Kinosaki Onsen (城崎温泉) is located in northern Hyogo Prefecture on the coast of the Sea of Japan ????????. This pleasant town, built along a willow-lined river, is one of the top onsen destinations of the Kansai Region.
Hot springs ♨️were discovered in Kinosaki around the 8th century and since then the town has developed into a charmingly old-fashioned onsen town. In the evenings guests of the local ryokan stroll about town in yukata and geta (wooden clogs), visiting the numerous public baths and nostalgic game arcades.

Kinosaki may seem like your typical onsen town but it is not!
The onsens or hot springs itself are located outside the ryokans or inns. Hence, guests have to go out of the inns to enjoy the baths. The baths have unique features of their own and are located all over the little town.

The streets are lined with willow trees and look charming regardless of the seasons or time of day. During bath time, you can hear the clacking of the getas, or clogs. Visitors are also dressed in yukatas - bathrobes provided complimentary by the inns.
Here are the 7 onsens I mentioned in the video, they have certain closing days which have changed due to the closure of Mandara no Yu:
- Sato no Yu: 1 pm - 9 pm, closed Mondays
- Jizou Yu: 7 am to 11 pm, closed Fridays
- Yanagi Yu: 3 pm to 11 pm, closed Thursdays
- Ichi no Yu: 7 am to 11 pm, closed Wednesdays
- Mandara Yu (closed during visit but has reopened in December 2017): 3 pm - 11 pm, closed Wednesdays
- Gosho no Yu: 7 am to 11 pm, closed 1st & 3rd Thursdays
- Kou no Yu: 7 am to 11 pm, closed Tuesdays

Osaka & Dotonburi street - Kinosaki onsen: traditional hot spring town
First part of the video is Osaka by night, including Dotonbori before my battery died... ;)
Second part is Kinosaki, a traditional onsen (natural hot spring) town, which we visited mostly under the rain (and hail!) but was beautiful. They are well known for crab, so we had a crab themed lunch before having a relaxing hot bath in one of the many bathhouses.
At night we went back to Osaka and had the most amazing okonomiyaki I've ever had, including a Korean inspired one. :)

In some onsen resort towns, large ryokan provides everything from restaurants and entertainment to gift shops, all within the same complex. While this is convenient to the guests, the surrounding streets consequently tend to become deserted and other businesses, such as souvenir shops, has to struggle to survive.
Kinosaki has been successful in avoiding such pitfall resulting from development, however, with a policy of sharing resources and averting overdevelopment: the ryokan encourage their guests to explore the walkable town, promote other local businesses and offer their guests tickets for free admission to the public baths.
