Stromboli is a small island in the Tyrrhenian Sea, off the north coast of Sicily, containing one of the three active volcanoes in Italy. It is one of the eight Aeolian Islands, a volcanic arc north of Sicily. This name is a corruption of the Ancient Greek name Strongule which was given to it because of its round swelling form. The island's population is between 400 and 850. The volcano has erupted many times, and is constantly active with minor eruptions, often visible from many points on the island and from the surrounding sea, giving rise to the island's nickname Lighthouse of the Mediterranean. The last major eruption was on April 13, 2009. Stromboli stands 926 m (3,034 ft) above sea level, but actually rises over 2,000 m (6,500 ft) above the sea floor. There are three active craters at the peak. A significant geological feature of the volcano is the Sciara del Fuoco (Stream of fire), a big horseshoe-shaped depression generated in the last 13,000 years by several collapses on the northwestern side of the cone. Two kilometres to the northeast lies Strombolicchio, the volcanic plug remnant of the original volcano. Mt. Stromboli has been in almost continuous eruption for the past 2,000 years. A pattern of eruption is maintained in which explosions occur at the summit craters, with mild to moderate eruptions of incandescent volcanic bombs, at intervals ranging from minutes to hours. This Strombolian eruption, as it is known, is also observed at other volcanoes worldwide. Eruptions from the summit craters typically result in a few short, mild, but energetic bursts, ranging up to a few hundred meters in height, containing ash, incandescent lava fragments and stone blocks. Mt. Stromboli's activity is almost exclusively explosive, but lava flows do occur at times when volcanic activity is high: an effusive eruption occurred in 2002, the first in 17 years, and again in 2003, 2007, and 2013-14.
The two villages San Bartolo and San Vincenzo lie in the northeast while the smaller village Ginostra lies in the southwest. Administratively, they are one of the frazione of Lipari. In the early 1900s a few thousand people inhabited the island, but after several emigrations the population numbered a few hundred by the mid-1950s. Jules Verne set Stromboli in the conclusion of the novel Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864). According to Clyde S. Kilby the following is the case. Mordor was unique because of the three enormous mountain ranges surrounding it, from the north, from the west and from the south. The mountains both protected the land from an unexpected invasion by any of the people living in those directions and kept those living in Mordor from escaping. Tolkien was reported to have identified Mordor with the volcano of Stromboli off Sicily. Stated like this Mordor and Mount Doom appear to be symbols for Sicily.

The island of Stromboli sits just north of the eastern coast of Sicily. It was the first active volcano in Europe we climbed and flew around. Throughout the day, you hear the rumbling of the volcanic process and see the sulfuric clouds emanating from within. It is a welcoming, spectacular place. The little island you see in the beginning is Strombolicchio, just off the coast. The last minute of the video shows some of the eruptions we captured from the top and at sea.

Stromboli - The Black Island - Aeolian Islands
Stromboli, Aeolian Islands, Italy. This is the northern among the seven islands of the archipelago, almost two hours of hydrofoil from the Sicilian port of Milazzo. Stromboli is over the world famous for its turbulent volcano, permanently erupting with a typical explosive activity.
But Stromboli is not only its volcano. A luxuriant Nature stand out from lava black stone as a dominant background colour. Everywhere the land is black, as the cobblestone and sandy beaches, the rocky cliffs and the volcano itself. In spring and summer brooms paint of yellow the hillsides of the mountain, giving the island its typical aspect.
Inhabited since the prehistorical eve, Stromboli has two settlements. The main, southward, is the terminal of connecting lines with motherland Sicily. It is a nice village built around the S. Vincenzo church on a flat terrace facing the sea. No cars admitted, the only means of transport are little electric vehicles or scooters. No public lights on the alleys so when the night falls, an incredible starry sky is just over your head.
The other settlement is Ginostra, a minimal out of time village on the other side of the island, mostly attainable by boat, with probably the smallest harbour of the world. Electricity there is a recent conquest. Overnight in Ginostra is a unique experience to feel the vibes of the island.
Beautiful wildlife and seaside, nice villages, a delicious gastronomy featured by local products are all excellent reasons to visit the island and to stay some days. But the main attraction remains the hike to the top of the volcano, so that Stromboli is well known among trekkers.
To climb the volcano is a tough walk from sea level to 900 meters of altitude. The steep ascent takes three hours at least to reach the peak and, especially late in spring and summer, there is a crazy temperature gradient from very hot at the beginning to quite cold and windy just in the end. If you are lucky you may admire some explosions from the main crater. Usually Stromboli erupt almost once per hour.
Of course there are some dangers cause the ridge is narrow and there is not much place to stand and volcanic activity is unpredictable. For this reason, independently trekking is strictly forbidden. To climb over Stromboli you must follow an official guide. You can join a group contacting the two local providers. Front offices are in the main square near the church.
Don’t take the hike lightly, it is not technically difficult but is absolutely tiresome!
This film is the result of a journey in June 2015 focused around the climb on the Stromboli. Extemporaneous footage with a light Canon Legria is the only document I have of that experience. Quality is poor but real life is guaranteed.

Stromboli volcano eruption in Italy (July 3, 2019)
A volcano on the Italian island of Stromboli has erupted, killing a hiker, throwing ash high into the sky and enveloping the popular tourist destination in smoke.
Rescue services said Wednesday’s eruption on Mount Stromboli had started fires on the western side of the small Mediterranean island north of Sicily. Fire crews were being called in from nearby locations and a Canadair firefighting plane was already in action.
One tourist who was hiking on the volcano was killed and another injured, local firefighters confirmed.
Tourists often climb to the 924-metre (3,031ft) summit of the volcano and peer into its crater, from which small lumps of molten rock are regularly blasted into the sky.
