Market Day in Lancaster ... Lancashire ... England
I went out with my camera during a bright and sunny market day and took these shots for my photo video.
My thanks to the shoppers and stall holders who gave their permission for the individual shots to be taken.
I chose to play 'Fly Me to the Moon' as background music... don't ask me why... maybe it was because it was such a clear day with not a cloud in sight that prompted my choice in music... I don't know?

The Three Mariners Pub in Lancaster, UK.
This historic Lancaster pub is one of the oldest in the UK. It has a reputation for being inhabited by ghosts and poltergeists - it was even the subject of an episode of Most Haunted. It is also one of a very few pubs with an original cellar upstairs - the spring waters seep through the foundation of the Lancaster Castle above and keep the cask beers nicely cool all year round.

Nauticalia First Shop in the world
Nauticalia began in 1974, as a floating marine antiques shop in a converted rubbish barge on the River Thames at Shepperton. Lynn Lewis, an ex-BBC television reporter, and his wife Val, also a journalist, were the founders.
As the business developed, it became obvious that there were not enough antiques to satisfy demand, especially for the large items of nautical décor that so enthralled their customers. An advert in the local paper, for a 19th century diver's helmet, brought six buyers the next day - but there was only one for sale! To solve the problem, Lynn commissioned a batch of ten detailed replicas from a specialist metal works, and thus began Nauticalia's famous range of reproduction boating and shipping memorabilia.
Ship's telegraphs, binnacles, bells, bosun's whistles, brass information signs and anchor lamps soon followed the same course, and necessitated a move to larger premises ashore. Not, however, before Lynn had managed to lose several tools over the side of the barge whilst making repairs, and invented one of the company's best-known products, the Sea Searcher recovery magnet, to get them back. Today the powerful magnet, which has been in continuous production ever since, is used by emergency services, boat owners and even sewage system workers worldwide. Over half a million have been sold!
More than 30 years on, the range has developed from using only the classic marine materials of teak, brass, hemp and cork to include everything from anchor-shaped doorknockers to zoom-focus binoculars. Lynn's principle was If it traditionally comes from a ship, which generally means it's been built to last, let's reproduce it. If the ship's cat walks down the gangplank, let's copy it. Nauticalia did - producing models of ships' cats which figured in famous nautical incidents, from the cat on Noah's Ark to the moggy that Shackleton took to the Antarctic. The ships' cats, made from discarded rabbit pelts and crafted by artists in China, have become Nauticalia's most popular product ever.
Now, with Lynn's son-in-law Chris Murdoch at the helm, Nauticalia continues to mix traditional nautical replicas with modern boating accessories in a huge range that celebrates Britain's maritime heritage - all under the umbrella of Ships & Sea... Time & Tide... Wind & Weather... Stars & Skies.
In the UK, Nauticalia have 8 own-brand shops and literally hundreds of stockists - everywhere from maritime museums to seaside bucket-and-spade shops - who buy from the wholesaling part of the company.
Exports, spreading British maritime heritage to the world, account for about a quarter of all sales, and Nauticalia was a proud recipient of the Queen's Award for Exports in 1998.
How to Apply Decals to a Model
I get great results using this method; hopefully you will too!
Good results can still be obtained without decal solution, but I'd recommend getting some.
Watered-down PVA glue may need TWO coats to get a smooth enough finish, and remember you can also use another coat of it to seal the decals afterwards.

Annette Carruthers: The Arts and Crafts Movement in Scotland
In our latest Edinburgh Reads video Annette Carruthers talks to Hil Williamson about her book The Arts and Crafts Movement in Scotland.
Annette discusses the history of the Arts and Crafts Movement in Scotland from its early appearance in the 1860s to its heyday from 1890 to 1914, a time when Scotland's art schools promoted new design and the Scottish Home Industries Association campaigned to revive rural crafts, shaping the look of domestic and ecclesiatical buildings, stained glass, furnishings, metalwork, and textiles.
In this interesting discussion Annette talks about her research and conception of the book, the social and political aspects of the movement in Scotland and the influence of art schools.

Simon Allford: “Constructing the Idea: The Essential and the ExtraOrdinary”
Simon Allford of Allford Hall Monaghan Morris (AHMM) will set out the ideas that have driven his practice’s approach to constructing ideas in architecture. Since its inception in the early 1980s, the practice, founded immediately after the partners completed their diplomas at the Bartlett School of Architecture, has grown from four founders to 400 people researching and constructing projects that test ideas through building.
Allford works for public and private sector clients on a wide range of projects of very different scales (and types), and the examination of their successes (and failures!) in use has reinforced his student thesis and led him to eschew the conventions of specialization. Through this work he has developed the polemic for The Universal Building and an architectural take on the theory of convergence.
Allford is currently working on large-scale buildings and collections of buildings in London, across England and in Amsterdam, Bratislava, Prague, Berlin, India, and America. The current programs for this collection includes cultural, commercial, residential, and academic facilities.
Allford will focus his talk on the ideas that underpin the practice's thinking; how these has been made manifest in a series of built projects; and how these ideas continue to evolve and inform the next collection of projects.

The Story of Joe the Quilter's Cottage
The Tynedale cottage of murdered Joseph Hedley, better known as “Joe the Quilter”, is set to be replicated at Beamish Museum as part of the £17million Remaking Beamish project.
Beamish and members of the community carried out an exciting archaeological dig at the site of Joe’s home that revealed some interesting finds, including a silver groat, an engraved metal plate and animal bone buttons.
The museum and members of the community found the remains of Joe’s cottage, which was demolished in 1872, using old maps and descriptions of the crime.
John Castling, Remaking Beamish Project Officer (Research & Design), said: “As archaeologists it’s extremely rare to be working on a site inhabited by a named individual about whom we know so much.
“It’s even more unusual that the individual isn’t a royal or a wealthy landowner - in fact records suggest that before he was brutally murdered, Joe was a recipient of poor relief.
“It gives us a poignant and tangible link to the day-to-day life of an ordinary working person in the early 19th century.”
The museum plans to recreate Joe’s cottage in its Georgian area as part of Remaking Beamish developments. The expansion of the area will also include a coaching inn where visitors can stay the night.
There are also plans to build a 1950s Town featuring a cinema, houses, a cafe and aged miners’ homes which will provide a centre for people living with dementia, their families and carers.
Beamish has received initial support from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for a £10.75million grant for the project.
