South Korea: Gyeongju - King Munmu's Tomb
I visit the charming and ancient city of Gyeongju, once the capital of the ancient Silla kingdom in South Korea. Here we are at what looks like a typical beach but in the background is a rocky islet - the underwater tomb of King Munmu. He was king back in 661 A.D. and had unified the three kingdoms of Korea. Before his death he gave specific instructions to be buried in a floating tomb so he could return as a dragon and protect his people and country...

There is a marker on the waters, the little islets in the distance, are representative of King Munmu's Underwater Tomb. Located in Gyeongju, South Korea. Check out more videos at:

Underwater Tomb of King Munmu - 경주 문무대왕릉
This site is located on Korea's coastline bordering the East Sea. I was lucky enough to catch this within minutes of sunset. Catching a taxi here is not advised as its quite far from downtown Gyeongju. Your best bet would be catching the bus if your Korean is basic enough or going on Gyeongju's City Tour.
If your Korean is half decent, I highly advise you take the bus to every place of interest in Gyeongju. The city itself is well spread out however the famous places are often close to each other.

Daeneungwon Royal Tombs and Observatory Cheomseongdae
Large ancient tombs of kings and noblemen of the Silla Kingdom can be seen around Gyeongju at the Daereungwon Tomb Complex (Cheonmachong Tomb). There are twenty-three large tombs located here; the most famous being Cheonmachong and Hwangnamdaechong. In an excavation of the area in the 1970's, Cheonmachong was discovered with a painting of mounted horse. This painting is the only discovered painting from the Silla Era
Cheomseongdae is the oldest existing astronomical observatory in Asia.
Constructed during the reign of Queen Seon-deok (632-647), it was used for observing the stars in order to forecast the weather. This stone structure is a beautiful combination of straight lines and curves, and was designated as National Treasure No.31 on December 20th, 1962.

Silla (Sir'ɔ), the Forgotten Gold Civilization III
Restoration of the Ruins/폐허의 복원 - Gyeongju Now and Then (9)
The Mausoleum of Munmu the Great and His Temple (대왕암공원과 감은사지)
In 676 Munmu the Great and his Shinra countrymen (also spelled Silla/Sir'ɔ) won the 7 years of dreadful war with the world empire Tang.
Facing his death the king in his will told his people to cremate him in the water.
The Sun seems to rise from his underwater mausoleum in the east coast, travels through a straight line over the tombs of his kinsmen and women and the monuments they built, and sets right behind the mausoleum of Martial King KiM Yushin, Munmu King's uncle.
The king wanted to watch over and protect the country together with his family and the Sun from whose golden color the family found their family name.
His son Shinmun King built a new temple complex near the beach where his mausoleum was in order to commemorate his great achievement and named the temple Gameunsa, literally meaning the Temple of Gratefulness.
After all, the prosperity of the mysterious golden kingdom was thanks to the unification that put an end to the many centuries of the age of warring empires.
Munmu the Great KiM Bobmin is now remembered as the great king who completed the unification of the Korean Peninsula.

Worshiping the sea tomb of Great King Munmu
A ceremony worshiping the underwater tomb of Great King Munmu, 13th king of the Shilla dynasty who ruled from AD 661-681 and was considered the first king of unified Shilla. His tomb lies under a rocky islet about 200m offshore from this beach on the east coast of Korea in Gyeongju National Park. People are here every day, year round, paying tribute to the king in such ceremonies from tents like this that line the shore. Between the tent and the shore appears to be an offering of a bottle of rice wine and some assorted fruit.

Royal Tombs / KBS뉴스(News)
[Anchor Lead]
In 2013, royal tombs of the Goryeo Kingdom in the city of Kaesong in North Korea were inscribed as World Heritage. However, Goryeo tombs on Ganghwado Island were excluded. Many historians are calling for the inscription of Gangwha royal tombs as well.
[Pkg]
After a ten-minute ascent up this mountain, the tomb of Goryeo King Gojong comes into view. The burial mound measures about five to six meters, and it only has four stone figures placed in front of it. The tomb of Goryeo King Heejong, which is surrounded by a stone fence, is also unusually simple for a royal tomb.
[Soundbite] Chung Hak-soo(Research Center for Incheon History and Culture) : Royal tombs that were set up on Ganghwa when it became the capital of Goryeo Kingdom are not large, because Ganghwa served as a wartime capital.
Ganghwado Island, which used to be the capital of the Goryeo Kingdom for 39 years to protect the country from Mongolian invasions, is confirmed to have four royal tombs. Many historians are calling for including the Ganghwa royal tombs with the Goryeo royal tombs in the North Korean city of Kaesong, which were added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2013.
[Soundbite] Prof. Chung Kyung-il(Yanbian University, China) : Adding more relics to the World Heritage list is an important task of inter-Korean cultural heritage cooperation.
The government of Incheon City plans to officially request that the Cultural Heritage Administration inscribe the Ganghwa royal tombs with UNESCO World Heritage designation this year as part of inter-Korean cooperation. It remains to be seen if more royal tombs from the Goryeo and Joseon periods will be added to the World Cultural Heritage list.

Lunar Palace, One of the Main Royal Palaces of the Silla Monarchs
The Lunar Palace, or Wolsung, literally meaning the Royal Palace of the Moon, was one of the main royal residences and royal courts where the national policies were discussed and made.
The palace complex was surrounded by tall earthen walls and moats for protection.
Gyeongju, which was called Solapol, Sola, Sirɔ, Siraber[g] or Seobur[g] under Silla Kings or Queens, was the capital city of the millennium kingdom for a thousand years; Silla never moved its capital in all that years, and it is truly a unique case in our Human history.
Series of excavations have been going on in the site, yet as of now in Spring 2017 nothing has been restored, but only the computer 3D images by Gyeongju City Hall and Korea Broadcasting System (KBS) based on what they have found out so far.
You can go visit the Gyeongju National Museum, the second biggest national museum in the country, right next to the Wolsung excavation site, and meet all the delightful ancient gold-crafts in its Archaeology Hall.
