Provincial Cities of Australia: Ballarat (1931)
This silent documentary from Efftee Film Productions about Ballarat was produced in 1931.
It opens with with the Victory Arch spanning the Avenue of Honour, a memorial to men who fought in the First World War. We see Sturt Street and trams, the statue of Eureka Rebellion leader Peter Lalor and the obelisk commemorating the Eureka Stockade. It was shot at the start of the Great Depression and includes images of desperate unemployed men scratching for gold in Ballarat’s gutters and creeks around the town.
We also see the elaborate stucco exterior of the 'Old Curiosity Shop’, created by James and Caroline Harwick in the late 1800s, the Ballarat Botanic Gardens and the statue 'Flight from Pompeii' by the sculptor Benzoni. At nearby Lake Wendouree people are shown sailing and rowing, riding on tourist boats, fishing and enjoying the foreshores of the lake.

Ballarat Travel Guide - Australia Charming Experience
Ballarat Travel Guide - Australia Charming Experience
Ballarat is one of the greatest gold-mining towns on earth, and the mineral continues to provide most of the town's major attractions, even long after the end of the gold rush. It’s easy to see the proceeds of that boom time in the monumental Victorian-era buildings around the city centre. In terms of population Ballarat is the third largest inland city in Australia. Just months after Victoria was granted separation from the state of New South Wales, the Victorian gold rush transformed Ballarat from a small sheep station to a major settlement. Gold was discovered on 18 August 1851, and news quickly spread of rich alluvial fields where gold could easily be extracted. Unlike many other gold boom towns, the Ballarat fields experienced sustained high gold yields for many decades, which can be evidenced to this day in the city's rich architecture.
The city is famous for the 1854 tax-revolt known as the Eureka Rebellion. In response to this event the first male suffrage in Australia was instituted and as such Eureka is interpreted by some as the origin of democracy in Australia. The rebellion's symbol, the Eureka Flag, has become a national symbol and is held at the Museum of Australian Democracy at Eureka in Ballarat.
Ballarat lies at the foothills of the Great Dividing Range in Central Western Victoria. Also known as the Central Highlands, it is named so because of its gentle hills and lack of any significant mountains that are more common in the eastern sections of the Great Dividing Range. The city lies within a mostly gently undulating section of the midland plains which stretch from Creswick in the north, to Rokewood in the south, and from Lal Lal in the south-east to Pittong in the west.
A significant heritage tourism industry has not grown substantially in Ballarat since the 1960s. Ballarat is most notable for the award-winning open-air museum known as Sovereign Hill, a recreated 1850s gold mining settlement opened in 1970. Sovereign Hill is Ballarat's biggest tourism drawcard and is consistently rated among one of the best outdoor museums in the world and continues to expand. Sovereign Hill accounts for over half a million of Ballarat's visitors and $40 million in tourism revenue.
Several businesses and attractions have capitalised on Ballarat's gold mining history. They include Kryal Castle (1972), Gold Rush Mini Golf (2002) featuring the Big Miner (2006) one of Australia's big things (although the original proposal appeared larger and for the miner to hold the Eureka Flag) at Ballarat's eastern entrance.
Other tourist attractions include the Eureka Centre; The Gold Museum, Ballarat; Ballarat Botanic gardens and Lake Wendouree; the Museum of Australian Democracy; the Ballarat Tramway Museum and Ballarat Ghost Tours and Ballarat Wildlife Park. A large number of Ballarat hotels, motels and restaurants service the tourism industry. The Ballarat Tourist Association is an industry based non-profit, membership organisation representing the city's tourism industry. Ballarat honours its rich history by hosting a number of annual festivals with historical and cultural focus including the Ballarat Begonia Festival, Ballarat Heritage Weekend and Ballarat Beat Rockabilly Festival.

If you plan on taking a holiday to Victoria Australia, one of the most popular tourist spots to visit outside of Melbourne is Ballarat. It does get a bit cooler than Melbourne, so take some warm clothes! One of the biggest festivals in Ballarat is their Winter Festival. Here they decorate laneways with colourful lights and have a pop up ice skating ring just off Sturt Street. One of the biggest events though is the Winter Wonderlights at Sovereign Hill. I’ll show more of this in the video guide to Ballarat.
In this video I will show you some of the best things to do in Ballarat for a family, couple or even solo traveller.
This is a list of Ballarat’s top tourist attractions

The park was opened in 1987 and covers some 37 acres of natural bushland. Learn about koalas on one of the guided tours. Get a selfie with a wombat. Watch Tasmanian devils getting fed. See giant tortoises, crocodiles and alligators. And of course the meerkats! Check out the reptile enclose for snakes and lizards. A great place to take the whole family in Ballarat.

2. Kryal Castle.
One of the more popular things to do in Ballarat, especially for the family is Kryal Castle. Built as medieval castle just outside of town. Fun things to see the knights at the Tournament Arena. Here they joust on horseback and even sword fight. Watch the wizard make potions in his workshop. Visit the Torture Museum or get lost in the castle’s maze. There are places to eat and you can even stay overnight at one of their rooms. I will do another video on accommodation at Kryal Castle. Prices are listed on the website.
1/ Sovereign Hill
Without a doubt the number one tourist attraction in Ballarat is Sovereign Hill. It has been voted Australia’s best ‘Major Tourist Attraction’ multiple times. A theme park set back as an 1850’s gold mining town. Learn to pan for gold in a replica river. Go underground on some the gold mining tours. Watch people preforming chores dressed in period costumes. See how they make candy the old way. Some other popular attractions at Sovereign Hill include the Red Coat Soldiers musket firing, horse and coach rides, bowling, candle making, getting and old photo taken and other street activities. A great place to take the whole family - a great educational experience for kids to learn about history.
During Winter Sovereign Hill has its Winter Wonderlights Festival. This is a specular light show – that for me is a must do in Ballarat. The lights and snow effects make this truly a wonderful show to experience. During the festival they decorate Main Street shops with Christmas decorates, have a band playing Christmas Carols and you might even see Santa. One of the best Christmas in July events in Australia! A must for the family!
