Steep Hill Railways in Stuttgart Germany (1990s S-VHS video)
Two steep hill metre gauge urban rail services in the German city of Stuttgart.
One is a funicular, the other is a rack & pinion (cog wheel) tramway which also has a flat bed trailer designed to carry up to 10 bicycles when travelling uphill from the lower terminus to the upper terminus.
The Stuttgart Cable car (Standseilbahn Stuttgart in German) opened in 1929, is 536 metres in length and has a maximum include of 28.3%. It still uses its original rolling stock.
Stuttgart's rack railway (Zahnradbahn in German) first commenced services in 1884. Several times extended in length, nowadays this urban tramway is 2.2km (about 1 1/3rd mile) in length. The steepest incline on the passenger section is 17.5%, however the route to the depot includes a section of track where the incline is 20%. The Zahnradbahn uses three trams of the type ZT 4 which date from 1982 and are styled to look similar to Stuttgart's original DT8 light rail vehicles as used in many parts of the city. Because the ZT 4 trams are not accessible to passengers who cannot climb steps their replacement is being planned.
Also shown are some unusual traffic signals at one of the locations where the Zahnradbahn crosses quiet urban streets. These signals can best be described as looking and functioning like traffic signals that omit the green lamp. Although they signify a railway crossing with the usual St Andrews Cross they only show solid yellow and red lamps - no green! The coloured lamp signals are followed by the road traffic. The trams follow dedicated white light signals which show vertical and horizontal bars, flashing discs and more.
Video footage filmed in December 1990 and summers in 1992 and 1997. S-VHS video (not HD) and still images from the 1990's plus 2008 and 2010.

Beautiful Stuttgart...by funicular railway to the Waldfriedhof,November,9th,2012
This small movie shows a trip to the Waldfriedhof (cemetery) by the famous funicular railway in my hometown Stuttgart. The wagons of this funicular railway were built in 1929.
At the Waldfriedhof are a lot of gravesites of famous people. My friend, the former FIFA-Referee Rudolf Kreitlein and his wife Anneliese Kreitlein have their gravesite there as well.
