Saundaryalahari - Complete 100 Slokas - by Ätmaprajnänanda Saraswati
Introduction
Sakti-worship has been in existence in India since ancient times. It is traced to Vedic texts, Upanishads (Umä Haimävati in Kenopanishad and Svetäsvatara Upanishad) the Mahäbhärata (Durgä in Virät-parva, and Bhishma-parva) and most of the Puränas. It was in practice during Indus-Saraswati Valley civilization, which is dated around 2500 BCE even conservatively by the Indologists. (Two images of female forms of worship during this period are included in this video-presentation). Currently (means at least since 1,500 years) Sakti is worshipped as Umä in the Himälayas, as Ambä in Kashmir, as Visäläkshi in Varanasi, as Bhaväni in Maharashtra, as Durgä and Käli in Bengal, as Minäkshi in Madurai, and as Kämäkshi in Känchipuram -- to mention only a few famous places of Sakti. Every city, town, and village in India has its own Grämadevi.
'Saundaryalahari' one of the most beautiful devotional hymns in Sanskrit literature is a hymn of intense devotion, despite Tantric concepts contained in it. It is a poetical, devotional, and spiritual genius, a masterpiece. As the name suggests, it is the 'Wave of Divine Beauty', engulfing the reader in the ocean of love, admiration, devotion for the Devi. Beautiful in language and style, beautiful in topic and tone, it is mellifluous and melodious.
Author of Saundaryalahari
'Saundaryalahari', has at least thirty-six commentaries on it, and is widely read and chanted by many devotees in India. There are several introductions to the text, giving conflicting views about the author and his time. Most of the works however seem to agree that this work was composed by one Sage Pushpadanta and Ädi Sankaräcärya. The work is divided into two parts -- the first part comprising 41 verses is called 'Änandalahari', and the second part comprising 59 verses is called 'Saundaryalahari'. According to some, it is the second half, titled 'Saundaryalahari' that was composed by Ädi Sankara. Since there seems to be no critical edition of the text, collating manuscripts, the accounts are all based on myths and legends.

P.S. -- 'Saundaryalahari' irresistibly fascinates whosoever resorts to it. This can be proved by the fact that when I started my spiritual journey in 1996 (in this life), I was overawed with this voluminous Mahäkävya (100 slokas of 4 lines each). There was no individual or chorus-chanting or teaching of 'Saundaryalahari' in our Gurukulam. The only recording available was chanted by the most knowledgeable and scholar Äcärya-Swämi of our Gurukulm. When I heard it, I let it go, saying -- 'Next Life'. After graduating through all the Stotras, Vishnusahasranäma, Lalitäsahasranäma, 18 chapters of Bhagavad-Gitä and few Vedic Chants, and 8 years of rigourous study of Paninian grammar, I dared to chant it few times, and dared to have it recorded in 2008. I have chanted in traditional chanting style (and not musical), so that anybody with the text will be able to learn it and chant without a live teacher.
May Devi, the universal Mother, manifestation of the Vaishnavi shakti of Isvara, who shines through every description of this hymn, illumine the mind of all the listeners, and fill their heart with love and contentment. That in 2011, devotional chants in Youtube is being visited, is a Wonder, and proves the fact that Dharma is still alive.
