Coober Pedy Australia (2011).
Coober Pedy is a town in northern South Australia, 846 kilometres north of Adelaide on the Stuart Highway. According to the 2011 census, its population was 1,695 (953 males, 742 females, including 275 indigenous Australians).[1] The town is sometimes referred to as the opal capital of the world because of the quantity of precious opals that are mined there. Coober Pedy is renowned for its below-ground residences, called dugouts, which are built in this fashion due to the scorching daytime heat. The name Coober Pedy comes from the local Aboriginal term kupa-piti, which means white man's hole.[2]
Opal was found in Coober Pedy on 1 February 1915; since then the town has been supplying most of the world's gem-quality opal. Coober Pedy today relies as much on tourism as the opal mining industry to provide the community with employment and sustainability. Coober Pedy has over seventy opal fields and is the largest opal mining area in the world.

Details:-
Today we will be showing you Old Timers Mine which is located in Coober Pedy, South Australia.
As the name suggests this is an old mine which is not operational now. Opal was first discovered in this area in 1915. In 1916, O'Neil brothers, James and Richard started mining for opal here. The brothers stayed for about 5 years and made a fortune. Mining was stopped here in 1989, and is currently converted into a museum.
Please watch the video for more details.
Getting to Coober Pedy:-
By Car:
From Adelaide, the journey takes approximately 8-10 hours and 6-8 hours from Alice Springs.
Please be aware that, when venturing off the highway, roads are unsealed and often impassable after heavy rain so please check weather forecasts and road conditions before you travel.
By Air:
Daily flight from Adelaide.
By Train:
The Ghan stops at Manguri, 40km West of Coober Pedy, allowing passengers to disembark (November to March), transport from the rail siding to Coober Pedy must be specially arranged. Since 2015, The Ghan is also offering day tours (March to October) into Coober Pedy as part of a travel package.
Information:-
Climate
o Between March and November, the weather is very pleasant. Typical of a semi-desert climate, the days are warm but the desert nights are cold. From December to February, the weather warms up and summer temperatures range upwards from 35ºC in the shade.
o The annual rainfall is minimal, at around 175mm (5 inches) per annum, so summer dust storms can occur.

Australia: Adelaide to Coober Pedy bus tour; September 2011
Doug and Ellen took a bus tour in Australia, from Adelaide to Alice Springs. The first segment of the tour went from Adelaide to Coober Pedy, the opal capital of the world, and included stops in Melrose (the shortest and lowest hanging bridge in the world?), Quorn, Warren Gorge (home of the rare Yellow-legged Wallaby), the Flinders Range and Flinders National Park, Kanyaka Homestead ruins, the gravesite of famed rancher Hugh Proby and Lake Hart (a salt lake). Along the way we saw birds, kangaroos, wallabies, emus, strange lizards, beautiful wildflowers and other exotic flora. Extreme Town Coober Pedy

Explore Coober Pedy: An Australian town that lives underground
#GLAadventure team reaches Cooper Pedy which is known for two things - Opal and Underground Homes. Here most of the houses are underground including the hotel. These homes are called dugouts and the houses are fashioned in such a way due to scorching temperature during day time. This underground town was established in 1915 following the discovery of opal there. It's interesting to know that ninety five per cent of the world's opal comes from this area.
