a brief look at some of the recent achievements in restoration, in particular the involvement of other community groups, and very much the individual stories of volunteers.
The finale is a snapshot of the four mile section of as yet unrestored canal which will rejoin this to the national network.
This film was premiered at a Cotswold Canals Trust fundraising event on 19th November 2018 to a packed house at Whitminster Village Hall, where the programme of films opened with a special screening of two waterway films generously provided by Huddersfield Film Makers.
Near the end of the film there is an image of Bristol Road lock (at 20.40), with the unusual siting (for the Stroudwater Navigation) of its ground paddles, and in the background is the former Ryde's bridge.

A Visit To Stroud In The Cotswolds, England
On this trip we visit the old market town of Stroud, Gloucestershire. Stroud sits on the western side of The Cotswolds.
We combined our visit to Stroud with a stay at the Five Valleys ApartHotel by Michael Paul Holidays. The name comes from the meeting point of the Five Valleys of the Cotswolds Hills. All the rooms at the Five Valleys ApartHotel have been recently refurbished.
From the Five Valleys ApartHotel it is a 15 mins walk along the pretty canal towpath ‘Stroudwater Navigation’ to the town centre. The canal as we see it today was built between 1775 and 1779.
We were there on the weekend and every Saturday morning there is the award-winning weekly Stroud Farmers’ Market which features lots of unique products and plenty of tastings.
We also took a short drive to Coaley Peak which has breathtaking views of the Severn Valley. Coaley Peak is on the Cotswold Way National Trail. The Cotswold Way is a 100 mile walk along the Cotswold escarpment.

Canal Cruises: Stroudwater Navigation - Dudbridge to Wallbridge
February 2018. Maybe not the best time of year for it, but this is actually the busiest this section of canal has been in a long time. We actually had to wait for four other boats to pass through the Dudbridge locks before we went up.
This recording takes place on 03/02/2018, the day after His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales, officially opened Wallbridge Lower lock and the first restored section of the Thames & Severn canal.
Steam on Stroudwater Navigation - COTSWOLD CANALS - June 2015
Saturday 27th June 2015:
Six immaculate and elegant steam boats, owned by members of the Steam Boat Association of Great Britain, launch at Strachan's Close, for a day trip to Stonehouse and return.
Warm sunshine, steam whistles and polished brasswork made this a real day for letting off steam on the Stroudwater.
A gathering crowd of towpath users followed the colourful flotilla as it locked down through Foundry lock and Dudbridge lock.
At the new canalside wharf development in Ebley, an even larger crowd was already waiting. After taking local refreshments, or brewing up tea on board, the boats assembled to then move off westward in convoy.
The new businesses and cafes in Ebley welcomed the surge of customers, as did the Cotswold Canals Trust new trip boat ENDEAVOUR.
This section of restored waterway forms part of phase 1a of restoration of the Cotswold canals.

Cotswold Canals Restoration Project, UK - 2012
Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal made a visit to the town of Stroud in Gloucestershire on a snowy February morning, to formally open Stroud Brewery Bridge and the newly refurbished Wallbridge Upper Lock.
The new bridge and lock refurbishment are a small part of a major project to restore the Cotswold Canals. The canals consist of two connected Gloucestershire waterways -- the Stroudwater Navigation and The Thames and Severn Canal. Once restored, this 36-mile long waterway will reconnect England's greatest rivers -- The Severn and The Thames -- for the first time in over seventy years.

Stroudwater Navigation - Pike Lock restoration update 2015
Stroudwater Navigation, Pike lock, Eastington
Pike lock Bridge was destroyed in 1970 by road scheme improvements, and Pike Lock was infilled and the towpath, which changes sides here, was blocked.
Restoration work began in 1990, and in 1992 HRH The Prince of wales visited the site.
A new road bridge, incorporating as much of the original bridge abutments, was completed in 2005.
The towpath is maintained to a good standard by volunteers of the Cotswold Canals Trust, and is part of the Thames & Severn Way.
There is a slipway for light craft, and picnic benches here are well used.
Above this lock are the fully restored Blunder Lock and Newtown lock. Dock lock is a short distance west of here, and has undergone excavation of infill and initial structural repairs.

Cotswold Canals - Visions of the past and future - Arundel aqueduct to Bowbridge
July 2017: restoration update at Bowbridge
Dr Val Kirby reviews the unblocking and restoration of Bowbridge bridge, which has been a massive project, and speaks about the reopened and resurfaced towpath and the restored Bowbridge lock.
Stroud District Council is Lead partner in the Cotswold Canals partnership, and the work here is a wonderful example of professional contractors, volunteers and local Council achieving a beautiful result.
For the first time since the 1960s, the towpath goes under the bridge.
The Thames & Severn Canal changes to the southern side of the valley at Arundel aqueduct as it heads east from Stroud.
The historic Arundel Mill pond is close to the canal here, and you will find an interpretation panel and bench seating on this section of towpath.
In the early days of navigation on this canal, donkeys and men would have been the main means of haulage, plus hoisting the square sail of a Severn Trow whenever possible on long sections, to take advantage of the prevailing west wind.
The Thames & Severn Canal Co. had already learnt from the Stroudwater Navigation that the towpath was intrinsic to the efficient operation of the canal, and needed to be built at the same time as the waterway.
(Use of sail on the adjoining Stroudwater Navigation was specifically prohibited in or approaching locks. ( and where there was a 5 shillings (25p) fine for using two animals abreast.)
At the time of construction of the Thames & Severn canal, the local road system comprised largely of muddy cart tracks, which generally crossed the valley in a series of zig-zags to join hillside settlements and farms to water mills along the course of the river Frome, but which did not provide a simple direct route even between Stroud and Brimscombe. The canal enabled large laden craft often carrying up to 70 tons of freight in half the time taken by horse and cart transport.
Records show that Imports of coal and timber from the Midlands coalfield and Staffordshire, plus that from the Forest of Dean and South Wales, brought prosperity and stimulated the growth of industry in the area.
Wheras engineering products had been imported to the area (such as the 1803 Boulton and Watt engine delivered to Framilode (for the tin slitting mill at Upper Framilode in 1803, and the beam engine for the T&S Co's Thames Head pumping station), within a century locally made compressors and gas and stationary steam engines were being exported down the canal. Two boatyards built large powered vessels, including the tunnel tugs for the Worcester & Birmingham canal, and many craft were for overseas exports.
An example of the gas engines manufactured at the Phoenix Ironworks (Thrupp) is now proudly displayed in Stroud shopping centre.

Frome River (Stroudwater)
This video I made with my husband. this past year in 2010. It was originally uploaded onto his youtube account.
This is what he wrote about it when he uploaded it:
All shot on a Canon 5D DSLR. Crank the quality up to 1080p to see what it can do. Edited with OpenShot.
The Frome emerges in Climperwell and Syde, goes down Miserden Park through deep valleys and around Sapperton before going past all the mills in the Stroud valley. After Stroud it passes a few more mills, splits in two along the flood plain and joins back together at the last mill, Fromebridge Mill. Then it dives under the Sharpness Canal and empties into the Severn River at Framilode.
