The Studenica Monastery is the principle monastery, or mother church, in the Serbian Orthodox order.
In the 12th century the ruler of this Serbian state relinquished his thrown, founded the monastery, and lived much of the remainder of his life within its walls.
Studenica was once the religious, cultural, and political center of medieval Serbia, making it an exceptionally important monument.
The monastery houses an incredible collection of Byzantine-style frescoes and paintings from as far back as the 13th century.
The complex includes two white marble churches one of the Virgin and one of the King.
The churches here are built in the Raska School style, which combines elements from Romanesque and Byzantine architecture.

The monastery Studenica, dedicated to the Presentation of the Holy Virgin, is the mother-church of all Serbian temples. It was constructed over a quite long period of time. The first stage of works were completed by the spring of 1196, when Stefan Nemanja abdicated and took monastic vows at the monastery. When he later left for Hilandar, his son and successor Stefan took over the care of Studenica. Nemanja died in Hilandar in 1199. Nemanja's third son Rastko (Saint Sava), after reconciling with his brothers Stefan and Vukan, moved Nemanja's relics to Studenica. Under guardianship of Sava, Studenica became the political, cultural and spiritual center of ´medieval Serbia. Among his other endeavors, Sava composed the Studenica Typikon, a liturgical book of orders where he described the life of Saint Simeon (Nemanja), leaving evidence of the spiritual and monastic life of his time.
Studenica enjoyed continual care by the members of the Nemanjić dynasty. King Radoslav added a splendid narthex to the church in 1235. King Milutin built a small but lovely church dedicated to saints Joachim and Anna.
Since the fall of the last of the medieval Serbian states in 1459, the Turks often assaulted the monastery. The first of the significant restorations of the damage took place in 1569, when the frescoes in the Church of the Virgin were repainted. In the early 17th century, an earthquake and a fire befell the monastery, and historical documents and a significant part of the artistic heritage were destroyed and lost forever.

The most beautiful Serbian Monasteries and Churches
Unique in their architecture, sculpture and ornamentation, frescoes, icons, manuscripts and numerous works of applied art, the monasteries of Serbia have long been a focus of attention for tourists and mediaeval art experts alike.
The architecture of mediaeval Serbian monasteries is particularly varied. During the 13thand into the 14thcentury some of the most striking churches were built, whose proportions and decorative façade and sculptural work suggest Romanesque influence (Studenica, Banjska, Dečani, Gradac, Arilje, Mileševa, Sopoćani and others). These are referred to as belonging to the Raška School. The first half of the 14thcentury during the reign of King Milutin saw the construction of works of exceptional architecture and artwork, such as Gračanica.
The period after 1371 saw the rise of a characteristic architectural style called the Morava School in the Morava river valley, with its multicoloured façades and decorative relief work, (e.g. Ravanica, Lazarica, Ljubostinja and Kalenić).
Mediaeval monasteries and churches are not just features on the landscape of Serbia, they are features of the soul of Serbia, as well as being art galleries in a very real sense. The frescoes and icons in Serbia’s churches are a significant part of Serbia’s cultural, historical and national wealth.
One of the greatest Serbian Orthodox holy places is Hilandar, a Serbian monastery located on the northern part of the ‘Holy Mountain’ of Mount Athos –a‘monastic republic’ formed of 20 major monasteries, situated on the third leg of the Halkidiki peninsula in northern Greece. The monastery of Hilandar was built by Stefan Nemanja and his sons, the monk Sava and Stefan Prvovenčani (‘the First-Crowned’) in 1198......
