Strauss Air Strip, Northern Territories - Remnants of WW2
Strauss Air Strip is the main air strip of the Darwin WW2 air strips. It was built in 1942 and lies along the Stuart Highway which makes it easy accessible. It is well worth a visit as there is a lot of information and remnants available. This is my experience in a short version.

Old Aircraft hanger, Darwin Australia. 1945 War damage.
Old Qantas hanger in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. This Aircraft hanger survived the air raids during WW2 and Cyclone Tracy which flattened most of Darwin in 1974. It is now used by the vintage Car club as a work shop. Original Japanese bullet holes from the air raids are still visible in the steel girders, a reminder of the trouble that went down.

Return to Anjo: revisiting Truscott, Australia's secret WWII airbase
Documentary film maker Dr David Smith and his father, searchlight operator Gordon Smith of the 67th AASL, visit RAAF Landing Ground Truscott for the 50th Anniversary of the completion of Australia’s secret World War II airbase. Truscott was a crucial departure point for heavy bombers making sorties over South-East Asia in the final months of the war. It was also critical in the defence of Australia following the extended bombing of Darwin from the 19th of February, 1942.
A grim feature of the base is the remarkably preserved wreckage of Liberator A72-160 which crashed on take-off, killing all of the crew. Pilot Frank Sismey’s wife, Enid, was pregnant at the time with their daughter, Helen. Helen Sismey, now Helen Brown, was tracked down just two weeks before the reunion and joined the more than seventy veterans and their families at the reunion in May 1994.
Remade using digital technology, Return to Anjo includes spectacular helicopter aerials and computer simulations of key events including Squadron Leader Keith ‘Bluey’ Truscott’s last flight, as well as the crashes of Liberators A72-160 and
A72-80. David and his father explore the rusty remains of the base together. Helen confronts the wreckage of the aircraft in which the father she never knew perished.

Air defence build-up in the west
The RAAF No. 5 Airfield Construction Squadron has been set the task of re-building and upgrading the old wartime air strip at Learmonth for completion later this year so that Australia's defence of the eastern Indian Ocean can be augmented by the use of Orion and Neptune aircraft from the new airfield at Exmouth Gulf in Western Australia for their surveillance patrols over Indian Ocean areas adjacent to Australia.

Batchelor, Australia and its WW2 history - including a live biplane in action
During my travels in Australia I am visiting a few sites which played intresting roles during WW2. It may not be the greatest or best known sites, but often the smaller, forgotten, hidden... Today, I am visiting the small township of Batchelor and gets to see a biplane, which is probably older than WW2, in actually flight... and a few other things.
