King Eddy Stories – Calgary’s original ‘Home of the Blues'
For over 100 years, the King Edward Hotel—located on the corner of 4 Street and 9 Avenue SE in the East Village—has been a cornerstone of Calgary’s culture and community with musical legends, such as John Hammond, Buddy Guy, Pinetop Perkins and Otis Rush, gracing its tiny stage.
Since breaking ground on Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre (NMC), in 2013, we have carefully reassembled the historic King Eddy, honouring the original plans and returning it to its 1905 glory.
NMC wants music fans to be a part of the history of this East Village cornerstone, and give it another century of music, community and great memories.
Buy an original King Eddy brick and engrave it with your very own personalized message. Your brick will be featured on the Cornerstones Wall inside the restored King Eddy.

National Music Centre Tour

Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre - CISC 2017
Studio Bell is located in Calgary’s East Village. The design includes the integration of the oldest hotel in Calgary and Canada’s oldest blues bar, the King Edward. Studio Bell is dedicated to Canadian music. It integrates the National Music Centre Collection, the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame, education and public programming, artist in residence programs, a performance hall, recording studio and broadcast centre.
The project presented a number of exciting structural challenges including the re-purposing, historic preservation, and integration of the original King Edward Hotel. The highly expressive architectural form resulted in a large number of inclined columns that made the new east and west blocks want to lean towards each other. We resolved this by utilizing the +60 bridge connection. The bridge spans over both 4th Street and the King Edward Hotel, acting as a structural brace between the two buildings. We’ve also designed and detailed the free form cantilevered feature stairs, conducting dynamic analysis to ensure public comfort.
