Exploring Stratford in Taranaki - New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – Backpacker Guide New Zealand
Day 52: Today we are heading into Stratford in Taranaki to explore the town that calls itself the Shakespeare Town of New Zealand!
Yesterday - Day 51 -
Tomorrow – Day 53 –
About this video:
Today we are continuing our trip around the Taranaki region of New Zealand by checking out the town of Stratford. Stratford is famous for being the Shakespeare town of New Zealand thanks to street names after various characters from Shakespeare, as well as the Stratford Glockenspiel that does a performance four times a day.
First thing we do when we arrive in Stratford in Taranaki is check out the famous Stratford Glockenspiel for ourselves. It does a performance of Romeo and Juliet every day at 10m, 1pm, 3pm and 7pm. You can find the Stratford Glockenspiel right in the centre of Stratford.
After that, we look around a few shops and art galleries then settle in cafe in Stratford called Cafe x.o.x which is super quirky and a great way to stay out of the rain.
Finally, we check in at the Stratford Holiday Park before making our way to some walks around the Patea River including a swing bridge.
So what do you think of Stratford in Taranaki? Let us know in the comments below!

Stratford Clock Tower
Stratford Clock Tower
The American fountain/clock monument this stands in the market square on Rother Street and was donated by George W. Childs (1829 -1894), of Philadelphia, an American publisher in 1887 to mark Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. The large Gothic Clock Tower, with sculptures of eagles and lions is an imposing example of design and architecture of the period. The original tower incorporated a fountain which is now no longer functional. You will see not only American Eagles but also English Lions and a fairy from A Midsummer Night's Dream as part of the stonework. Portrayed above each clock face is a representation of a fairy inspired by Shakespeare in 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'.

Stepup Taranaki - Stratford June 5th Dance Moves
Stratford! It's your time to Step Up! These are your dance moves - show us how it's done!
Stepup Taranaki will be closing off the main road on the 5th of June and invite all of Stratford's residents, community groups, local businesses and school children to line the road and be part of this filming of Poi E.
If you are bringing children to this event it will get noisey! A large number of Taranaki's motorcyclists will be riding though Broadway. Please consider ear plugs for you and your children!
We will need to have all parked cars moved by 10.30 am along the area of Broadway that we are filming in.
Thanks to Downer NZ and Stratford District Council for helping to make this event happen!!

Descent to Canary Wharf Tube Station
This was my descent to the Jubilee line westbound platform at Canary Wharf tube station today. After looking at it, I'm thinking a more appropriate title would be 'I Need a Steadicam'
Do NOT look at this if you've got a headache or a near headache.
I was doing my best to hold the camera steady too!
What's the point to this video? There is none - it's just to show people who haven't been to London or maybe even the UK what part of my journey home is like.
Don't flame me, I know it's rubbish!
