Sweden: Stockholm Archipelago Historic All Day Boat Tour
Sweden: Stockholm Archipelago Historic All Day Boat Tour
On our third day in Stockholm we took the 1000 Islands cruise of the archipelago with Stromma, a company that offers a bunch of different tours around Stockholm. Our trip lasted 11 hours and were served a delicious lunch, fika, and dinner. We stopped at three different islands throughout the day with an optional tour at each one in both English and Swedish. The boat was a restored cruiser built in 1908 with lots of great wood and brass detailing. While you can get to some of the places we went via the ferry system, it's much more efficient to go on a cruise. We all had a great time learning about the the Baltic Sea and the history of the islands. The weather held off until the very last half hour when the rain finally started. It was a great and different adventure.

Stockholm archipelago travel facts:
- Boats for the archipelago depart regularly from multiple locations in central Stockholm. The main quays are Strömkajen (between the Old Town and Skeppsholmen) and Nybrokajen (outside of the Royal Theater).
- Waxholmsbolaget ( and Strömma ( are the main companies operating boats. Generally, Waxholm offers a broader range of boat trips to a large number of islands, while Strömma offers excursions and dining cruises to select destinations.
- Travel time ranges from 30 minutes to several hours depending on your destination. There are a number of islands reachable within 1-3 hours, meaning it’s easy to take a day trip. The boat ride itself is part of the experience - look forward to gorgeous views and maybe even spotting a seal or two!
- Visit Stockholm has an extensive guide to the islands of the archipelago: Some popular ones are Grinda, Möja, Utö, Nämdö and Sandhamn. The island seen in this video is Gällnö.
- Don’t want to take a boat? You can reach a number of islands through public transportation in Stockholm (sl.se). Try Vaxholm, known as the capital of the archipelago, Dalarö, or Värmdö (amongst many more)!

Royal Canal Tour in Stockholm - Sweden 4K Travel Channel
The Royal Canal tour leads around the island of Djurgarden through the green Stockholm. It starts at the Strömkajen on the peninsula Blasieholmen, east of Kungsträdgarden. Here was once the island Käpplingen. But it got connected to Norrmalm in the 17th century and became the peninsula Blasieholmen.
We pass the National Museum and the museum quay. Some of the ships here were restored true to the original and are partly still driven by steam-driven engines.
Past the Royal Dramatic Theater, we reach the most fashionable residential area of Stockholm, the district of Östermalm. The boulevard Strandvägen with its chic buildings is the first address for famous personalities such as Björn Borg, or Per Gessle, the singer of Roxette.
On the right is the island of Djurgarden. Djurgarden is almost 4 km long and 1 km wide.
Djurgarden is the Swedish word for a game park. Until 1809, it was the royal hunting ground. Today, it belongs to the only National City Park in Sweden founded in 1995.
The Djurgården canal forms the northern border of the island. The canal opened in 1834 after a 10-year construction period. Before this, this was a natural waterway, which silted up by the Scandinavian postglacial rebound. Then King Charles XIV erected this canal.
On the island of Djurgarden is the open-air museum Skansen. It is the oldest open-air museum in the world and the only one which is home to wild animals.
But Djurgarden is also home to the Vasa Museum, the Abba Museum, the Nordic Museum and not to forget Junibacken. The Museum Junibacken is dedicated to Swedish children's literature, especially those of Astrid Lindgren.
There are also amusement parks such as Gröner Lund, a Circus, guest houses, villas, and pleasure palaces.
Our excursion boat circumnavigates the island so that we can gain a good impression not only from the canal but also from Stockholm harbor. The gigantic cruise liners and ferries fascinate us again and again.
Passing the old town of Gamla Stan with the royal castle, the Royal Canal Tour ends again at Strömkajen.

Under the Bridges of Stockholm - Sweden 4K Travel Channel
Under the bridges of Stockholm, Swedish: Under Stockholms Broar, that is the name of one of the many sightseeing tours by boat in and around Stockholm. The starting point of the boat tour is the Strökajen in the section next to the Strombron bridge. A little further to the east, the Stromkajen goes passed the Grand Hotel, one of Stockholm's landmarks.
The mirror hall of the Grand Hotel was the venue for the Nobel banquets from the very beginning in 1901, up to 1929. After the event became too big, the Nobel banquet moved to the town hall, where it still takes place today. But the award winners with their families lodge at the Grand Hotel.
A small episode on the edge: The Grand Hotel was also the first hotel in Stockholm, where the bed linen was changed when new guests arrived.
The adjacent building with the sign of the Royal Automobile Club KAK on the roof is the so-called Bolinderska palatset. Built from 1874 to 1877 by order of the industrialist Jean Bolinder from Stockholm, it is today part of the Grand Hotel.
We chose a sunny Wednesday in July for our boat trip. Blue skies and the sunshine show the panorama of the city from its most beautiful side.
First, we sail around the Blasieholmen peninsula and we make another short stop at Nybroplan to pick up further passengers.
Then the boat leaves the inner harbor between the museum islands of Skeppsholmen and Djurgarden. Djurgarden is the only national park in the world that lies within a city. We also pass by the impressive Vasa Museum.
Then the boat steed toward the island of Södermalm. Södermalm was the backdrop for a series of scenes from the Stieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy.
We circle around the Viking Line pier and turn into the Danvik Canal. Afterward, we cross the Danviksbro, a drawbridge, which also allows the passage for sailing ships with a high mast. Actually, there are 2 bridges, one for the train and one for the motor traffic.

One of the city’s charms is that everywhere you look there are mesmerizing bodies of water, so we didn’t want to leave without taking in the views from this perspective.
In one day we enjoyed two delightful options. This included a quick trip out to the archipelago to the Fjäderholmarna islands (a mere few of the area’s thousands of pristine islands).
Also a more localised tour (linked with the hop-on-hop-off coach tour) which presented views of the Old Town (Gamla Stan), Nordic Museum and Vasa Museum, Gröna Lund (Stockholm’s amusement park that’s lit up the waterfront since 1883) and all of the city’s steeples and colourful buildings in a way that’s impossible to experience on land.
