Best Apple Pies - Virginia Farm Market in Winchester, Virginia
I know that calling their apple pies the best is a rather bold statement but they really are amazing and the best I’ve had – not to mention their other pies, cookies, donuts, and other baked goods! Apples aren’t too bad either!! :) I just discovered this place recently even though I had been driving within 5 minutes of it for years! I so wish I had discovered it much sooner -- though, as far as my waistline goes, maybe it’s a good thing I didn’t! According to a sign in Winchester, Virginia, they are the “Apple Capital of the World.” I’m not quite sure about that, but Virginia is the 6th largest apple producer in the United States (FYI, the USA is the world’s 2nd largest apple producer, behind China), and I am guessing that the majority of those Virginia apples are grown in the Winchester area. The Virginia Farm Market has a zillion varieties of apples, in addition to all their awesome pies, cookies, etc. But they are also just a mecca for all things Virginia, from hams and peanuts to Rte. 11 potato chips and homemade jams and fudge. I love this place and am now visiting every Sunday when I’m in Virginia. They will be open until December 8th and then close for the winter, reopening on April 15th. Now, what better way to celebrate Tax Day than with an apple pie from here!!
Meet Your Neighbor...Orr Apple Orchards
Orr Orchards is a family owned and operated farm located in Martinsburg, West Virginia. Started in 1954 by George S. Orr, Jr. on a 60 acre orchard on the east side of North Mountain, Orr Orchards has grown to well over 1,000 acres producing over a half million bushels of fruit annually. George's legacy of determination, innovation, and competition still carries on today and Orr's has diversified into specialty crops, a pick-your-own operation, and agrotourism events and activities. The family farm's premium fruits are grown using the utmost care by Mark orr, now the owner and orchard manager. The fruits are all carefully harvested by hand and then stored on the farm for packing and shipping to your local Harris Teeter and you.

Apple Orchard Mountain - Jefferson National Forest, VA
A peakbagging hike on June 30 in Jefferson National Forest, Virginia, doing two hikes from Petites Gap off of the Blue Ridge Parkway. First I hiked north on the Appalachian Trail to quickly bag Highcock Knob, the highest peak in the James River Face Wilderness at 3,073 feet. Returning to Petites Gap I picked up my gear and hiked south on the AT into the Thunder Ridge Wilderness. The trail passes by the Thunder Ridge Overlook, which provides a cool view of Devils Marbleyard to the northwest. Next I passed by the Thunder Hill Shelter, which had a bear locker and a bunch of nice, grassy campsites.
The final climb up to Apple Orchard Mountain becomes rocky, passing through a well-known landmark called The Guillotine. The summit of Apple Orchard Mountain is a cleared meadow with an FAA Radome station and decent views over the treeline to the west. The true summit is hidden amongst trees in a large boulder cluster and has a good view south of the Peaks of Otter. Apple Orchard Mountain is the highest peak in the Virginia Blue Ridge Escarpment (4,225 feet) and is also the most prominent peak in Virginia (2,825 feet). This is the highest elevation thru hikers cross until they reach Mount Moosilauke, NH. (The AT does not pass directly over Killington Peak, VT.) I also bagged the high point of the Thunder Ridge Wilderness off the side of Apple Orchard, approximately 200 feet from the road in the middle of waist-high nettle and poison ivy. Not really worth it! Considering the mileage and elevation gain this is a surprisingly easy hike. By the way, those aren't spots on my camera. There were an insane amount of gnats and flies following me around Apple Orchard forcing me to ditch my planned snack break.
By the way, I did film a long segment afterwards of my hiking gear. But it was consistently too jerky and I didn't feel like I should include it. One of these days I'll do an updated day hiking gear video.
Hike was 14.6 miles with 3,801 feet elevation gain in 6 hours and 30 minutes.

Apple Orchard Falls, Virginia, Rainy Day Hike
Apple Orchard Falls is a 200 foot waterfall located along North Creek, on the western slope of Apple Orchard Mountain, in the Jefferson National Forest of Botetourt County, in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. This is one of the most popular hikes in the area. It is a moderate climb with spectacular creek views, numerous cascades and small waterfalls, cool rock formations, and of course the main falls.
There are several ways to access Apple Orchard Falls, and combining the Falls trail with forestry roads and other trails also allows one to complete a loop hike. Due to time and the hazardous weather conditions on the day of my visit, I opted to only hike up to the main falls and then return via the same route. Thanks for watching!
