ampong Thom is Cambodia's second largest province by area. Its capital is named Kampong Thom, a picturesque town on the banks of the Stung Saen River. The Sambor temple and Prei Kuk temple are the two main temples in Kompong Thom as well as other less significant Angkorian sites. Kompong Thom was a very powerful capital in Southeast Asia during the Funan period. Later on, during the French rule, the province was home to a large group named the Stieng, but they have long been assimilated into Khmer society.Kampong Pos Thom was the original name of the present called Kampong Thom. Because originally long time ago, at the dock of the Sen River next to a big natural lake, there was a big cave with a pair of big snakes inside. The people living around this area usually saw these big snakes every Buddhist Holiday.

Chinit River (alternates: Stung Chinit or Stoeng Chinith) is a river of Cambodia. Located in Kampong Thom Province,it is a major tributary of the Tonlé Sap Lake (Great Lake), which joins the Tonlé Sap River at the downstream end in the larger Mekong basin. Somewhat unusually the river is looped back into the same river system, which accounts for its length of 264 kilometers (164 mi), leaving Tonlé Sap lake and entering its river again downstream. The prehistoric archaeological site of Samrong Sen is located on the river bank.Water resource projects, commencing in 1971 and in 2003, have had various measures of success. The river is an important trade route.

On The Way to Siem Reap | Lunch at Krong Steung Sen in Kampong Thom
We just left Kok Roka temple at west of Krong Steun Sen in Kampong Thom Province. We're heading to Krong Steung Sen for lunch. This town now has an independent monument roundabout like most of the provinces. We went around this roundabout to a small restaurant behind Kampong Thom market called Prum Bayon restaurant. We ordered chicken soup, fried proma fish & duck egg, green vegetables salad, fish sour soup (Samlor Machoo Yuon), Samlor Kakor to eat with steamed white rice. After lunch, we continued our trip to Siem Reap province. This video ended at Kampong Kdei market.

Kampong Thom (Khmer: កំពង់ធំ, IPA: [kɑmpɔːŋ tʰom] Grand Port) is a province (khaet) of Cambodia. It borders the provinces of Siem Reap to the northwest, Preah Vihear to the north, Stung Treng to the northeast, Kratie to the east, Kampong Cham, Kampong Chhnang to the south, and the Tonle Sap to the west.
The provincial capital is Kampong Thom City, a town of approximately 30,000 people on the banks of the Stung Sen River.
Kampong Thom is Cambodia's second largest province by area. There are a number of significant Angkorian sites in the area, including Prasat Sambor Prei Kuk and Prasat Andet temples. As one of the nine provinces bordering Tonle Sap Lake, Kampong Thom is part of the Tonlé Sap Biosphere Reserve.[2]
The previous name of the province was Kampong Pous Thom (Port/City of the Great Snakes). According to local legend, at a lakeside dock near the Sen River, a pair of large snakes inhabited a nearby cave. On every Buddhist holiday, the snakes would make appearances to the people nearby who then began to refer to the area as Kampong Pous Thom. Eventually the snakes disappeared and the name was shortened to Kampong Thom. During the Colonial Cambodia period, the French divided Cambodian territory into provinces and named most of them according to the local popular names for the respective areas.
History
Kampong Thom was a powerful capital in Southeast Asia during the Funan period.[citation needed] Prasat Sambor Prei Kuk, dating from the Chenla Era, is in Kampong Thom Province.[3]
Economy
The province is one of the largest producer of cashews in the country.
Kampong Thom Province is rich in tourism potential, attracting tourists with its exotic lakes, rivers, forests, mountains and more than 200 ancient temples.
Much of Kampong Thom is located on the floodplain of the Tonlé Sap lake. In 2003–04, it was a significant producer of wild fish (18,800 tons) and the fourth largest producer of fish through aquaculture in Cambodia (1,800 tons). Most of the fish-raising is done by home production, with a growing segment devoted to rice field aquaculture.[5]
Kampong Thom is also one of the largest producers of cashew nuts in Cambodia, with 6,371 hectares under production in 2003–04.[6]

Highway 6 in Kampong Thom, Cambodia
Morning traffic in Kampong Thom. I was just leaving on a 95 mile ride to Siem Reap. The highway 6 was under construction almost all the way so no shoulder with a 3 to 4 foot drop off in many areas. Traffic was heavy but I never felt in danger, or at least let myself feel in danger.
