The Strossmayer promenade
Funnily named Strossmartre this promenade on the former city walls is bursting with energy in the summer. During the day this is a lively place of an artistic colony, various children activities, fashion shows and even a mixed-breed dog peagent. A fun place indeed!
Zagreb In Your Pocket - Strossmayer Promenade (Strossmayerovo šetalište)
In the middle ground between Donji and Gornji Grad, this is a place to rediscover peace, love, harmony and why you've never liked bombs or ammunition in general. A sculpture of Antun Gustav Matoš beckons you to sit next to him.

Zagreb In Your Pocket editor Kristina Kovač tours Zagreb, the capital of Croatia. From the train station on King Tomislav Square (Trg kralja Tomislava) along the Green Horseshoe (Zelena potkova) to the central square Count Jelačić Square (Trg bana Josipa Jelačića). From the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary across the Central Market Dolac to Tkalčićeva street, through the Oktogon to Flower Square (Cvijetni trg Petra Preradovića). With the funicular up to the Upper Town (Gornij Grad) and a relaxing walk along Strossmayer Promenade (Strossmayerovo šetalište) before the big bang from the canon on Lotrščak Tower (Kula Lotrščak). Further and deeper into the upper town past the political heart of the country with the government and parliament buildings surrounding St. Mark's Church (Crkva sv. Marka) with its much photographed tiled roof. Down through the Stone Gate (Kamenita vrata) before the lamplighter turns on the gas lights in the Old Town.

Zagreb In Your Pocket - Jelačić Square (Trg bana Josipa Jelačića)
Count Jelacic Square (Trg bana Josipa Jelačića) is an Austro-Hungarian styled square and the true centre of the city. There's a phenomenal variety of cafés, shopping, feeding and people watching everywhere. It was named after the impressive sculpture within its domain, that of Count Jelačić, his deadly steed, and a sword so pointy and sharp that it could poke your eye out. Our count's image has inspired a number of political outbursts: in 1947 it was dismantled and chucked into a corner somewhere because leaders found it overly representative of nationalism in the country. The year 1990 brought it back into its current place, this time leaders believing it perfectly nationalistic.

The funicular runs on 1200 mm gauge rails, track length is only 66 m, but height difference is 30.5 m and inclination 52%. This makes it one of the shortest, but also one of the steepest funiculars in the world. It runs at a speed of 1.5 m/s, needing 55 seconds to cross the distance.

Eran & Shira The Travellers - Arrtactions In Zagreb, Croatia -
